I'm gunna have to go with Bioshock, everything was so incredibly perfect, the twist was so shocking and made me drop my controller and stare, I think it was the most well-crafted storyline so far this gen.

What do you think?

Duh...MGS4.

I doubt any game this gen wil surpass it, unless we're talking about MGS5 that is.

Erm, I don't mean to insult your opinion or anything, but how exactly was it spectacular? I thought the story was pretty boring, with the exception of the ending.

MGS4's story was so excellent (and to be honest made me tear up at the end) but some parts were so far out there, so ridiculous and to be frank; sometimes quite stupid. In saying that, I think Bioshock's story, overall, was better. Both top notch games with top notch stories, Bioshock just beats out MGS slightly with a believable, lively and thrilling story.

Did Bioshock even come out this year?

I thought it came out last year.

Anyway, for me it goes:

#1: GTA4

#2: Mass Effect

Followed very, very closely by

#3: MGS4

EDIT: I thought the title said "this year," not "this gen."

So my new list is BioShock as #1, everything else the same, they just move down one.

Oh yeah, true. I guess my main issue with Mass Effect, and most games now in fact, is the lack of character development.

I'm torn between Mass Effect and MGS4. I probably would have gone with MGS4 hands down, but the unnecessary retcons and explanations really messed with the conclusion for me.

I would have considered Bioshock, if not for its silent protagonist, and the badly implemented last third of the game.

I own MGS4 and thinks its a great game, but honestly, the story is SOOOOO overrated. Its a prime example of how quantity doesnt always equal quality. Just because theres so many cutscenes,, doesnt mean the content is that great.

Kojima rips ideas/characters from American movies shamelessly. Again, great game,,, but i found the stories for Uncharted and Heavenly Sword far more engaging.

You are the prime example of the player who understood zero from MGS4's story. By the end of ACT 2 you were probably already lost and never recovered. Don't worry, there are many like you ...sadly.

And comparing the story in Uncharted or Heavenly Sword to MGS4's is an insult to human intelligence.

You are the prime example of a pretentious dick who 'takes pride' in the fact that you seem to enjoy a diluted story while others (righfully so) call bullsh$t on it. What did I miss? the WAR IS BAD!! LIQUID IS EVIL!! SNAKE IS DYING!! SUNNY IS EFFIN WEIRD!! plot points that were rehashed a couple hundred times? If they took out the gamplay and made this story into a movie (changed character names/MGS brand) you call it garbage.

I loved MGS4, but the story is heavily overrated

lol, man you are dumber than i thought

well, enjoy your life, you must be happy....

MGS4,Mass Effect,Half Life 2 Ep2, Bio Shock, Persona 3, Hotel Dusk: Room 215. I would add Lost Odyssey to the list but once you reach disc. 2 the plot goes downhill and becomes just another cliched JRPG.

Did you even play mass Effect? That had absolutely nothing, nothing at all to do with the story. I don't even know where you're getting it from.

Humans were a very minor part.

The Reapers "destroy" the galaxy every cycle (something like 50,000 years) because by doing that they could control the progression of organic life. By wiping it out every once and a while they ensured that they wiped out organic life before they became powerful enough to pose a threat to the reapers (non-organic life.)

Humanity had nothing to do with it. Humans were pretty much the last of the organic species to start participating in the Council.

Dude, what you said isn't even a part of Mass Effect, it's a critique from someone who has never played the game. It has nothing to do with any part of the story. THat's like me saying MGS4's story sucked because Snake fighting against a bunch of robot monkeys to save Mars makes a bad story.

Mass Effect. The storyline of the first easily rivals any other this gen for writing and presentation, but what really puts it ahead is the promise of its sequels. Unlike other great stories this gen, it really has somewhere great to go.

I think people misstook Mass Effects deep universe for a good story line. In actuallity, the story line is pretty streightforward.

BioShock's is much more dynamic and muti-layered. There is not a single flat charater in that whole game.

I agree, the game just sucked as a whole. Some of the writing and ideas were so generic. Little sisters? Big Daddies? Not to mention the "choices" you made in the game only affected the final cutscene.

Well the whole choice thing was BS, i never felt good or bad EVER, on games like KOTOR, i felt like i was a saint when i saved a whole planet from slavery. Also, the audio logs just werent anything that kept you interesting, the story just didnt move, and everything that happens in it was bashed into our head by Ken Levine WELL before it released. In SS2, i started caring about everyone i was hearing, on Bioshock, i was listening to poor accents and sloppy writing. For example, Andrew Ryan's wife, i never felt like she had any substance, even though she has so much potential

But wow, dont get me started on the endings...

Mass Effect.

I would say MGS4, but....umm that story was ridiculous. Retcons are truly irritating.

Im just glad im not like those other pretentious MGS fans that believe they are deep or some form of higher beings for enjoying such crap.

*SPOILERS*
The world is being run by some AI programs built by the founder of The Patriots; after him and Big Boss (other member of the Patriots) decided to go separate ways after many disagreements. Then Solid Snake(Big Boss' clone, 1 of the 3 results of Les Efants Terribles) , being a patriot pawn, gets sent in to take down big Boss, which he does. Twice. But ,oh wait, lets fast forward to after Liquid and Solidus are both dead. Apparently Big Boss was rebuilt by Eva and Ocelot (Two other former members of the Patriots) using Liquid and Solidus' body parts! But he couldn't wake up because of some **** the Patriot's AI system "JD" had on him. Ocelot after getting his hand cut off decides to replace it with liquid. Unknown to Ocelot, liquid is able to take control of him because Ocelot's dad was a spirit medium :o :o :o NO WAI! But then after MGS2, He cuts liquids arm off and replaces it with a robotic one. Ocelot then undergoes gene therapy to make himself believe he is Liquid to fool the Patriots so they send in Solid snake to stop him. Ocelot wanted Big Boss to re-awaken, this if why he needed to fool the patriots into sending in Soid Snake, So he would stop him and destroy JD.
MGS4, this gen. it has its flaws, but there isn't anything better this gen.
