Great list, the only franchises I didn't play on the list are Guilty Gear and Tekken.

I agree...although I find the games extremely fun...its not really a fighting game...its a brawler and you can get the same effect from playing beatem ups. Its like an updated Double Dragon...with pokeballs.

Overall a fair list. I'm glad Virtual Fighter gets some recognition. (VF2 at the time was awesome).However I did enjoy Smash Bros more than Mortal Kombat, Tekken and Killer Instinct. Surprise no mention of Smash Bros. or Powerstone. I would put the Capcom Versus series much higher. (second or third). I have yet to play Guilty Gear but I am getting the new one for the Ps2 this week.

EDIT: I find it funny and glad that Dead or Alive didn't make it.

and smash bros is tied with street fighter seeing as both third strike and melee are the best fighters ever, on a competitive level. any fighter with Infinities are trash

There is no way a garbage fighter like MK should even make the list. If you think MK series is good, then you should check to make sure you actually like fighters and not your memories of being twelve. I'll say this upfront, I don't like smash. With that said, its system mechanics and presentation are certainly better than KI and Samuai Shodown. VF series is underrated. VF5 is an excellent game. Tekken was underrated a bit on the list. Guilty Gear is actually my favorite fighter. If you can get over the anime look and huge learning curve, it's a great competitive game.

I've grudgingly put SF at number 1 simply because a lot of the mechanics we see in fighting games originated from this series. Don't misunderstand me. The original SF2 is hot garbage and SF1 is basically unplayable. SF has continously tried new things and moved the series in positive directions. It's also more popular than most the others on list (not in Japan).

As long as Tekken and Soul Calibur are up there, I am happy. Those are pretty much the only fighting series i care to play. Some others are ok like the Street Fighter series, but not as good as Tekken and Soul Calibur. I wish they would make another Bushido Blade.

Smash brothers melee or Brawl were both better than Killer Instinct. Killer Instinct was very cool but also had somebroken characters.

Mortal Kombat was a popular game, but it's not really in the same caliber as other fighters that didn't make the list like Dead or Alive, Rival Schools and Smash Brothers. The same goes for Killer Instinct.Senor_Kami

No SSB = list fails IMO. Whatever I am glad SC is up there, through it should be higher IMO.

Still, it's good to see somebody out there realises how much VF dominates all other 3D fighters.

Tekken is way better than soul calibur, should've got a higher score. Street fighter being on #1 isn't arguable.

Well, I think a lot of people don't consider Smash series a fighting game. It has nothing to do with the how good the game is, it has to do with if the game fits into the fighting genre. A lot fighting game players will tell you it doesn't and a lot of smash players will say it is. I really don't know.
