yooo, Sony decimating the competition from left to right. Awards, sales, games... Oh dear.
you know whats funny? 99 GOTY awards for TLOU, sold 3.5 million none for CoD, sells 10 million. Funny how certain things only matter when they benefit the posters opinion.
Also FWIW i think an 8.0 is a fair score. it was a good game IMO but not an amazing one. Same way that avatar was a good movie, but not a great one but was so popular due to visuals. If naughty dog would have improved the actual gameplay it should have been GOTY.
CoD is sold over 4 different systems while TLOU is confined to one.
halo 4 sold 10 million and is confined to 1 platform as well. No reason an amazing exclusive can't sell close to 10 million. especially if its a top 5 game all time like people say
You made the mistake that I've seen many times over the great years of comparing sales to an hugely marketed and very popular long running high quality series to a brand new high quality game IP released this year. One game series is well known to gamers, the other is just starting out it's "sales journey". On a smaller note, comparing a 2011 life time sales to a 2013 life time sales is also a faux pas, but let's focus on the exposure of new IPs issue. These types of misunderstood comments/posts in forums is also why I don't play sales, but I have some general information you may feel free to absorb if you see fit. Remember too, SALES =/= QUALITY, but that's a general rule of thumb for everyone.
In the RL, new IPs struggle in comparison to huge legacy franchises. That's why publishers make so many sequels, especially at the end of a generation. Uncharted 4 would have been a much safer choice for Naughty Dog and probably would have seen more sales than The Last of Us. Sony and Naughty Dog took a chance crafting a new IP and releasing it on PS3 with The Last of Us, instead of seeing another Naughty Dog Uncharted. We are speaking of the end of a generation, seeing High QUALITY AAA budgeted retail new IPs at the tail end of a gaming generation isn't something we see often.
We usually see the new IPs show up at the beginning of a generation and then those IPs are milked all gen (AC, COD, etc). The publishers already HEAVILY invested on the brand, and the current generation engine is ready to go, which is why this happens. The fact a quality new IP can release and be successful/find a place in the market so late in a gen is a win for any new IP on any platform. It's definitely a win for gamers.
I love new high quality IPs, I loved GeoW when that hit at the beginning of the 360 gen for example...I just dig fresh new HIGH QUALITY experiences on any platform if I'm lucky enough to get my hands on them.
