Fallout 3
I know it wasn't a bad gen for RPGs, but it was my least favorite.
I think Demons Souls pulled me in more than anything else. Still didn't compare to my favorites from previous gens though.
The Witcher 2 might just be the most overrated RPG of last gen. I played it and loved it but hermits like to pretend its the best RPG ever..
My top 3:
1. TESIV: Oblivion
2. Dragon Age Origins
3. TES V: Skyrim
^ Pc versions on all of them ofc
By and large, the Mass Effect trilogy. But also gotta give a shout out to Dragon Age Origins, Witcher 2, and Skyrim.
Provided that it's working, New Vegas destroys everything else.
Played maybe a year or 2 after release and was I the only one that didn't have issues? Had maybe 1 or 2 CTD's, but other than that nothing.
I don't think I had a single instance where I didn't CTD when I was playing for more than an hour.
@Cloud_imperium: aren't you the guy who posts pictures of black penises on here?
you have the same avatar.
Persona 4
This doesn't qualify.
I say Skyrim.
In order, it would be:
EDIT: Right, Dark Souls is technically an RPG too. For some reason, I always tend to think of it as its own thing in my head.
EDIT 2: Forgot Pokemon HG/SS is last generation too.
So my new list is:
Dragons Dogma
or
Demon/Dark Souls
or
Valkyria Chronicles (More of a tactical rpg)
or
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Honorable mention: ni no nuki, lost odyssey, witcher 2, tales of xilia, end of eternity

No

It's the only one that matters. :P
i'll go with the first Dragon Age for the 'most enjoyable' rpg of last gen. it was only a 'decent/average' rpg though. but it was totally fun to play. as far as just the best rpg of last gen though, flat out...i'd say The Witcher 2 as well.
you HAD to play The Witcher 2 like an rpg or you wouldn't have much success, at all. certain enemies just had to be taken out in certain ways. the other rpgs of last gen, not so much.

I have to concur with dragon's dogma and dark souls
To me
1. Dragon's dogma
2. dark souls
3. Skyrim
Dragon's dogma is simply the best rpg because the combat system seems to be the most satisfying, it's challenging but nothing as cruel as dark souls. The fantasy monsters/creatures are simply done the best of all the rpg that released last gen. Compare a dragon in skyrim with one in dragon's dogma, the difference is two gens apart. The world is also very well done, simply put, dragon's dogma has the best graphics and the best gameplay and it has a multiplayer component with the compagnions.
Dark souls is just so good because of it's pvp and the artwork. The graphics are also better than skyrim but skyrim is a living breathing world and it has a storyline(s), something dragon's dogma and dark souls doesn't have (or a lot less anyway). but I do prefer graphics, gameplay and multiplayer components over that but it's a split decision.
Honorable mentions: fallout 3 and new vegas, fable II.
Deus ex was not bad and i certainly prefer it over the witcher 2 or any witcher for that matter, simply because I think gameplay is a big factor, too much non action strategy is involved with the witcher
top 20 for me 20 final 13-2 19 final 13 18 amalur 17 dragon age origin 16 blue dragoon 15 dues ex xuman revolution 14 tales of xillia 2 13 oblivion 12 demon souls 11 lost odyssey 10 tales of vesperia 9 last story 8 fallout 3 7 dark souls 6 mass effect trilogy 5 the witcher 2 4 xenoblade 3 skyrim 2 valkyria chronicles 1 ni no kuni

It's no 90s (nothing will ever be), but i think it was a genuinely great time to be a RPG fan (2005-2012, if we're going by console generations). There was so much variety between games like Legend of Grimrock, Mount & Blade: Warband, Fallout: New Vegas, NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer and Demon Soul's/Dark Souls. Then there was Deus Ex: Human Revolution, The Witcher & The Witcher 2, the Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age Origins and Skyrim.
I've put over 30 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles, and i'm loving every second. As it stands, this one also deserves a spot on a top RPG list of the 7th generation. A lot of people loved The Last Story as well (i didn't, quite the contrary), then there was Pandora's Tower and Ni No Kuni : Wrath of the White Witch.
Lot of great RPGs last gens, hard to choose, but I would go:
1.Skyrim
2.Mass Effect 1
3. Dragon Age: Origins

Exactly. However, I think Dragon Age: Origins also forces you to consider different strategies to succeed in battle. But I agree that in most of other games, you unlock or pick ton of stuff but you save it for the difficult time. The next thing you see after that are credits and difficult time never appears.

exactly right lmao. i'm so sick of ending games with 20 or 30 "special" grenades or items and wondering, "why the **** was i saving these??" after its done. with the The Witcher i had to use everything...then go out hunting for more.

Yeah, the ultimate edition was pretty much hiccup free. Well, about as hiccup free as you can get in an open world RPG.
Demon's Souls or Dark Souls over Fallout New Vegas. The Souls games were just more satisfying because of the cool bosses, the combat, and the online stuff, and New Vegas was how I would like these western rpgs to be. All the system checks, and how many ways the overall game can change based on how you build your character and your decision making and how it impacts the factions, the world, and all that jazz. It completely outclasses the rest of the western rpgs that came out this past gen. The Witcher had cool choice/consequence aspects to its plot, but the overall game? the combat was shittier than shit (both times), and the writing in that franchise is fucking dreadful. Bethesda's work was like an all-star performance in snoresville. And Bioware's best game was a third person shooter (Mass Effect 2 and 3, shitty ending aside).
Jrpg wise beyond the souls games? The World Ends With You was legit and Persona 4 was a PS2 game. So yeah that genre sucked massive dick outside of those 3 exceptions. Tales was same ol tales, Tri-Ace's games weren't very good (although I need to go back to Resonance of Fate, I hear that's good), Eternal Sonata was okay at best, FF13 was supremely shit, and Lost Odyssey was neat and all (for like the opening disc), but it was such a derivative jrpg that got by on being a comfort food version of that genre.
Frankly while the RPG genre had some top end quality stuff through the gen, the overall output in that genre was pretty underwhelming. Luckily this new gen seems to be starting strong with Divinity, Wastleand 2, Legend of Grimrock 2, and allegedly Dragon Age: Inquisition is good.
Xenoblade Chronicles, I'm 50 hours in right now with no end in site, I'm doing all the side quests I can so I think the game will last me well over 200 hours. This game is a masterpiece, the music, scope, battle system, characters, story, environments are all mind blowing. I'd go as far to say it's the greatest RPG ever made.
In no particular order:
Great list.
