I tought the STALKER series sold well enough on the PC so this is surprising to me.

aroxx_ab

It sold extremely well on the PC,almost 5 Millions as of last year. This has nothing to do with sales.

Sales of all 3 games combined? if so that is extremely bad if compared to all the bragging PC gamers do

The other 2 were stand alone expansion packs, using the same engine and assets as the first game. Hence why the new one was being called STALKER 2.

They should have ported their games to consoles, or at least had someone else do it, to help pay for development of Stalker 2.KC_Hokie
Or they should have saved costs by not developing Stalker 2 for consoles. It's not like those games would have sold well to the console crowd, anyway.

Apparently you've been living under a rock, because that's exactly what they had planned for Stalker 2.

This sucks, I've been waiting for Stalker 2 forever now.

The first 3 games were amazing.

Like I said they also could have had someone else port the game for them. This happens all the time and benefits the original developer.

I never read they were porting the first game and it's expansions in order to pay for the development of Stalker 2.

[QUOTE="adamosmaki"] and exactly how many games without the backing of Sony or MS or the huge advertising campaign of EA/activision and the huge development costs manage to sell that good ?DraugenCP

Don't know, but if you go say a game sell "extremely well" you expect higher numbers than only 5millions for 3games combined...

For a niche Eastern European game with a low budget and little advertising, 5 million copies is pretty damn impressive.

Don't bother with that kid. He is one of the worst trolls here.

The Stalker games are the type that wouldn't work well on consoles. "the game was being positioned to go worldwide, but ran into an issue with publishing on a console. Ultimately, the deal fell apart and without a publisher, the studio could not finish the project." Seems to me that trying to move onto consoles is one of the reasons the studio closed its doors.

That is quite horrible. But it might be for the best, with the game being planned for consoles.. When has a PC exclusive series not been way worse when moved to consoles?

Meh, SoC was great but they failed to capitalize on it, the sequels didn't evolve and were worse in many ways. If I had my way the guys behind Metro would take over the IP and create a more focused and polished experience.

Just reeks of mismanagement; you just can't sell that number of games and still go under without royally screwing up somewhere.

I've read gossip that the head of the studio is under investigation for tax fraud and skimming off profits for himself.

Don't know if there's any truth to that.

Call of Pripyat actually evolved the series in a lot of ways. More freedom, more intricate side quests, a quite nice weapon upgrading system, more choices and ways to complete missions.

Yeah but it still felt old and clumsy compared to other games. Not that I think the quality of their games was the reason they closed, obviously they sold well, it's just the reason I don't care.

Brokering a deal can mean life or death in a variety of ways for developers. Publishers shut down and cutoff titles, or actually move development - as they're supposed to really. Trying to expand beyond your capacity without locking down a publisher would mean scaling back - so none of this adds up quite frankly

...I really need to buy the other games soon. Stalker 2 sounded good from what I read.

I don't really get why people are so enthusiastic about the idea of the IP ending up in someone else's hands. Doesn't anyone remember what happened to Operation Flashpoint? As for 4A, I can't see why they would want the series when they already have a franchise that is aesthetically close to it. Despite the two games being rather different in terms of design, I still think it'd be like fishing in the same, not too big pond. Besides, Metro 2033 was good, but not nearly as great as STALKER.

Why did law enforcement want control of GSC? Odd.

Shame about it all though. STALKER was a hell of an atmospheric series. Even if STALKER 2 was really STALKER 4. :P

I see opportunity for MS to easily scoop up another worthy developer to make Xbox 360/PC titles for them... but of course that probably won't ever happen.

I'll give it kudos for having awesome atmosphere but it just wasn't fun and involved way too much running back and forth. And the time limits on quests? Yeah, that was dumb too.

But man, when I went underground for the first time and couldn't see six inches in front of me, and there were mutated growls I felt chills man.

It's just odd that law enforcement wanted control of the company. That's what has me most curious (cuz I wasn't going to buy STALKER 2 anyway).

Terrible idea. Knowing MS they would just gobble it up, cancel PC version and then turn the IP into another consolized title. Which would propably flop anyway forcing final closure of the studio.

Side quests sucked in Shadow Of Chernobyl. It was all about the mainquest. Call Of Pripyat had incredible sidequests though. Every single one was different.
