So i was thinking about it and i think Half Life(all games) are the only games that has no cutscenes at all? I mean no cutscenes, no waking up in different place... it´s all 1 big story.

Are there any good games too without any cutscenes that has story(not talking about RPG games)

Yeah, it's actually worse because you can't skip them. You're just mucking about.

I like replaying Half Life, but I don't like sitting through all those conversations again. There's no way around them.

Clearly you never played this game. Half Life and 2 are one of the highest rated FPS game ever. This changed gaming.

Halflife has 1 cutscene in it. The soldiers dragging Gordon Freeman. It lasts about 10 seconds. But yes, it's an amazing groundbreaking title games to this day attempt to copy.

Yeah, but most people aren't going to defend the stories in these games. They aren't really something to be praised.

My friend, these are called scripted story telling. Halflife popularized it. It is indeed a well known fact, 15 years or so on, many modern titles still ape it. With young 20 something reviewers who started gaming on consoles only recently, oblivious to this fact.

What does that have to do with whether or not The Witcher has cutscenes?

Technically it has them, but it's okay. They're few, and far between. I think the first game only has one I can remember, and it lasts a few seconds.

I really love Half Life's storytelling. The story gets better and better every time I play it.

I agree my friend. Part of the reason (which halflife 2 fails) is that you feel like a cog in the machine with the outside world operating regardless of your existence and without explicit spelling out what is going on. Something modern games are practically incapable of barring perhaps stalker and a select few others.

I remember it having an on rails tram ride, that's about as dull as a cutscene.

Exactly what I was thinking, instead of 5 minute cutscenese which are usually skippable, you get 5 minute conversations that are not skippable at all...

At least Half Life has some nice little physics objects you can mess around with while waiting I guess :/

If you ask me they basically have cutscenes. There's multiple sections in the games where you're not allowed to advance until people stop talking. So what if they're done in engine and you can hop around like a moron? It's pretty much the same thing.

Yeah, it's one of the few games that doesn't.

It's not going to change anytime soon, because these days there are cutscenes that explain how to move your character forward or how to accelerate when driving a car -_-

Yeah while they're great and very natural and interactive blah blah it kills my desire to reply the game sometimes.

It's like Assassin's Creed 1 where you stood there witnessing everything, it was a cool idea but for a game it's awful

Portal 2 ?

Bioshock Infinite ?

Bioshock 2 ?

They barely had cutscenes, Portal 2 had about 3. Bioshock 2 had 2. Infinite didn't have any.

It amazes me people who know about Half-Life games don't understand why Gordon Freeman is the way he is. Valve made him very transparent because they wanted the player to feel more like they're a part of the game's situation and environment. If you think back to Half-Life you will remember how you never see Freeman and that all the characters talk directly to you. They face you, look at you and talk about your situation.

Essentially Gordon Freeman as a character only serves to give you the basic foundation of where you are in Half-Life and to let characters address you. You're a scientist, it's a typical day on the job and that's it. They drop you in and the story unfolds directly to you as Freeman.

Oh man. Such a good game. I played it for the first time this year (Half-Life 1). So good. And I really liked how it was one big thing. During the parts where it is tame and it's loading up the next section (ie instead of using a cut scene), I would still be cautious because I don't know what's going to happen.

yep. instead of cutscenes, you get to stand there for a few minutes as the game attempts to have characters interact and talk with a mute without it being awkward and acknowledging gordan freeman is merely just a body with no emotions that the player controls. and you can't skip these parts.

in other words, they were too lazy to create a real character or pay a voice actor and said "**** it. YOU are the player". happens too goddamn much in games. If they really wanted to send that message, he wouldn't already have a name and a backstory.

Hell, by comparison, Master Chief is Shakespeare.

Yeah, I understand the whole "leave the protagonist as a blank slate as to allow the player to more easily assume the identity" design philosophy...but it doesn't allow me to actually CARE for a character at all.

The method is perfect for a videogame. It keeps it entirely interactive, without the take control away cutscene.

What sucks is the part where the game
A: has no way of you being able to skip it(that should be addressed). Which lets be real, they could easily add.
B: Half Life and Ass Creed tell shit stories, and who the hell wants to relive that?

It also has a shitty story and a lame main character.

Gordon Freeman lame? That's blasphemy!!!!! I for one liked the story and the protagonist. One of the few games I played thru more than once.

How dafuq did you like the protagonist when he doesnt have any personality...? like, literally

Why do you care what and who I liked?

I actually dont. I just find stupid liking a thing that is literally a hollow shelve. While we're at it, lets name some random rock as a great protagonist, cause thats essencially what Gordon Freeman is.
