They must have meant MGS4, FFIX isn't even the best Final Fantasy game.
I'd say FFVII and FFX are the two best FFs. Its a shame how amazing this franchise once was, now its garbage.
One of my favorite games of all time. I wish Lead had articulated her reasons more clearly.
Also, is it sexist of me to roll my eyes when the female gamer gushes over the love story? (which is, btw, probably the best to date in videogaming)
It was posted on Valentine's Day, so that's why she was mainly focusing on the love story. While I wouldn't exactly consider it the very best romance in gaming, Zidane and Garnet do have some of the best chemistry in the series, with their relationship feeling natural rather than forced.
Also, female characters have always been a big part of what FF fangirls found appealing about the series, so that's kind of why her reasons focused so much on Garnet. And for what it's worth, she is one of the most well-written female characters in the series, almost like a Studio Ghibli heroine, i.e. a meek-looking girl who breaks out of her traditional gender role and builds up the inner strength to achieve great things. In other words, it's not difficult to see why a lot of fangirls would identify with Garnet.
I found her very forgetable. I like some of the other cast though.
She's not my favourite in the game either (that would probably be Vivi), but I'm just looking at it from the perspective of Leah (i.e. the girl talking in the video), and why a lot of fangirls like her would identify with Garnet. It wasn't just her character though, but FFIX as a whole felt a lot like the kind of RPG that Studio Ghibli would have made (before they made Ni No Kuni, that is). The same goes for the Game Arts RPG's (Lunar and Grandia series), which also had a similar tone to Ghibli anime and FFIX.

You are right. Final Fantasy IX is nothing short of pure art.
Barely could get through a quarter of the game before the slow combat system combined with the random encounters that take about 2 seconds to load, took its toll on me. It's a very polished game, but definitely not for me.
I'll stick with 16bit JRPGs. And Panzer Dragoon Saga.
I'm not an RPG fan, so I haven't played many. I get the feeling that VII may be more famous for being the first to successfully go 3D, like Mario 64. Because people seem to prefer some of the newer ones, yet the newer RPGs never seem to reach that level of fame or prestige as VII to a degree.

lol look at how different his body language is. He was open, trying to close the gap with the girl, trying to engage with her about her choice a little more. Now he's all closed up, 'let's talk about you're favourite game'.

Yeah, it would have been nice if they got a pretty fangirl gushing over how much she loves Samus...

In other words, typical male nerd behaviour.
Most woman prefer for their entertainment to include love stories, just the way things are. I have tried to get my sister and other friends to watch stuff like Arrow and other shows but the best I can do is get girls to watch Avatar: TLA or the latest supermodelhero movie.
I honestly thought FFIX was shit compared to the earlier games in the series.
I've played and enjoyed them all. Honestly, 9 was one of my least favorites in the entire series.
Lame characters, lame story, music was meh, combat was simple. There really was very little I enjoyed about the game outside of the environments and it blows my mind how it is considered a masterpiece now. Maybe I need to replay it to see what all the fuss is about as I remember it being a stain on the series.
I loved it but unfortunately I have not finished it. Thanks @Sweenix for reminding me why I must pick this title up again and try to completely finish it. I took the time to finish VII, VIII, X, X-2, XII, and XIII but unfortunately I have finished 9 and the 1-6 !!. I am still trying to collect EVERY Square Enix PS1 and PS2 titles but I am just taking it with a grain of salt. Square made beautiful titles in the past...

Pretty much how I feel right now as well lol.
That is a weird way to spell Baldur's Gate 2.
This.
or Starcraft
This girl has good taste, FFIX is my fav FF as well. How come IGN attracts all the cute chicks, while GS has erm....Tom mcshea? jk :P
Would like to see a Steam/PC release so I can actually play it. Or maybe I could find a really cheap PS copy.
Haha, what a joke. FFIX is arguably the best FF on the PS1, but greatest game of all time? I fucking LOVE FFIX, but it has far too many flaws to even be considered the best in the series, let alone the best game ever.
Obviously no game can ever be considered the best ever, but at least there are some that can be argued... FFIX is not one of those.
IX is definitely way better than VII or VIII.
and FF6 is better than all three of those combined
Sploosh
**** no.
IMO, FF9>FF6.
FF6's script/translation is more awkward, its characters are less vibrant (even if the overall breadth of its cast is more impressive), its towns and dungeons look kind of samey, etc. As amazing as FF6 is, I have no idea why people ride its dick so very hard.
@Gue1: To be honest, Final Fantasy (and to a greater extent, Dragon Quest) are both pretty casual/mass-market games as far as JRPGs go. Not that that is a knock on their quality, just an observation that they aren't niche and don't aim to be.
