I like how he puts it...the gameplay is most important, and telling a story isn't as important as the player experiencing their own story.

What do you say, shots fired at Sony and movie station?

Not sure why you think Sony is the only one that has a story in their games 😆

Least surprising take ever. But of course what he actually said is a bit more nuanced.

It’s always amusing seeing folks trying to put their own spin on things. 😅

It didn’t sound like he was taking a shot at anyone. 🤷‍♂️

Just like our local sheep and graphics, you pretend to dislike what you can't get. Nintendo has no idea what motion capture is. Imagine them trying to create a game with such incredible presentation, it rivals cinema.

Exactly the same thing applies to story. They have been regurgitating the same childish "save the princess" for 30 years, and have the audacity of talking shit about well written stories, something that immerse you into the cast? gtfo.

He is basically saying Gameplay First and that he designs games with a core game loop and mechanic in mind, and integrates a story later on. This isn't really anything new. He doesnt really oppose a story, he just doesnt design games with stories in mind.

He wants the players to experience the game part itself, through their own subjective lens, rather than going through the experience being the same narrative everyone goes through.

This is why Nintendo makes the best games... Gameplay comes first, as it should. Unlike PlayStation, where gameplay is something to fill the gaps between cutscenes.

Is that why Sony is winning goty on yearly basis while Nintendo hasn't won anything in ages?

Way too many games are taking inspiration from TLOU, Uncharted and the likes.

Why can't games be like Mario? Simple story, mindblowing gameplay.

Yeah, Nintendo is the best, they don’t dictate you with boring shat story. They let you make your own.

I'm a firm believer of games being dictated through gameplay causing a different experience for everyone.

The way you play Mario will be different from the way I play mario.

And in RPGs and Immersive sims it should be even more so.

In a movie game we are playing someone else's story, not our own, so the playthrough you have in TLOU (or one of its many clones) will be the exact same as my experience. Cutscenes don't tend to change.

Why can I watch a playthrough of TLOU on youtube in its complete state, but I can't watch episodes of the TLOU hbo show on youtube?

I mean, what's the difference?

Miyamoto doesn’t seem fond of games having stories in general. You would never see him make a JRPG. This might explain why Nintendo acquired MonolithSoft (makers of Xenoblade) since they wanted a studio that makes games with good stories.

Funny thing is, Miyamoto apparently may have wanted to produce anime instead of video games before he joined Nintendo. If he did join an anime studio, he would need to have a storyline in it. There is no anime with just pure action without some storyline.

@lavamelon: I never cared for Xenoblades story, it’s gameplay is top notice for a jrpg though. It’s so addicting.

@blaznwiipspman1:

Well, I'd argue that Sony "movie" games set out to be completely different from Nintendo games. Having played exclusive games from both companies, I can safely say that gameplay actually does play a huge part in Sony "movie" games. Sure, you'll find plenty of 3rd person shooters trying to be like Uncharted or Last of Us but you won't find any as refined as those games. Same for God of War and even Spiderman. These games have both a strong focus on story AND gameplay. And well, why not have both? Though I am happy with Nintendo 1st party as it is too thankyouverymuch. 😋

@R4gn4r0k:

One is an interactive game while the other is a tv show? I mean, even if you do watch a playthrough of Last of Us, it's still not as fulfilling as playing it yourself. Because it's still a video game.

Yeah I like how you put it:

Prioritizing graphics or cutscenes over other aspects has led to bad games.

Likewise, games prioritizing microtransactions and in game shops over other aspects has led to some very bad games too.

@girlusocrazy: That's called flame bait, and trolling.

Good job, TC, you brought out the cow insecurity.

The fact that Miyamoto did not mention movie games or Playstation even once yet the cows think he's talking about them.

The thread title made me think of actual movie tie in games, like King Kong. Lol.

Miyamoto prioritizes gameplay over story, it’s not that he doesn’t like story. Thread is misrepresenting the actual dialogue.

His point regarding story I do agree. And it's my main problem with Sony's games. Being videogames and them being market leaders/trend setters, the complete lack of agency in story driven games is very disappointing and sets the whole medium back. That and how limited is their range as a publisher. Cookie cutter 3rd person adventures one after another.

Microsoft has done a much more interesting job as a publisher, and so is Nintendo which within their limited number of IPs are much more creative and out there. It would be amazing seeing Sony taking bigger risks.

I can play both games that involves storytelling and focus on gameplay so basically, this whole argument is silly to me.

@jaydan: it's not bait, it was miyamotos thoughts on movie games. You have to understand that Miyamoto san is very polite and this is doubly true because he's Japanese. If you read between the lines, at what he's really saying, you can tell his thoughts.

"Movie games are trash, and hell will freeze over before I make a movie game"

--Miyamoto, 2023

Even hardwenzen recognizes this fact, that miyamoto is trashing the cows and Playstation.

@kathaariancode: well said, very well said. The creativity in Sony games is lacking. Xbox and Nintendo are doing amazing things. Can we say that the cause of this is the cinematic, linear and movie game template that Sony is using?? I think so.

I think this is more a comment in response to how much fans of a certain sector of the Mario franchise hates his ass (Paper, RPG). Any digs at Sony is higher on the corporate ladder.

Imagine if Sony and MS weren't a thing, and Nintendo were the only ones creating games. You'd be still jumping on top of mushrooms and saving the princess 30 years from now. Zero advancements or innovations.

If he was innovating with ANYTHING, they'd be winning awards. Instead, we have shovelware such as Mario Strikers.

This company is living on nostalgia, and your brain is brainwashed by them.

I believe the internet kids would call him "based".

Which means "he's great" or some such.
