"While PS4's sales are outpacing PS2, Nintendo's Wii -- launched in the fall of 2006 -- is another story worth noting. Severely supply constrained during its first year on the market, Wii's sales ticked-up significantly by the end of 2007. Nintendo had a strong holiday season in 2007, and by April of 2008, nearly 25 million Wii consoles were in the wild, a number Sony is very unlikely to match."
Imagine if the Wii didn't have supply constrains issues. It would have sold more then 30 million by April 2008. It sold just over 20 million at the end of 2007. The PS4 won't reach those numbers worldwide. I doubt it will outsell the PS2 either.
Wii sold just under 20 million in first year, PS4 isn't going to make it that close, it took took much of a decline mid-year.

The Wii was far cheaper than the PS4 though. And a casual crowd buys things in droves. See smartphone sales.
Doesn't matter. It still had supply constraints. It was $250 when it launched. PS4 is selling in droves at $400 and I'm sure there are casuals buying it as well. The PS2 was $299 when it launched.

It is outselling the PS2 now by a considerable margin, and the wii i am sure it will beat it silly to,the wii started fast but die rather quick and the sales just tanked after certain time,in fact it took longer for the wii to reach 100 million that it did the PS2,even that it started faster.
The wii had no legs i am sure the PS4 will have more legs than the wii, also the wii was $250 not quite $400 like the PS4 and even cheaper than the Ps2 at launch, the PS2 also had shortages and the first 7 months of its life the unit was confined to Japan alone it wasn't until late 2000 that it landed in US.
Not quite apples to apples.
I would ask why the hell is it doing so good with such a lame library, but I'm part of the problem lol. I just couldn't resist getting one.
Sony mind control ftw.
Now outpace them in terms of good games, and we'll be golden.
Dude, the PS2s first year lineup was terribad!
Correct me if I'm wrong (seriously my memory sucks sometimes), but I'm pretty sure I was playing MGS2, FFX, Tony Hawk 3, Ico, Gran Turismo 3 and Silent Hill 2 within the PS2s first year on the market... and those are just off the top of my head, pretty sure there was more. Again, maybe having rose tinted goggles here, but I remember the PS2 being a beast its first year out.

Ahh, I got it when it launched in Japan. LOL, I think maybe you are right about the west.

Yeah but the casuals that ate the Wii are gone now...their damage done.
Nice infographic and great accomplishments for one year. You get a sense that Sony is very clear on the direction they want to head towards. I see stability, growth and confidence, and the meeting of goals. This is why they will continue to get games from every publisher out there.
If this were Bintendo, we'd see a white background with dumb Mario's face all over with one fist in the air, and pathetic year-one numbers and lots of Bintendo confusion about what went wrong, and why people aren't buying their console. Study this infographic and figure it out.
Yeah woo sales. Too bad the quad has nothing of note to set it apart from other gaming machines besides Infamous.

Exactly. PS4 is selling well and this is with competing in the post-pc era.

imagine there is no heaven, imagine there is no countries, imagine no possession, imagine blackace not being a fanboy...imagine
It deserves it. Its an excellent console with a bright future ahead of it. And to all the people who say they don't have a reason to get one: Google "shareplay" and "2015 ps4 games"
It won't be outpacing the Wii or it won't be in wii league sales for long. The Wii sold like 24-25 million in it's second year. The PS4 won't touch that.
Yeah thankfully for sony the gen doesn't last 2 years.
The wii had very short short legs it outsold the PS2 the first few years but then lagged behind it badly, the PS4 may fall behind the wii the first 2 or 3 years but i am sure will outpace it after that, the PS2 did.
Nintendo reach 100 million in Summer 2013 almost 7 years after releasing the PS2 took 5 years, and even that the PS3 and xbox 360 started way lower they are basically like 16 million units from the wii, something that didn't happen with the PS2.

The difference after 4 years the Wii completely died , while the PS2 still had life. The wii may have sold the fastest but its nowhere near the PS2 and never will be. I do not think the PS4 will outsell the PS2 either but only because I do not expect this console generation to be as long.

Pretty sure the ps2 had crap for games for a good long time after launch.
One year in, the PS2 had ICO, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, Final Fantasy X, and Metal Gear Solid 2.
The PS4 has Knack and DriveClub.
@speak_low: I'm sure those dang dirty sheep are dumping chemicals into your tap water and tapping into your phone signals too right?
@charizard1605: I love how most of the games you listed were third party yet you completely ignore the ps4's third party games

The PS2 third party games are also exclusive.
I don't see any inconsistency.
And still no games.
It's pace is going to come to a screeching halt very soon (probably early next year).

Sort of like how the Wii U only having SM3DW after its full year?
Oh, there are other Wii U games I'm forgetting? Well, you conveniently left off other games for PS4 (and refuse to accept any PS4 multiplatform titles as games) so I can argue like I'm 5 years old too. Wii U had only one worthwhile game to set it apart in its first year.
Where did I mention Wii U? I was just mocking how into the PS4 you are when it has nothing to warrant a purchase. You should see a therapist over your Nintendo obsession dude.
And still no games.

I don't know why on earth you would think that. The old "only selling on hype" idea I guess. The PS4 looks set to keep selling well, with this list of games coming soon.
And still no games.

That assumption is about to get thrown out the window in a few weeks.
The PS4 will sell like crazy this holiday season.
Actually I see all three consoles doing very well this holiday. They each have something going for them.

Well, more specifically for the PS4. I can say with a degree of certainty that some parents are going to want to hold on to their gift receipts this year if they jumped on another console just because of a "deal."

I cant believe Gamespot lets known fanboys became mods.

That's right, Japan did get it in advance by almost a year.. yeah, I guess that would have been some shit lol. First year in the US was strong though.
Damn I miss the days when you could go buy a new console with a killer app on day 1 and expect more hits to be just around the corner. Nobody does that anymore.
Hyundai outpaces Cadillac. It doesn't mean there is more to offer or it is better.
It just means we all can't have the best. For that group that can't have the best, there is PS4s.

Yes, how dare mods be normal people with preferences of their own
