I doubt Sony will actually take another shot at the handhelds, not anytime soon, I think people forget company's like this stockpile patents they never plan on using.
@charizard1605: Think about it. A Switch-like hybrid based on 2020 APU technology would be more than suitable to push 4k graphics as well as mobilize psvr.
Nintendo is on to a whole new design paradigm with the Switch and it would be silly to think that it won't have longterm repurcussions for design in future consoles.

I'm sure the Switch will switch (heh) things up a lot. I am positive about it. But I also don't think Sony is ready to jump back into the handheld market just yet. For all practical and functional purposes, it already has to support two platforms between the PS4 and PSVR. Maybe this is what Sony is aiming for in 2020 or 2021 as you said, and maybe it's their new major system (a PS5, so to say)- but for now, I think Aigis is right, they are just hedging their bets.
@charizard1605: For the record, this is to a "T" what was described to me as 'Trinity'.
Yeah, I heard about Trinity too, but the rumblings said it was just like a PS Vita 'Pro', not a full fledged new riff on the Switch concept.
I wonder if Switch catches on,will Microsoft attempt something like it? An Xbox Surface tablet, maybe?
Eh, no thanks. I bought both the PSP and the Vita, and while I liked both systems from a technical standpoint, they just didn't receive the support needed to be worth the money, and I don't see Sony doing any different here.
If they make a new handheld they have to support it properly.
@ProtossRushX: "Vita 2"
PSP2
No, the Vita was the PSP2. This would be the PSP3.
And after how badly Sony has treated its last two handhelds, its laughable that it thinks it gets another crack at the market.
Ugh please no. While I love the Vita and PSP i feel like Sony really can't spread themselves too thin again.
@charizard1605: what did they do wrong with the psp? It had good sales and a good library
The PSP was amazing and I love it (and I also adore my Vita), but those systems were good in spite of Sony, not because of them.
well, nintendo couldnt support both the wiiu and 3DS at the same time.
will sony take games away from ps4 to release content for their new handheld?
they should just let nintendo dominate the handheld market imo.
Yeah agreed... especially since Sony has closed down a lot of their 2nd-tier 1st party studios.
Not sure why it's being compared to switch. Switch looks more like a big psp...
That picture looks more like a phone peripheral than anything else.
The patent annotates the actual screen/ports as well, and not just the controls, indicating that this isn't a phone peripheral, but a new portable gaming device.
Sony has mishandled their last two portable outings pretty badly. My advice to them is to not do this and stick with what's currently working.

their problem is their eco system. too large right now between the psvr ps4 and the pro
I doubt they will even have many exclusives for it. They will port them to console and share buy. And this will be cool, unlike W10 Xbox doing it, for some reason to a select few.
@charizard1605: Could be an easy win for the next xbox after scorpio. Double down on powerful home console hardware that demands a boxed cooling solution and higher energy draw a-la traditional console. I don't think anyone could blame them.
The question is, IF the Switch is successful enough to introduce a new paradigm that Sony wants to change, will there be enough of a market for the traditional paradigm?
@charizard1605: Business 101. Create an edge and leverage its virtues. Lord knows, Sony found profound success sticking to what they do this gen. Nintendo is most successful when it can innovate with purpose. XBox hasn't really completely done it's own thing yet.
If I were on the Board of Directors at Microsoft, I would be highly weary of positioning another device to detract from the Surface in my own product line. A traditional console does not pose much of a threat or overlap in that regard.
@kend0_kap0ni: PlayStation Shift
Playstation Snap? You just snap the 2 separate PS controls in and play all your PSN games on the go in a Snap? I know, that was lame of me :x
Honestly, if those are detachable (almost certainly are) then it's like the switch but better. It's much more ergonomic. They would probably put better processors as well. A bit of a copy yes, but the switch is a bit of a copy of the vita.
The nagging issue would be the software. It couldn't just share ps4 software, since it wouldn't take bluray discs I'm sure. So it would going in with the vita software strategy, which many considered to be the system's achilles heel. Maybe there could be shared downloaded software to the ps4 through an account- or- maybe you could hook the vita 2 to the ps4 and transfer even a disc game over to it.

I actually hope they dont do another Handheld. I liked the PSP, but thats it. They dont have any good firts party studios to make consistent content for their handhelds and third party dont see any point in making games for their handheld systems.
