Outspoken ex-World of Warcraft lead and CEO of Firefall developer Red 5 Studios Mark Kern has railed against current consoles and remains skeptical of their successors, yet he's interested in developing for Ouya.

Kern has no plans to bring Firefall to a future Sony or Microsoft console and remains skeptical at how successful they'll be. "I have an overall concern about how many people are going to buy these new consoles because everyone now is carrying a tablet, an iPhone, or they're at work on a PC. There's a lot of competition on the web for your attention."

"I think more and more it's hard to justify a separate device to do gaming if - and this is the big qualifier - if you can get that experience or an equivalent experience on something else. That something else hasn't arrived there yet," he said, but cited Ouya as a potential solution.

Kern countered by saying new tech is becoming increasingly affordable. "You can get a tablet for $200 now... the pricing are going to keep coming down." He also noted that people upgrade other devices like phones more frequently than consoles because a lot of those costs are subsidised by carriers.

The big appeal of Ouya to Kern is the open-platform. According to him, the platform holders' closed distribution model is stifling innovation and common household technologies are rendering the current console climate moot.

Comparing this to consoles he explained, "They have to be more open for the cost of entry... If you're only spending $200 maybe two years later you're fine getting another console.""

Eurogamer.

I don't care if old. So take that elsewhere.

I'll take my chances continuing to support the HD twins, Wii, and any other good console in the future. Besides, who is this guy?

he's talking sh*t about consoles and yet he's developing a game for a console? It seems ever year people say consoles are done and yet its making more money then movies and music. Just keep making games and leave the business analysist to the professional

Ouya is just a console that no one wants, I haven't heard anyone who knows about the Ouya say "I really want one of those". It is just a idea that people with more money than sense jumped on, I don't see the appeal in a console that plays Android games when so many people already have android devices in either Phone or Tablet form.

Hahaha nice, ANyway I don't think Ouya is the future but the concept it brings, a open friendly console that doesn't try to get a overwhelming stranglehold over you..much like PC's. I can See PCs and perhaps something like Ouya, a dev friendly open console that allows streaming games (Online is on board with Ouya) becoming big in the next...2 gens I guess ? idk we shall see how this one goes.

"They have to be more open for the cost of entry... If you're only spending $200 maybe two years later you're fine getting another console."

Given the guy's reasoning, both the PS3 and 360 are underpriced when averaged out on this biannual $200 mark.

His big "if" is exactly what's going to determine the next console race and Ouya's fate. Can you get virtually the same experience on a tablet as you can on a console? No, not even close (unless you're playing OnLive and your connection burns the airwaves).

The difficulty is in finding the right middle ground between manufacturing cost and system capability. It has to be considerably more powerful than tablets yet affordable enough to justify a media-only (primarily games) system. Anything over $400 would be asking to fail, IMO.

I have a gut feeling, too, all of the big 3 are going to try and get cute with controllers this next generation. Wii U already has its tablet controller, MS is likely going to do some kind of Kinect 2.0, and Sony knows they've got to make a move as well to capture the casuals (Wonderbook+Move just aren't cutting it). It's all about finding a balance between innovation, hardware progression, and affordability.

Lol no. Traditional stuff are always better.

Look at latest technologies and products, they are mostly gimmicks and stupid. This is why sometimes I wish that technologies would stop moving.

Considering most everyone's tiredness of this drawn out, stagnating console cycle, you may be about the only one who wants that.

Ouya is an underpowered pile of crap. It is designed more for freeware than actual big time games. Ouya is a joke and would be about half as power as the WiiU. The dude is a clown.

ouya is just a console that allows you to play android ports on your TV and with the general quality of android games i doubt MS and SONY have anything to Fear, i doubt many gamers would be interested in it beyond it's ability to run Emu's, i will continue to support mainstream consoles, android games where designed for something to do on your phone or tablet whilst you are on the bus,lol

I'm still not entirely sure what Ouya is. He does have a point about it being hard to justify having a seperate product that plays the same games with identical experineces. This is why no one is going to buy Batman on the Wii U.

But I welcome Ouya because more competition is a good thing.

There's one thing i can definitly say...Ouya will be better than phone/tablet gaming purely becuase you use pyhsical controls. Not touchscreen controls which are rather awkard and terrible to play games with (besides games like angry birds, cut the rope etc...)

From what I gather the specs for the Ouya aren't anything overly special and will probably be outdone by the Ps4, next Xbox, probably even the Wii U? although I'm not 100% on this. So chances are this console, the Ouya, won't be well supported by the big developers, but seems like for the indie scene it will be great. However I think what is being talked about here is how the big hardware makers, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, deal with distribution and ease of development will be affected and how they will have to maybe change is some aspects. Also the market for a dedicated console is still huge, I'm guessing, as tablets/phones won't be able to compete with the new ones, or the PC, untill the next generation is coming to an end again.

Ouya is outdone by the Vita and is not that much more powerful than the OG Xbox, let alone the Ps3/360. What it does have is a big RAM advantage that has been used to include high res textures and light maps that those "high-end" mobile games like Shadowgun, Nova 3 and Infinity Blade 1/2.
