3DMark: Trial of the fakeboys

In 1995, I built my first PC.

Back then, Ziff Davis handled most benchmarking software under their Winmarks system. It's now 2015 and 3dmarks are standard of the day.

I upgraded my PC of 4 years this past past week, and upon completion, I decided to look for some benchmarking software to see how things have changed in the past 20 years.

The advances of the internet have completely redefined traditional benchmarking in a way that now allows for the results of individual users to be archived, linked, and compared.

After viewing my results and noticing that they included an external link for sharing them, I realized that this may just be SW's answer to, "Your papers, please?" when a poster makes claim to hermitdom.

With that explanation aside, I encourage my fellow hermits to download and run the free 3dmark demo through steam:

You need , like, a $3000 PC to even get that running properly.

It also has: no games, pay for online, etc.

I'm not seeing the allure.

But it has games. And the paid online comes with free games every month. No charge. That's the brilliant part. You gotta see the allure in that.

Free games are still games which stop being "free" when you cease paying for online.

Maybe it's just me, but because it's overpriced and I don't like playing in a corporately controlled playground subject to their demands.

I dunno man, I have not heard much praise from cows for brilliant PC games like Don't Starve.

I mean. it's not a movie game, but it is, imo, one of the best games of recent years, but all I read from consolites were complaints about the difficulty and it not being "next-gen" enough for them; in spite of all of its innovative themes and gameplay options.

Yeah, Don't Starve is lovely. Same fellas got a new game out, you know? Invisible Inc.

Except PC gaming isn't about power, if you're trying to imply that. Graphics are just the icing on top. The hermits know this.

PC gaming is about choice, balance, mods and a shit ton of games first and foremost. For SWs purposes, sure, we argue the shit about everything.

I have an i5 and an overclocked GTX 750Ti which is more competent than you might think and I'm happy PC gaming. We shouldn't perpetuate this idea that people need a super powerful rig to enjoy themselves on the PC, when it's not really true anymore either. Gamers can get a lot out of something moderately powerful.

Yep, I bought it the minute it hit early access.

Yeah, I agree.

This is more of a means of resolving a seeming ongoing issue here at SW, that of the fakeboy.

3DMark provides the closest thing to "proof" of hermitdom given fakeboy accusations.

There's 0 shame in PC gaming on other hardware.

What matters is that people are PC gaming over console gaming regardless of the specs of their rigs.

Yeah, I just ran the suite of them, but I could definitely tell that Firestrike was the most intensive.

My gfx score on firestrike is ~22.000 on a single card.(take a guess which......)

295X or a Titan Z, I'm going with the 295X as the Titan Z is a ridiculous amount of money.

Going to go out on a limb and says it's still one of the best CPU's ever made, the fact that it's now 2015, four years after it released and still only about 15-18% slower in gaming applications than the 4790k has made it a joy to own. I want to upgrade my CPU, I really do, but nothing has really justified it yet.

Yep, built my machine in 2010 as well. And yep, I paid just over $1,000 for it, but god damn it was great for the time lol. It was overkill for gaming, but it was a god send for the 3d work I was doing.

Just download the demo from the Steam page, run it, and then run Firestrike 1.1

Idk. Maybe later. I really dont care about benchmarks though. Actual games are what matters.

My secondary rig (relegated to living room pc), a micro atx system with gigabyte mini itx 970s. Down clocked and down volted slightly to lower temps to below 70c on full load.

OT, but isn't that more a testament to Intel's complacency due to a lack of competition? If AMD hadn't bet on bulldozer or gotten their act together after that disastrous architecture, I bet we'd be seeing a hell of a lot more than a 15% speed increase over 4 years.
