unless someone has a awesome trade in deal, i'm passing.
Sounds like a good revision. Wonder how the market will respond.
There will be people that will buy it. Specifically those that don't own one yet. But they're going to have a tough time getting people who already own one to buy it.
If its really a 2x increase I'll just sell my current PS4 to help pay for the PS4K. Probably could easily get $250 for my PS4 on Craigslist. So, I'm only paying $150 out of pocket for a superior experience.

So basically the ps4K is barely what the ps4 should have been from the start if it had gone the same route with a high-end gpu like it's predecessor. Since the 7970 was available at year before the ps4 release.
Not that it's even close to what's needed to run modern games at 4K. Some may be 4K but most will certainly be upscaled.
It makes no sense for them to only upgrade the GPU. They also need to upgrade the CPU as well or its gonna be bottlenecked even more than it already is.
Exactly. Right now we are looking at a GTX 970 tflop wise and a second gen iPad mini CPU. That makes perfect sense. They are better off raising the price $100 and upgrading the CPU too like they are debating doing. Or we will see a PS4.75 in 2017.
Never compare FLOPs across architectures. GTX 970 is closer to 2.5x as powerful as PS4's GPU.
I know, I know , I know. I was just jumping on the hyperbole train. I'm having fun with this stuff.

One word "exclusives" made only for the new PS
I wonder if cows will sudenly notice all those differences between the ps4 and ps4k versions of the game while they couldn't tell when it was ps4 vs maxed out pc versions.
I like how this is going to support the PSVR, remember Sony proudly saying there's already over 38million PSVR ready devices on customers?
Implies there will be native 4k games...lol fake
It will have a 4k blu ray player and will upscale games that are not natively 4k.
This. The PS4 will need more than 2X the gpu to do 4K. It can barely do 1080p/30 with the one it has now.
4k 30fps?
Native 4K is a little over 4 times the resolution of 1080p. An equivalent GPU would have to be at least four times more powerful. And even then, there's not guarantee off a steady 30fps framerate.
they were discussing a better CPU which would raise the price to $499.99
They stated that the GPU is twice as powerful as standard PS4 and much faster.
It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.
It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system

Sounds amazing.

A 980Ti and a X99 struggle with high settings at 4K and that costs over £1000....
@howmakewood: $399 for a GPU that's double the power, better blu ray, and 4k upscaling sounds close to taking a loss on every sale, unless they are making a boatload right now on every PS4 sold.
@clyde46: they did change the SoC I believe on the 360, so there were very mild hardware changes, but I agree this is like the N3DS but way bigger.
Anyways so if you want the "true" PSVT experience it is now going to be around $1000 ($499 for the PS4 [they will need the better CPU for VR and the GPU upgrade], and $499 for the PSVR camera and move), this is reaching Rift price territory. Because let's be honest, all VR games will want to take advantage of the power.

A PS4K will sell well enough to justify its existence. There will be enough console enthusiasts who will upgrade. Just look at the 360 Elite for reference, the only thing it had over the launch 360 was an HDMI output and bigger HDD, yet it still sold really well.
4K tv's already upscale btw, but glad to see people get overly hyped about ps4k potentially doing it

So basically like the New 3DS
I guess. Only more expensive.
No trade in program? A sure shot in the foot and also... **** off Sony, if they don't make a decent offer for a trade in.
My thoughts exactly. If it's $400 then a $200-250 trade in for our current PS4's would soften the blow. No way I'm about to spend another $400 for an upgraded PS4.
they don't need to, most game retailers offer trade ins on old hardware towards a new one and i don't know how it works in the rest of the world but the trade in Values are not terrible over here especially on the Ps4 and xbone.

Exactly. Which is why I call BS on all of this.
Trying to get some info on this whole PS4k deal. Honestly, I don't think it's such a bad idea as long as games are transferable between units. This seems like the next step in keeping up with tech and similar to how PC is set up now.
The 2x more power sounds like a win to me. Everything should be maxed out at 1080p with 60fps with that jump.
Seems a lot of people are up set, I can't seem to understand why tho lol.
If this is all true I think it's tied to PSVR being such an underwhelming experience and they are heavily invested in it so they are putting out an ideal system to pair with PSVR.
If it all not fake.

I doubt its main appeal is it having a quality scaler. It's being made because of PSVR and perhaps to compete with XB1.5 and NX.
Nah, just some people getting excited over it on that gaf thread
I wonder if cows will sudenly notice all those differences between the ps4 and ps4k versions of the game while they couldn't tell when it was ps4 vs maxed out pc versions.
I wonder if cows will suddenly be ok paying $500 for an upgraded console yet still continue slamming pc gamers for spending money on upgrades

Nobody is saying the PS4K will run games in 4K natively. You're misunderstanding those comments. The 4K aspect of the console will be the fact it will have a 4K Blu-ray player for movies. The 2x GPU boost is for PSVR development and to help combat the XB1.5 and NX.

Ofcourse they will.

General consumers are dumb, they are going to see this and expect 4K gameplay.

I don't get why people are upset about this either. Everyone knows there is a going to be a mid-cycle refresh for a slim model. This time, the mid-cycle refresh might include a hardware boost. So what? A hardware boost isn't a negative, the only negatives could be be with how they treat the userbase (i.e. do they attempt to 'split' the user-base or make PS4K exclusives, as I would view that as a problem).
I do believe it's stupid if they are going for a $499 price point, unless they are changing the model lineup and offering MULTIPLE price points on multiple different models (i.e. selling a PS4 for $299 and PS4K for $499). But jacking up the price and having a price gap that large would seem to really split the userbase. That implies the the two machines are worlds apart. Those are valid concerns. However if they are going for 2x power, and can keep the $349/399 price, and all games remain compatible with the original PS4 (i.e. no PS4K exclusives).... what is the problem exactly?
I know I"m interested in trading for a quieter/slimmer model... if it has more performance I view that as a bonus.

Sony will release PS4 remasters for PS4K
And I'm cancelling my PSVR pre-order the games will obviously look horrible on PS4 and you will need the PS4K for the better experience
I bought a PS4 and Xbox One at launch and its only been 3 yrs and Sony release a better PS4 leaving me with the inferior product, we bought these system expecting 7 - 8 yrs of life not to upgrade them 3yrs later

Well they will hopefully get clean upscaled 1080p content on their 4K displays and like it.
Do you people not have Kijiji or Craigslist where you live? Sell your Ps4 there if need be. People are always looking for consoles.
What do you think the sudden flood of used PS4 machines is going to do to the pricing?
Time will tell. I find it kind of silly people expect Sony to offer some sort of trade in program.

Law of economics, you flood the market, the value of said item falls through the floor. Doesn't take a genius to figure that one out. Just look at what the Chinese are doing to the global steel markets.
@adamosmaki: Now their eyes can see the difference between 1080p and (upscaled) 4K.
gpuking will be proud.
So the new PS4 will be around 7950 level of power now considering what they have able to do with the current ps4 power I'm sure it will be pretty damn good and all for only $400-500 but the only true 4K gaming machine for modern high end games will be the PC it will come at a higher cost but it can be done if you have the money and want to.
If true I guess this confirms that PS4.5 won't be using AMD's new Polaris architecture. It would have bigger gains if they used Polaris.
dno, can they dig more than double the power out of old AMD chips w/o going up on power consumption/heat?

Only so much, its not a lot to work with to start with plus you have to take into account how are you going to cool everything. The PS4 runs hot as it is.

This is what I've been saying. That Bluray is what all this 4K stuff is related to. But people are insisting on spreading the rumor that games will be 4K as well. That's the part I call BS on and I'm with you. The 2x Boost would most likely be the additional built in hardware for VR that I've been guessing as well. It's likely, if true, that the 2X will only be used in the case for VR.
