Character design: Western Vs. Japanese

You're saying this art style is good?

I'm a bigger fan of Japanese art design for the most part unless it's generic moe shit, so let's go with that.

Let's talk about good western character design now.

Why do you keep posting pictures of anime girls when this topic is about video games?

Not just that, anime and manga encompass so many different styles of character design within itself that using one example constantly is just ignorant.

What do you know, it's not actually "realistic" and isn't supposed to be. Were you too busy looking for something weird with her to notice the classic pointy nose?

I didn't post it because it was realistic, i posted it as an example of good art style.

Even realistic ones exaggerate facial features for more emotional impact.

Why does it have wiry straw hair? I mean you could sand paint off of concrete with that mop And its like the character designer thought 'this doesnt look female enough' so he put about 10 lbs PSI extra into its lips.

Anyways anime eyes have always bugged me, so I'll never like their designs more then the west

I find the actress/model/cosplayer on the left more attractive... but if they actually tried to make her look like that in the game, it would turn out horrible. Whenever game developers try to create "realistic" character models, it almost always turns out bad and rarely ever looks attractive (must have something to do with the whole "uncanny valley" thing).

Japanese and its hot even close.

They have so many badass character designs ( especially from fighting games).

When I think of western designs, I think of generic, big muscle, bro gamer characters, like gears of war characters, Duke Nukem etc.

I just prefer japanese character designs, however there are some amazing western artists too..

Japanese have had some bizarre and memorable character designs, just as long as they don't go overboard with the extremely weboo crap and over sexualized generic shit.

Well, his works're always on a melancholic side, but i find them inspirational more often than not.

I know. That was a terrible movie. Still, it had plenty of female eye candy. But that's the only good thing I can say about it.

Depends. I found The Garden of Words somewhat inspirational, but didn't feel that way about 5 Centimetres Per Second, which was more of a downer. Still, I liked both movies.

I generally like both though slightly prefer Western design archetypes but enjoy Japanese games more.

I'm still hoping for a Tri-Ace game using these designs.

Sort of. Poland was originally part of the Eastern bloc throughout the Cold War era, but after abandoning Soviet-style communism after that, they eventually joined the EU in 2004 and became part of the Western bloc. So it was an Eastern country before 2004, but became a Western country after 2004.

To claim that is reflective of Japanese design is the flat-out lie. The only thing it might reflect is the tastes of a niche Otaku audience. And if anything, Hyperdimension Neptunia sold more in America than it did in Japan.

Western. I like the rugged look, that doesn't look like perfection grown in a laboratory. I know there are japanese games that does not look like that, but many do.

Japanese. You realize that its not all about HUMAN characters. When it comes to human design, its preference. But everything else Japan pretty much wins.

Ironically, Frozen became the third highest-grossing movie of all time in Japan (behind Spirited Away and Titanic).

OK, but point I'm making here is that dumb fanboys are (don't care to read last 2 pgs) purposely omitting certain aspects of Japanese design that we know is the majority. The following is an accurate general description of Japanese character video game design:

• manga culture
• bright
• crazy
• cartoonish

Obviously West don't like the above since U.S. gamers come from a more diverse entertainment background which directly contrast to manga culture.

I enjoy both. I just love seeing interesting character design, altogether. I don't give a damn who, or what, it's made by.

Not sure what you mean there, but Japanese game character designs are far more diverse than US game character designs. Japanese game character designs can cover anything from the ultra-cartoony look of Pokemon to the ultra-realistic look of MGS. US game character designs don't have anywhere near as much range and diversity.
