The original game came out near the same time as skyrim, so a bunch of people missed it, but let me say one thing.

The game is incredible, in every single way except the story.

The gameplay is the best I have seen an open RPG have period, the bosses are huge, the game is HARD, the tactics are great, the diversity is amazing, it's FUN to play.

Try the game as a ranger, then try as a warrior, they play completely different.

Then play as a Sorcerer and your mind is gonna be BLOWN out of the water.

Seriously, I can't be more specific about sorcs in this game, It's the best mage in any game period, you make a huge difference.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ady863jQKEw

WATCH THAT VIDEO.

PS - Would also like to mention the game has 60+ hours of gameplay and just released an expansion with another 20+ hrs on top of it.

I have to agree Dragon's Dogma is in the top 3 underrated games this gen if not the most underrated. Capcom get's mad props from me for trying to make a WRPG style game, it's not perfect but they did a hell of a job. Dragon's Dogma class system is actually pretty amazing, specially it's the first game I've played in awhile that gave me the choice of playing as a Mystic Knight (magic using knight).

Standard?

Pawn system = never been done before

Class system = Rare

Jumping on bosses backs = never been done since shadow of colosses

It's the oposite of standard

The back tracking and fast travel is a problem for a large chunk of the game as you can only travel to one crystal (I think that's what they're called). Later on your can get more crystals (dozens of hours into the game that is).

Angry Joe's review pretty much hits the nail on the head, it's a great game.

10 hours into the game is not really that large, the game is very big and has a ton of exploring to do. Adding fast travel 10 hrs in is smart more then anything. Enjoy the envoroment.

I dono maybe it's weird, maybe Dogma Dark arison added something new, because I went to the gran location (main city) went to the black market and could buy as many ferry stones as I wanted for dirt cheap, and you can teleport 2 any of the 3 main locations in the game

Did you only play Dark Arisen? Or the original too? Dark Arisen fixed the back tracking problem a bit. In the original you could only fast travel to the main city (forgot what it's called)... look how huge the world is, that is terrible.

Fast travel problems aside (I don't mind it too much), it's a great game so I could overlook that.

People were still in the skyrim hype. I thought the demo was great but never got around to getting the full game. Once I catch up I might go ahead and get it.

I was enjoying it like crazy and I think I would have favored it over Skyrim (which to me is a mediocre game anyway). Then my save file glitched, and my backup copy was also glitched. So pretty much the only option would have been to start over. No thanks. Losing 30+ hours pretty much destroys my opinion for any game. Great gameplay, possibly worst "save system" ever since you are limited to one single save slot. I've read that the latest patch caused a widespread problem with save file glitching, so I'm sort of wondering when they fix that if perhaps it will allow me to restore my game from last year. Probably not, but I'm at least hopeful.

The lack of fast travel and respawning enemies killed it for me.

Stringerboy
Yea, the respawns reminded me of FC2......which is NOT good. Honestly, the back tracking wouldnt be as bad if i didnt have to fight the same enemies.......in the same location...........doing the same things..........and my pawns saying the same things. It was annoying. I was so glad when i paid for fast travel

I feel the opposite. I HATE games that depopulate permanently. It makes the world feel so dead so fast. That doesn't mean I want thing to repop inside of a few minutes, but here they don't. Its takes over an hour for a group of mobs to respawn.

I'll pick up Arisen and give it a try. Think I avoided it first time round because the pawn system didn't appeal to me, but heard a lot of good things about the game since. Also the new content is supposed to have a Dark Souls vibe to it, which can't be bad.

I believe it was underrated severely. From the very first battle against the snake, I was hooked. The fast travel and backtracking was a pain in the arse but I enjoyed my time in Gran Soren. Hoping there is a sequel!

What i meant is not have it be so scripted, or at least have a combination. Skyrim has set scripted events where you encounter animals and bandits, but also has sort of a free form encounter system where the ai does what wants and you encounter them by chance. Thats what i like. I dont like going to the same are (even an hour later) and have enemies come from the same location screaming the same thing, or harpy sitting on the same branch every time i pass through. Im not saying have them killed off permanently, just not super scripted and respawning like Far Cry. But yea, perma death enemies in an open world would make the game boring after a few hours.

I would have bought it if they released it out on PC; since they never did, though, that's a lost sale for them.

I have a PS3, and I've seen the game played for a while. The game looks like ass on console and the game severely needs some tweaking of the HP system to be any fun; a lot of the fights look really tedious simply because of how much HP both you and the enemies have. Now if it were released on PC, I'd hop on board and find a way to mod the HP values of the game.
