Nintendo's Reggie congratulates PS4, Xbox One launch, but says 'you need games'

The president of Nintendo of America has congratulated Sony and Microsoft on the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but couldn’t resist having a dig at the Big N’s rivals all the same.

Speaking at VGX 2013 (via

DualShockers

) over the weekend, Reginald ‘Reggie’ Fils-Aime suggested that any new hardware on shelves is healthy for the industry as a whole, but it wasn’t long before he cheekily had a few choice words to say about his rivals’ software efforts.

"This industry loves brand new hardware and anything that’s good for the industry is good for Nintendo, so you know, they’re having a fantastic launch, kudos to them," he said.

"This industry is all about what happens six months down the road, what happens a year down the road."

“So, you’re here to kick their ass,” quizzed host Joel McHale. In response, The Regginator highlighted the success of Wii U’s Super Mario 3D World, and put it out there that ‘pretty hardware’ is nothing without the software to back it up.

Fighting talk? You bet.

"You know? You said that," he replied.

"For us, what we love to do is to bring great new games, innovative gameplay, that’s what Nintendo’s known for, and as long as we do that, we’re gonna drive our hardware business. We’re seeing that right now with 3DS and we’re seeing it right now with Wii U as well, on the backs of Super Mario 3D world.

"3D World is doing quite well here in this market, so that’s wonderful to see. We love to see all the articles that have come out saying that for this holiday Wii U is the system to get. That’s come out by Times, by Forbes and a variety of different outlets

"What people recognize is that having pretty hardware is one thing, but you need games, and right now we’ve got some of the top rated games on our system, and it’s games that you can’t play anywhere else, so yeah, we’re feeling very good about where we are."

Hilariously ironic. They must have forgotten show shit the U release was when it comes to games.

I think sheep and Nintendo like to ignore multiplats on the other consoles so they can feel they stand a chance.... How about we slap them in the face with upcoming multiplats in the next 2 years ? Because they are games and we play them.. we play more multiplats than exclusives it would seem. Today multiplats are the main core of console gaming i would say.

The WiiU has managed to look good compared to launch systems.

Quite the victory.

Ironic coming from Reggie. As one who bought a WiiU at launch, the fact that I had to wait a full year for anything worth playing...and considering the console has the worst 3rd party support of any major system on the market today (including Vita and 3DS), he really has no room to talk down his nose. At best, he should be speaking with great humility and presenting it as a cautionary tale.

Yes, because the WiiU didn't launch a full year ago. I bet I won't be waiting a year for great exclusive software on my PS4 or One. I bet you that damn much.

#13 Posted by John_Matherson (2031 posts) -

LMAO.

Let's hope a Metroid would save the WiiU. Otherwise I wouldn't be talking if I were him.

As of Oct 17, 2013 there are 216 games available for the WiiU with 44 exclusives. That doesn't include COD: Ghosts, Assassins Creed: Black Flag, or Super Mario 3D World.

don't you, reggie?

Reggie loves games so much he doesn't announce any.

Just characters for games.

Perhaps he needs to be reminded of how lackluster the Wii U launch was? Or how six months after its launch, it didn't have any must-have software due to delays? Or how Wii U has thus far missed the projected sales milestones by a decent margin? Or the huge lack of 3rd party support?

Yeah, you need games, but Wii U didn't exactly have them when it launched. It's his job to spin things, I suppose.

I genuinely hope the sheep of system wars won't comment on this thread because they will get butchered.

Reggie... Bro... Pls. The Wii U........... Wii U...... Reggie stop, you are in no position to open your mouth....... Fukin spin spin spin....... A full fuking year.......... Gaddamnit nintendo...

The WiiU had a better launch than the PS4 and X1 actually. The hilariously ironic part is the "Its what happens six months to a year down the road" comment he made which the WiiU has seen a great first month but then drought, major developers leaving and loss of exclusivity on games.

Lol least we have a good third party support, Nintendo has non who care lol, more games have come out at launch than the whole of Wii U up till now lol

Well Reggie you need some third party support, better online service, and better hardware.

#46 Edited by ImDaMan4Realz (94 posts) -

Oh please! ✋ Nintendo, the ps4 and x1 just came out less than a month ago. The wii u is a year old and only has a few rehashes to its library with no 3rd party support. Go away and worry about your own failing pos system.

#47 Posted by Netherscourge (16328 posts) -

Well, Reggie, Nintendo is more than welcome to start making games for the PS4 and the XB1!

;)

No he's not. The consoles launched a couple of weeks ago.

I can say with certainty I believe he is 100% wrong.

I meant he is right that games sell hardware, nothing more, nothing less.

The second part of my statement was aimed directly at him and Nintendo's dismal performance in bringing compelling content to the Wii U for its first year.

He comparing what the Wii U has now to what the PS4/Xbone has right now. In those terms he is right.
