So GameTrailers just had a roundtable discussion about Nintendo's upcoming third person shooter, Splatoon, and... they absolutely loved it. The multiplayer is of course the star of the show, and they just love how every single concept of modern shooters is upended on its head, but equally, they feel the single player is great as well, and gives the game an amazing amount of content overall.

You can check out their discussion here.

As for me, I am really hyped about Splatoon. I am sensing potential for it to be Nintendo's next big thing here.

@charizard1605:

Im hyped also, i love competitive games and ill probably be getting Smash Bros and this one. The one-on-one local multiplayer also has me very excited. I hope we can play vs each other with one using the gamepad and the other using the TV screen. Would be epic if they can pull it off. I want a t-shirt also like Miyamoto wears, im not sure why this game feels so addicting, ive already bought the Amiibo set and im trying to get a shirt to wear when i buy it. I usually never do this for new IPs. Maybe its the colors.

Eh, Shane Satterfield adored Resident Evil 6, and more so apologized for it. Everyone else was pretty down on that game.

It looks interesting. Still not hyped for it. I'll check it out later in the year. I hope Nintendo releases a demo.

We'll see. If you think this game is in the same league is pokemon or MK, you crazy. :P

I'm guessing it will be similar to Wonderful 101.

@Heil68: Lol, not quite as popular, no :p

I just think it will have a dedicated online community that will keep it alive. It's already gotten more marketing than TW101 ever did.

@charizard1605: Killzone 2 to this day still has a dedicated community. You can still find online matches, however it is for all intents and purposes "dead" :P

As for the game itself I initially liked the concept but the more I see the less interested I'm becoming. Dunno. Maybe it's just one those "you got to play it to get it" type of games.

The interest in the female squids is definitely... there. It's like the doll in Bloodborne. People need an excuse to buy these games.

@Desmonic: Yes, but I don't think it will be as 'active' as Killzone 2 is today. I think it will be a fairly active game, and most wii U owners who want to play stuff online will jump on board with it.

@Desmonic: Well, I hope you kid. You and I both know the install base, while a limiting factor, isn't one that necessarily applies to Nintendo games, those are more determined by attach rates, which is why they manage to pull insane numbers even on systems like GameCube or Wii U.

@mems_1224: Duh. Nintendo just disables it for a lot of their own games (or limits it to lobbies) but yeah, you can voice chat. You can voice chat on 3DS if you want, of course they would include it on Wii U.

From what I've seen of gameplay videos....it does nothing of the sort.

Well given the fact that the aim of the game isn't to kill your opponents, but rather paint as much of the stage in your color as possible makes a big difference. Especially since the weapons are designed with that goal in mind rather than the usual stuff you see in shooters these days. It's also really cool that the more of your ink covers the stage, the greater your teams mobility will be via that swimming mechanic.

I'm really curious to know how that feature that lets you jump to the action instantly will work out.

How far can one go to shake things up while keeping it in the same genre? Splatoon seems to deserve some merit on its different take on shooters.

So given that....you also shoot at the floor and walls. Thats not revolutionary or whatever they're trying to make it out to be.

It sounds like a new game mode. Nothing more.

Thats not what I'm arguing. The topic is not whether or not I can reinvent the wheel.

It's whether the wheel is just a wheel with new tread or not.

I get what you're arguing, but the way I see it the new tread is enough to consider it a very different wheel. I guess there's not much you can do to reinvent first person shooters, but Splatoon has things which set it vastly apart from other games in the genre, certainly enough to consider it more than another game mode.

Technically, it wouldn't be reinventing the genre b/c it's already been done.

But done right and given more than a F2P model of faith...Tribes is what I think of when ppl say reinvent the wheel.

Sooooooooooooooooooooo many shooters do nothing more than change up some outside stuff....whether it be Red Faction with physics, or Farcry with open world, or STALKER with astmosphere....then you have run of the mill shooters that bascially are just run and gun or cover type shooters.

Tribes....is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ANIMAL.

If you don't know what Tribes 2 is....look it up on youtube....not Tribes Ascend....Tribes 2. That is the game that I'm waiting for.

Thats pretty much what I read. It also said that it was one with the gamepad and the other with the pro controller. Hope it supports wii mote and nunchuk.

Kinda disappointing though if it doesnt support bots in that mode. A coop horde deal would have been awesome.
