Gaming is great for two reasons. It is interactive (and thus has the capacity to force you to think and plan, with failure or success as consequence of your actions) and it is open enough that if you want something but can not find it, it is only because the technology isn't there, or you are not funding it. I mean I got some pretty weird and out there tastes, yet I am swimming in games that cater to them.

Maybe Kotaku has pull over high budget high profile action games. What of it? Let them rule the mass market fluff and bend it to their will. Right now the war is between bro-gamers and the PC police, and neither is going to turn Haloed Gears of BattleDuty into games I want to pour dozens of hours into.

They have no pull over Star Citizen. They have no pull over Paradox Studios. They have no pull over War for the Underworld. The have no pull over Rust. They can't touch Xcom. The new Alpha Centauri doesn't care what they think. Western and Eastern RPGs don't give a rat's tail about their opinion. Sim and Strategy games are almost completely off their radar. And while I don't have much interest in it, GTAV didn't lose a step when reviewers knocked of points because the game didn't fit their world view. (as if any aspect of that game should fit anyone's world view.)

The battle for the soul of blockbusters will be won by the most homogenized group. Everyone else will be happily playing the games developers make for them, because it doesn't matter how odd your tastes are, someone is going to want your money. Even if they don't, there is going to be a modder out there way more crazy then you are.
