I actually dont. I just find stupid liking a thing that is literally a hollow shelve. While we're at it, lets name some random rock as a great protagonist, cause thats essencially what Gordon Freeman is.

The beautiful think abotu Half Life though is that with the Black Mesa and Fake Factory/Cinematic mods the game has been able to age gracefully.

It actually does in some form but it does cutscenes right. It will never take control away from the player.

It didn't have cutscenes. Instead it had something worse. Locking you in a room while forcing you to listen to their drivel.

I haven't tried it out yet but I've heard great things about the Black Mesa mod for Half Life 1 which you should be able to find here. Edit: Never mind it's over 8 hours of gameplay and 14 chapters. Not 8 out of 14 chapters. My bad.

For Half Life 2 you have the Fake Factory Cinematic Mod which you can find here. I'm currently using the 2013 version which is the only version compatible with Steam. It's a little tricky but as long as you read the instructions you should be fine. Just remember that you need a copy of each Half Life 2 game on your PC and you also need at least one save in each of them.
