The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt 58%
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 42%

Two massive, open world games, both the most critically acclaimed titles of this generation, both considered to be the masters of their craft. Both are beloved, both had rapturous reception, and both have 'wild' in their name.

Which one is better, and why?

Breath of the Wild, while I think it has a lot of the Witcher's same gameplay flaws: Combat is devoid of depth, it rarely uses enemies in interesting ways, lots of filler, and all that jazz. There is more depth to some of its ideas overall. The exploration is 2nd to none, and judging by how some of the better shrines work in that game it's an absolute delight to speed run I bet, which I plan on trying. The sheer level of freedom is liberating in that game, and it creates far more dynamic and emergent sequences of gameplay that isn't there in a game like The Witcher 3.

The Witcher 3 is more directed, it certainly has a more engaging narrative n characters, but it would have all of Zelda's short comings from a gameplay standpoint, but no where in the same ball park with the positives. And I don't know, call me ol fashioned, but I judge a game more on what it does from interactions standpoint (IE the fucking gameplay) than I do the other shit.

I loved TW3. Haven't played the new Zelda, although love the series. So I cannot form a true opinion.

Can't compare both at the same level as I don't consider BOTW as an rpg. As for what I consider better is Witcher 3 simply because the world was more immersive and it's characters were more interesting than that of BOTW. The things however that I liked more in BOTW were the sandbox style gameplay and the real freedom of traversal.Physics were great too.

So I guess overall gameplay felt better in BOTW but everything else felt better in Witcher 3. From immersion to story to music Witcher 3 felt far more superior to me.

Own 'em both. #3 is my first Witcher, so I wasn't versed in the lore, nor did what I experience really pull me in at all. I think combat in BotW is light-years beyond tW3, which to me I never liked "the feel of" at all. I do think tW3 is well above average, but not even in the same league of BotW. It is my opinion that the art style of BotW might not appeal to the dude-bro's, and the R rated bits of tW3 will really sell it to a certain demographic so it'll grab those votes. But I don't beleive tW3 deserves as much praise as it gets, while over 155 hours in, 120 shrines down and BotW is still exceeding all of my expectations.

Zelda has deviated too much from the original formula for me, and cannot play it with that shit durability crap.

game of the year 2016 vs 2017

I haven't played Breath of Wild (because buying a console to play one game a year doesn't make sense to me), but Witcher 3 is a masterstroke. Best open-world game since GTA V and Red Dead Redemption.

Let's not forget The Witcher 3 premier trailer:

Wow. I'm amazed that anyone would vote for breath of the boring with it's empty world, small cities, and simplistic dungeons over the Witcher 3 with it's content filled world, fantastic visuals, excellent combat, and much better story. I get that most Zelda votes are going to be from fanboys, but come on. The Witcher 3 is so much better on every level that it's no contest.

Breath of the Wild by far.

The Witcher 3 has terrible combat and terrible movement controls that made the game unplayable to me. It is the biggest disappointment of this generation to me and I think that too many people look past and make excuses for it's terrible combat and movement controls to give it excellent reviews when having good combat and especially movement controls are critical components that should not be looked past and excused just because other aspects of the game may be great.

Resident Evil 4 rings a bell to you ?

I've played and finished, both games. My point is that unless your issue is the degree of durability in Zelda (which I guess is a fair argument), having durability as a reason to not like it, but to like Witcher 3, is dumb. That was what I was getting at.

I'm not even touching the 'they deviated from the formula too much' comment.

I understand how well done the Witcher 3 was... I played it and enjoyed it but Zelda takes a massive dump all over it as a video game.

I always expect a Zelda game to have amazing gameplay that other developers try to copy for years to come, until the NEXT Zelda game releases. Witcher 3 I hear is more of a cinematic experience, which serves it's purpose, but contributes nothing to actual gameplay.

I really, really enjoyed both games but I enjoyed BOTW more. Despite the less realistic graphics the world just seems more alive and immersive for some reason. I am playing through the game again right now.

@sHaDyCuBe321: pure gameplay then yes, BoTW is better but The Witcher 3 gameplay is good and also has a great story behind it. The Witcher 3 does everything else better than Zelda from open world to side quests to the characters.

@Flubbbs: I'd argue that Breath of the Wild does open world better than The Witcher 3. This is one of the reasons why I voted with Breath of the Wild.

For me, the strongest aspects of The Witcher 3 are the visuals and characters. I really like the characters in the game.

@storm_of_swords: I didn't have that much of a problem with the combat. Nor the best, but enjoyable. The movement is awful though. But for you to say the game is awful cause of movement and combat, and disregard the amazing aspects of it (which outshine the bad parts considerably) shows you probably just sucked, or had a bad view of the game even before you played it.

Horse mechanics were better in TW3 IMO, used Roach way more in TW3. In Zelda I just ran and climbed, the horse got stuck way too easily (small ledges, rocks etc.)

Movement is a very important component of a game. I can forgive some flaws in other areas, but having awful movement is not something that I can look past. If something as basic and critical as simply moving around in the game is an awful experience then it doesn't matter how amazing other aspects of the game are because without good movement then the game is unplayable to me. And I definitely don't think that it deserves perfect 10/10 scores when even people that love the game can't deny that the movement is terrible. How some people think that something as important to a game as basic movement can just be looked past and forgiven just because they like other aspects of the game bewilders me.

It's just illogical to compare these two games as they don't belong to the same genre. A better comparison would be Final Fantasy XV and Witcher 3. As for Zelda games, they're mostly in their own genre. This thread is like comparing Call of Duty/Battlefield to DOOM.

They're both first person shooters but play very differently just like both Zelda and Witcher have third person perspective and sword fighting but the focus is totally different. Saying DOOM plays better than Battlefield is nonsense because they play very differently. You don't have reload and move so fast in DOOM. So having an opinion in this thread doesn't make much sense because BotW and W3 are vastly different. Might as well compare Uncharted to Tetris.
