Best RPG of Last Gen?

During last generation of consoles, all platforms got some amazing RPGs (We missed cRPGs but gladly, that genre is coming back now). I played a lot of RPGs between 2005-2013 but some of them were really special and addicting. But The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is my most favorite.

The Witcher 2 is direct sequel to original Witcher that came out in 2007. I love both games almost equally (both have their own pros and cons) but I chose Witcher 2 because in my opinion, it is a better game (all things considered).

One of the most impressive features about the game apart from dark mature world with complex plot, stunning visuals, giant boss battles, great storytelling and politics, is that it features one of the best and believable protagonists.

Geralt of Rivia, the main protagonist feels like a human. He is neither good guy or a bad guy. He has is own personality and even though the decisions you make in the game have a huge impact over the storyline but the choices presented in front of you are NOT against Geralt's character. In other words, it is not about defining his character but choosing what story you want to see. And THAT is most impressive feature of the game in my opinion.

The Witcher 2 was released as PC Exclusive title back in 2011 and Gamespot gave it 9/10. Eurogamer claimed that nothing touches Witcher 2 when it comes to storytelling in their review.

Witcher 2 also got Enhanced Edition in 2012 that improved the game further and made it even better. Chapter 3 and endings were hugely improved. Chapter 3 was originally short and end of the game was a bit confusing for some people. So, apart from improving rest of the game they introduced new quests in Chapter 3, overhauled its lighting effects and also added new cutscenes to explain endings in a better way. The game also got outro that teased us what to expect from Witcher 3.

The game was also ported Xbox 360 after one year of PC release. Even though it is nowhere near as good as the PC version, it is still impressive that they somehow managed to run it on that hardware and if you own a Xbox 360 and don't a Gaming PC then there is no reason to not play it on your console.

I agree. The Witcher 2 is my favorite.

I'm probably gonna have to go with Dragon Age Origins. It was the closest to old Baldur's Gate ga,es and CRPGs of then.

Obviosuly, it also depends on the style.

Dark Souls was amazing in terms of ARPGs

Skyrim, specially thansk to mods, was fantastic has an RPG focused on open world exploration

Mass Effect when pulled into the whole trilogy was great aswell.

Deus Ex Human Revolution was also amazing, if you look at it has an RPG.

But i think i really have to go wtih DA:O has the best RPG experience of last gen

Mass Effect 2 was my favorite game of last gen. Even though Witcher 2 is technically more impressive than Mass Effect 2, I still preferred ME2 for some reason. But as RPG I prefer Witcher series over Mass Effect. So, yeah,,, Mass Effect is great, specially the second one, which is best in the series IMO.

Witcher 2 was an awesome game, but it was kinda small. I finished it in 30 hours.

Deus Ex Human Revolution (Does it count? I'm not really an RPG fan)

Provided that it's working, New Vegas destroys everything else.

Maybe Dragon Age: Origins comes close, but its story is painfully lackluster compared to its impressive cast of characters and detailed lore. M&B: Warband is also a contender, but it lacks polish in a big way (though its core is so beautifully tight). The Witcher 2 was great, but not as great as New Vegas since it was fairly focused while the combat was less impressive and character customization lacked any significant detail to call its RPG system deep. Haven't played Souls games, and I don't consider Persona 4 a last gen game. I personally loved Torchlight series, but it really isn't big enough to be the "best".

Only other game that I can think of are Pokemon HG/SS and B/W. Each have their ups and downs, so New Vegas is the overall winner for me. But frankly, Pokemon is like a whole new genre/category for me anyway.

p.s. Mass Effect series is probably my favourite series of last gen, but that doesn't make them a good RPG game in any way shape or form.

Yes it counts and it's an amazing game. In fact it's my 4th favorite RPG from last gen.

Have to say it was a 3 way tie for me with The Witcher 2, Skyrim and ME1.

And thats about it. Played mass effect 2 and 3. Didn't like them one bit.

Fallout New Vegas

The rest are all fighting for a distant 2nd. A true RPG in every sense, with a first person perspective. You can actually role play and stick to certain playstyles. And there are multiple ways to complete quests depending on your character type.

A real gem.

Not sure if it was the best RPG (If not it's close) but Lost Odyssey was definitely the best JRPG I played. That a sequel has not been made is proof that execs at MS don't know what they're doing.

It's a toss up between Persona 4 and Valkyria Chronicles. Both are masterpieces.

Dragon Age: Origins on PC, of course.

Played maybe a year or 2 after release and was I the only one that didn't have issues? Had maybe 1 or 2 CTD's, but other than that nothing.

My top 3 are the same as yours. Because they were the only RPGs I played last gen (also played KOTR but that was boring).

Yes, he is a Witcher but what I meant to say is, he feels a lot more human than other human characters in other games. Not to mention, Witchers are mutated humans.

I just meant it to be a joke....

Time to polish my skills further.

It's great. I liked it so much that the third one is the game I'm waiting for to make the next-gen plunge. My only real beef with it is I wish it had been longer. But when something leaves you wanting more that's probably a good thing.

Btw, it's one of the free games on X360 next month. :)

Lost Odyssey has been mentioned a few times in here and there's been no votes for FF13. Yet FF13 got 2 sequels and there's been nothing else for LO. The world can be messed up sometimes.

And for those that haven't played it and are just going by review scores the game is criminally underrated. In fact, of all the gen 7 games I've played it's the most underrated of all of them. Spencer, make LO2 happen.

Edit: So while I'm typing that somebody goes and votes for FF13, lol.
