Poll What is the WORST Zelda game? (85 votes)

A Link to the Past 6%
Link's Awakening 1%
Ocarina of Time 4%
Majora's Mask 5%
Oracle of Ages 2%
Oracle of Seasons 1%
The Wind Waker 13%
The Minish Cap 1%
Twilight Princess 8%
Phantom Hourglass 11%
Spirit Tracks 19%
Skyward Sword 25%
A Link Between Worlds 2%

We've had the 'best Zelda game ever' threads and polls so many times, I figured it would make for a nice change to flip everything (just like the game world was flipped in the Wii version of Twilight Princess to accommodate right handed players for the motion controls).

So, this discussion is not about the best Zelda game. We know which games most often top those (A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker). This discussion is about the worst Zelda game. Which one is it? And why?

My opinion follows in spoilers.

It is not Skyward Sword. While Skyward Sword may be the most disappointing game, it was still a fundamentally good game, with some poor design choices. Plus, it has some amazing character work and music, not to mention a great story, to elevate it.

My answer instead is Spirit Tracks. It lacks the novelty and freshness that made Phantom Hourglass so great, and it has absolutely nothing going for it, except the music. Segmented overworld curbing exploration, poor dungeons, poor combat, and a story that completely throws away the potential of the Wind Waker timeline... **** Spirit Tracks.

Anyway, that's me. What about you?

Incidentally: yes, I know I excluded the first two NES games from the poll. Again, this was done on purpose. Those games are so old, including them would be unfair and might skew voting, thereby suppressing the actual discussion around this topic that I hope to generate.

I voted A Link to the Past just to be a complete asshole. This is my revenge for you not allowing me to vote for Zelda II. Aside from that, of the ones I've played... probably Skyward Sword, I dunno.

Either of the DS titles for me.

PH hourglass was just so bland and forgettable in many ways to me (music, sailing/overworld, dungeons namely), the ocean temple place was annoying. I had more fun doing the online multiplayer in PH than I did the single player. Spirits tracks had a bit more charm to it, but traveling on the train got tiresome very quickly, and the one hit kill bomb cars could be frustrating. the dungeons still weren't anything amazing. Trying to play the flute I remember was a pain in the ass. Spirit Tracks didn't even have an online mode that I could play to escaoe from the mediocre single player.

Wind waker as far as the 3d games go, from what i've played. Worst is probably one of the ds games though.

A Link to the Past is apparently the best andthe worst Zelda game, all at once.

Only on System Wars.

Skyward Sword is a double stuffed shit barrel dedicated to wasting the players time instead of actually being fun, entertaining, engaging, or actually well designed. Game sucks.

I'd also put Twilight Princess with its barren overworld, useless items outside of dungeons, little to no sidequests, stunted pacing and laughably easy boss fights.

For me it's easily Wind Waker. People complain about Skyward Sword's padding but WW is flat out unfinished with a bunch of boring time wasters to fill time, and the dungeons were awful. Sail here, do nothing. Now sail here, jump some platforms. Now sail here, bomb a wall, get a pearl. Now sail here, place pearl. Now sail here, DUNGEON TIME! Probably the worst stretch of game I've ever played, period.

You made me do it bro, by withholding the one true answer to this thread.

Skyward Sword, only part of it I liked was the sword combat. First game to actually use motion controls kind of effectively.

You need to be chillin with us on the of forum, that way we can play video games together : >

Also yeah pussy ass zelda boss fights. Nintendo needs to spend their Zelda money on Metroid. Financially a shitty design, but the integrity of going with the vastly superior franchise is priceless.

From what I've played, Skyward Sword. Haven't played the DS ones. Interesting that many are being honest about the game now as at the time of release they refused to be.

I would have chosen the CD-i games but since they weren't an option I choose Spirit Tracks. I just really didn't enjoy either DS Zelda games and I thought ST was the worst of the two.

Haven't played many of the handheld games.

Skyward sword for me. Just felt far too linear. There didn't seem to be an actual game world. As using the sky to go to ground level sort of made the game feel like nothing connected. The sky felt very bland and most of the little islands were pointless. Worse so than wind wakers at sea. Although the dungeons were quiet fun which made up for alot of other bad things.

Wind waker had the Zelda freedom feeling just like the rest. I never got it in skyward sword. But i think Nintendo is going in the right direction with the new Wii u one.

EASILY Spirit Tracks. It is the only Zelda game that strips the illusion of 'adventure' from the series.

Either DS Zelda game was a big ol' meh for me. Sure, it was neat that the entire game was controlled via touch screen rather than with a D-Pad; it worked pretty well. But my god was I over it after an hour or two. Plus, just the design of those games from the overworld to the dungeons was incredibly mediocre.

The DS games were complete abominations. Spirit Tracks is slightly less horrible because it's got a nice soundtrack.

EDIT: Also, Smash 3DS' coolest stage is based on Spirit Tracks. I guess that sort of justifies its existence. Phantom Hourglass has absolutely nothing going for it.

I am of the opposite opinion of this man. In terms of just pure fun and enjoyment, Skyward Sword might be the very best installment. The only drawbacks were the lack of full exploration and Fi who I ignored. Otherwise it was pure game. It was an onslaught of interesting new and varied ideas thrown at you at rapid speed. Nothing felt tacked on or unnecessary. Every bit of gameplay was completely merited.

On topic. It's has to be Phantom Hourglass. It's not horrible, but it's several steps below the Zelda norm. It was about 1/3rd the size of any other hand held Zelda with almost no exploration at all. The dungeons were clever but were 5 minute affairs. It felt kind of like a mobile version of the franchise.

I've only played the console Zelda games, and of those, Wind Waker and Skyward Sword definitely stand out as the worst and exemplify the kind of Zelda that I don't like (cartoonish, too much of a light-hearted atmosphere, and boring tedious padding). I'm going to vote for Wind Waker since it was the bigger disappointment coming off of the amazing N64 games.

While Skyward Sword was still fundamentaly a good game, it felt more like a Wii motion plus tech demo than a true Zelda game.

I only liked the sword gameplay. All the other motion gimmicks felt seriously forced and ruined the experience for me. Perhaps there were other good uses for the motion controls in certain items, but I never got very far into the game.

The NES games are the worst, with Zelda 2 being the clear hands-down winner. Of the options in the poll, I'd go with Twilight Princess.

@foxhound_fox: They aren't proper Zelda games and they would render this discussion completely pointless. I can understand why he left them out. You don't ask what the best 2D Mario is and leave in Hotel Mario. Because it's that. Thread closed.

Wind Waker literally put me to sleep, but OoT and MM were the first times I noticed hand holding and how they were making those games for kids more than just everyone.

So I pick MM...even though OoT is just as bad.

Skyward Sword was average, at best.

However, the DS games take the cake with the absolute disgusting control scheme. For lack of originally, Spirit Tracks takes it even further than it's predecessor.

So ST it is
