Poll Character design: Western Vs. Japanese (111 votes)

Western , Rough and Realistic 56%
Japanese , Cute and Sexy 44%

I myself prefer western designs , It’s not because I hate Japanese’s video games, they all have a great gameplay and great designs especially when it comes to action/horror and hack-n-slash and as always no one denies the art of anime but it seems Japanese devs are losing touch with reality and chose to live in a world of fantasy, plus you can hardly see a new concept or new characters design from Japanese video game designers , in most cases it’s always been a 16 year old teenybopper with tits bigger than her head, dressed-up in bikini-clads or a lonely emo boy carrying a sword, the size of light post and when you mix these with a story full of melodrama bullshit what you get is a weeboo trash

I'm a bigger fan of Japanese art design for the most part unless it's generic moe shit, so let's go with that.

Let's talk about good western character design now.

Lol, just kidding.

Not just that, anime and manga encompass so many different styles of character design within itself that using one example constantly is just ignorant.

Nah, i'm just posting what anime typically looks like.

And even the "realistic" one you posted has those weird eyes and body.

Sometimes Western devs get it right when they make sexy looking ladies like Yennifer in Witcher 3...

But most of the time they fail. Japan is far more consistent with the sexy ladies. I rest my case....

What do you know, it's not actually "realistic" and isn't supposed to be. Were you too busy looking for something weird with her to notice the classic pointy nose?

I didn't post it because it was realistic, i posted it as an example of good art style.

Even realistic ones exaggerate facial features for more emotional impact.

Name me one good reason why they shouldn't.

But those japanese ones you posted barely look human. More like odd cartoon dolls. The western one looks realistic and thus 1000x hotter.

Why does it have wiry straw hair? I mean you could sand paint off of concrete with that mop And its like the character designer thought 'this doesnt look female enough' so he put about 10 lbs PSI extra into its lips.

Anyways anime eyes have always bugged me, so I'll never like their designs more then the west

I find the actress/model/cosplayer on the left more attractive... but if they actually tried to make her look like that in the game, it would turn out horrible. Whenever game developers try to create "realistic" character models, it almost always turns out bad and rarely ever looks attractive (must have something to do with the whole "uncanny valley" thing).

Japanese and its hot even close.

They have so many badass character designs ( especially from fighting games).

When I think of western designs, I think of generic, big muscle, bro gamer characters, like gears of war characters, Duke Nukem etc.

Japanese have had some bizarre and memorable character designs, just as long as they don't go overboard with the extremely weboo crap and over sexualized generic shit.

I know. That was a terrible movie. Still, it had plenty of female eye candy. But that's the only good thing I can say about it.

Depends. I found The Garden of Words somewhat inspirational, but didn't feel that way about 5 Centimetres Per Second, which was more of a downer. Still, I liked both movies.

I generally like both though slightly prefer Western design archetypes but enjoy Japanese games more.

I'm still hoping for a Tri-Ace game using these designs.

Sort of. Poland was originally part of the Eastern bloc throughout the Cold War era, but after abandoning Soviet-style communism after that, they eventually joined the EU in 2004 and became part of the Western bloc. So it was an Eastern country before 2004, but became a Western country after 2004.

A) those DOA pics not as detailed and look fake irl

B) can't ignore the fact that in a bunch of JRPGs the models look like prepubescent kids or teenagers in high school overly sexualized

Both are the same character, same girl, notice diff.

To say that this isn't reflective of Japanese design is not an understatement, but a flat-out lie.

To claim that is reflective of Japanese design is the flat-out lie. The only thing it might reflect is the tastes of a niche Otaku audience. And if anything, Hyperdimension Neptunia sold more in America than it did in Japan.

Proportionally, an anime females head such as this, is that of a small child's with elongated eyes.

@uninspiredcup: Well, the idea for anime's over size eyes are for expressing their emotions and reactions to the audience.

The current Ruby character was co-developed by AMD, Crytek and Illfonic

Illfonic is currently contracted for Star Citizen's FPS module.

Western companies like Disney (from USA) has exploited 3D anime style characters to generate mega $$$$$$$$$$$$ e.g. Frozen

The earliest commercial Japanese animation dates to 1917, and production of anime works in Japan has since continued to increase steadily. The characteristic anime art style emerged in the 1960s with the works of Osamu Tezuka and spread internationally in the late twentieth century, developing a large domestic and international audience. Anime is distributed theatrically, by television broadcasts, directly to home media, and over the internet. It is classified into numerous genres targeting diverse broad and niche audiences.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937 film)

OK, but point I'm making here is that dumb fanboys are (don't care to read last 2 pgs) purposely omitting certain aspects of Japanese design that we know is the majority. The following is an accurate general description of Japanese character video game design:

  • manga culture
  • bright
  • crazy
  • cartoonish

Obviously West don't like the above since U.S. gamers come from a more diverse entertainment background which directly contrast to manga culture.

Not sure what you mean there, but Japanese game character designs are far more diverse than US game character designs. Japanese game character designs can cover anything from the ultra-cartoony look of Pokemon to the ultra-realistic look of MGS. US game character designs don't have anywhere near as much range and diversity.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime

The success of The Walt Disney Company's 1937 feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs profoundly influenced many Japanese animators.

A common anime character design convention is exaggerated eye size. The animation of characters with large eyes in anime can be traced back to Osamu Tezuka, who was deeply influenced by such early animation characters as Betty Boop, who was drawn with disproportionately large eyes.

Neither does 30's Japanese animation.

In fact, this is what the first colored anime looks like:
