so I was watching this porno, and this couple was banging in an arcade. while getting pounded, every once in a while the chick would make videogame references like 'the princess is in THIS castle! oh ya!' and 'you've got the high score!' all of this going on to the bleeps and bloops of the arcade scene in the background. it was just kind of annoying to me. you have all these fake nerds trying to be all retro and cool because somehow nerd culture has become absorbed into mainstream culture. they hit you with all these transparent game references to try and boost their geek-chic credibility. you start to see ths in a lot of movies and tv shows nowadays. I kinda resent the fact that videogames have been able to cross over..its comparative to how hipster culture became mainstream

A word of advice: don't think when you are fapping.

I can't help but wonder why you were watching a porno in that setting. Do you even desire gaming in your sex life?

Some games are accepted in society, nobody will make fun of someone playing on their phone, but if you tell someone you play World of Warcraft or Diablo 3 they will probably make fun of you.

Only World of Warcraft has been dumbed down so much. managing to attract a different audience entirely. The game is so different from 5 years ago. The same douchebags that used to bully me in middle school for playing are now getting into it. Probably because of how easy it is and how hip it's become to be into those kiind of games...

#14 Posted by TheEroica (13306 posts) -
Not one bit... When I was a kid with an Atari 2600 I wanted everyone to understand why gaming was fun... It's finally happening. Who am I to judge someone elses reason for gaming?
#15 Posted by BPoole96 (22784 posts) -
Nope. More people playing games means the quality standards are higher. Look at all the obscure trash that release on retro consoles that were essentially unplayable. We still see some of that today but quality control is much better nowadays.

Not at all.

Those games and things referenced in that porno have been "mainstream" since their conception...please, everyone knows what a high score is, everyone knows what the princess in another castle thing is, and plus, I dont consider mario to be a flagship of gaming, it's more like the tip of the iceberg...

What do annoys me is how people consider themselves true gamers, and you ask them what are their favorite games and they answer "mario, call of duty and guitar hero!"

Ok really, playing those games wont make you a gamer, I would say that not even a casual gamer.

Then there's the people who say "im such a gamer dude! i've played every single mario game released!" I ask them if they play something else and they say "uhm zelda, I love zelda too, played a lot of them, ocarina of time oh man masterpiece!".

I ask them "do you like ganondorf as a villain?" and they ask "GANONDORF? WHO IS GANONDORF?"

So they failed to recognize basic elements of a game with a basic plot..nope, you guys aint gamers.

that's what annoys me.

I'm more than happy to let mario be the "tip of the iceberg", it's like the wall where everyone shoots at.

Not at all. I remember at my old job in 1997, there was just one other guy who was into gaming. These days, there's a whole bunch of people at work into gaming. It's kind of nice that there's more people to chat to about it at work sometimes.

On top of that, more people gaming means more money for developers to keep making amazing games.

#23 Posted by illmatic87 (15157 posts) -
Nope. Im the opposite. I love how there are more of my friends that I can play games with these days.

I should have just stopped enjoying video games, and done something else, but nooooooo I had to buy more and more.

#28 Posted by Gue1 (9500 posts) -

games are worse now but the one to blame for that is the increment on development costs and things are only going to get worse by next-gen. Cookie cutter FPS everywhere....

I really don't, I think its great.

But I'm sorry you(TC), don't feel special anymore...

#30 Posted by -Unreal- (24536 posts) -

Only some games have gone "mainstream". By Mainstream I liken it to "socially acceptable". Those socially acceptable games tend to be sports games and games which involve mindless shooting and are very very well known even outside gaming circles.

#31 Posted by QQabitmoar (1969 posts) -

Casualisation, Political correctness and agendas taking priority over gameplay, nickel and diming with DLC, stupid fanbases and the whole LOL LE MEME LE VIDEOGAMES I'M SUCH A NERD XD culture.

I don't just despise the fact that gaming and the internet went mainstream, it feels me with SO MUCH RAGE that I can barely hold myself from breaking my monitor.

If anything I wish it was more mainstream. This hobby is so much fun and has gotten me through a lot of tough times in my life, being able to escape to a different world for any number of hours full of fun, memorable moments and pure entertainment above all.

If more people get to enjoy somethin I love to do, I'm all for it.
