GOP is circling the wagons around their King Trump, fighting a culture war that doesn't exist. CRT! Pronouns! Ummm...gays and baby killers!

Anyway, on to the good news: in the past few months, Democrats have tried to pass a slew of legislation designed to help Americans and make the world a better place. Their latest efforts, the Inflation Reduction Act, finally passed and intends to accomplish the following:

  • Reduce emissions by 40% by 2030.
  • Minimum corporate tax rate of 15%
  • 1% tax on stock buybacks
  • Fund IRS to collect on all owed taxes, especially corporate taxes.
  • Fund climate change proposals.
  • Improve "energy security".

Breakdown of the Inflation Reduction Act by, ummm....Slate? Ugh.

The Inflation Reduction Act:

1. Expands Medicare benefits: free vaccines (2023), $35/month insulin (2023) and caps out-of-pocket drug costs to an estimated $4,000 or less in 2024 and settling at $2,000 in 2025

2. Lowers energy bills: cuts energy bills by $500 to $1,000 per year

3. Makes historic climate investment: reduces carbon emissions by roughly 40% by 2030

4. Lowers health care costs: saves the average enrollee $800/year in the ACA marketplace, allows Medicare to negotiate 100 drugs over the next decade, and requires drug companies to rebate back price increases higher than inflation

5. Creates manufacturing jobs: more than $60 billion invested will create millions of new domestic clean manufacturing jobs

6. Invests in disadvantaged communities: cleaning up pollution and taking steps to reducing environmental injustice with $60 billion for environmental justice

7. Closes tax loopholes used by wealthy: a 15% corporate minimum tax, a 1% fee on stock buybacks and enhanced IRS enforcement 8. Protects families and small business making $400,000 or less

Link

Now, what's the cost of all this? $437 billion. That's a lot of money, I will admit. But how much will it bring in? $737 billion. Net reduction to deficit will be $300+ billion.

As they say...you gotta spend money to make money. Wish the GOP grasped that concept instead of just sitting on their asses, content to watch the fires burn.

But, let's keep this balanced by citing some possible negatives:

  • This might add to immediate inflation problems. Before we see any return, we will have to spend some money.
    • With that said, if we are going to bail out people, it might as well be the people of the USA and not the corporate banks as we did in 2008. Things are going to suck for the immediate future, might as well suffer for a purpose instead of suffering for the rich.
  • Some have said that these corporate taxes will force companies to trim their work force, adding hardship to families and increasing unemployment.
    • In my opinion I think that's bullshit; sorry, billionaires, you're going to have to take home 5 billion next year instead of 10. Poor babies. We should all suffer together in times of hardship and come through together, stronger.
  • While the IRS funds should help gain revenue, some fear it might go towards targeting poor families.
    • Yeah, that's nonsense. The folks that owe the most taxes will probably be targeted first, as they are the ones holding things up. Eat the rich! Om nom nom.
  • Some, specifically Bernie Sanders, have argued it is a bastardized version of the original proposal. And he is not wrong.
    • But, as they say, the best is the enemy of the good. It's progress, and we should take it. It lays groundwork for future proposals as well when it works.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

TL;DR: Democrats and others pass bill aimed to target inflation, help Americans, and combat climate change. There's plenty of speculation abound, but my personal thoughts are that you have to spend money to make money, and that America is not a place where we rest on our laurels, living in a world where simply being American somehow makes us immune to the crap in the world.

What do you think?

"The inflation reduction act" isn't going to reduce inflation. Economists agree nothing in it is going to lower inflation and several economists claim it will increase inflation in the short term as you stated TC. The numbers on a return in the future are shoddy at best.

Adding 87,000 IRS agents is not to go after the "1 %" don't be naive, the FED is about to go on a penny pinching spree with everyone working more than a part time job.

The omega rich can afford lawyers that can drag things out, they are not doubling the entire IRS to go after such a small portion of a small portion of people with resources to go to court over it indefinitely. 87,000 ****ing agents. They will be going after people getting paid under the table, working class people, middle class, upper middle

class. Them turbo taxes are going to get a fine toothed comb.

@firedrakes: I won't speak for the entire right.

But under Trump.

Passed $3.2 trillion in historic tax relief and reformed the tax code.

Signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act – the largest tax reform package in history.

More than 6 million American workers received wage increases, bonuses, and increased benefits thanks to the tax cuts.

A typical family of four earning $75,000 received an income tax cut of more than $2,000 – slashing their tax bill in half.

Doubled the standard deduction – making the first $24,000 earned by a married couple completely tax-free.

Doubled the child tax credit.

Virtually eliminated the unfair Estate Tax, or Death Tax.

Cut the business tax rate from 35 percent – the highest in the developed world – all the way down to 21 percent.

Small businesses can now deduct 20 percent of their business income.

Created nearly 9,000 Opportunity Zones where capital gains on long-term investments are taxed at zero.

Opportunity Zone designations have increased property values within them by 1.1 percent, creating an estimated $11 billion in wealth for the nearly half of Opportunity Zone residents who own their own home.

Opportunity Zones have attracted $75 billion in funds and driven $52 billion of new investment in economically distressed communities, creating at least 500,000 new jobs.

Approximately 1 million Americans will be lifted from poverty as a result of these new investments.

Private equity investments into businesses in Opportunity Zones were nearly 30 percent higher than investments into businesses in similar areas that were not designated Opportunity Zones.

Massive Deregulation

Ended the regulatory assault on American Businesses and Workers.

Instead of 2-for-1, we eliminated 8 old regulations for every 1 new regulation adopted.

Provided the average American household an extra $3,100 every year.

Reduced the direct cost of regulatory compliance by $50 billion, and will reduce costs by an additional $50 billion in FY 2020 alone.

Removed nearly 25,000 pages from the Federal Register – more than any other president. The previous administration added over 16,000 pages.

Established the Governors’ Initiative on Regulatory Innovation to reduce outdated regulations at the state, local, and tribal levels.

Signed an executive order to make it easier for businesses to offer retirement plans.

Signed two executive orders to increase transparency in Federal agencies and protect Americans and their small businesses from administrative abuse.

Modernized the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for the first time in over 40 years.

Reduced approval times for major infrastructure projects from 10 or more years down to 2 years or less.

Helped community banks by signing legislation that rolled back costly provisions of Dodd-Frank.

Established the White House Council on Eliminating Regulatory Barriers to Affordable Housing to bring down housing costs.

Removed regulations that threatened the development of a strong and stable internet.

Published a whole-of-government strategy focused on ensuring American leadership in automated vehicle technology.

Streamlined energy efficiency regulations for American families and businesses, including preserving affordable lightbulbs, enhancing the utility of showerheads, and enabling greater time savings with dishwashers.

Removed unnecessary regulations that restrict the seafood industry and impede job creation.

Modernized the Department of Agriculture’s biotechnology regulations to put America in the lead to develop new technologies.

Repealed the previous administration’s costly fuel economy regulations by finalizing the Safer Affordable Fuel Efficient (SAFE) Vehicles rule, which will make cars more affordable, and lower the price of new vehicles by an estimated $2,200.

Took strong actions to confront unfair trade practices and put America First.

Imposed tariffs on hundreds of billions worth of Chinese goods to protect American jobs and stop China’s abuses under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.

Directed an all-of-government effort to halt and punish efforts by the Communist Party of China to steal and profit from American innovations and intellectual property.

Approved tariffs on $1.8 billion in imports of washing machines and $8.5 billion in imports of solar panels.

Blocked illegal timber imports from Peru.

Historic support for American farmers.

Successfully negotiated more than 50 agreements with countries around the world to increase foreign market access and boost exports of American agriculture products, supporting more than 1 million American jobs.

Authorized $28 billion in aid for farmers who have been subjected to unfair trade practices – fully funded by the tariffs paid by China.

The amount of food stamps redeemed at farmers markets increased from $1.4 million in May 2020 to $1.75 million in September 2020 – a 50 percent increase over last year.

Rapidly deployed the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, which provided $30 billion in support to farmers and ranchers facing decreased prices and market disruption when COVID-19 impacted the food supply chain.

Authorized more than $6 billion for the Farmers to Families Food Box program, which delivered over 128 million boxes of locally sourced, produce, meat, and dairy products to charity and faith-based organizations nationwide.

it's just a list of things Trump did while in office that I liked, he did more than most to help the average Joe was talking to fire. Greatest president in my lifetime.

Inflation climate plan, that's hilarious. Joe Manchin screwed over the dems so hard, he got ALL his oil projects approved and THEN some. 40% reduction in emissions my ass, you really have to have your head far up your ass to believe that bs . Joe Manchins oil companies will just be selling that oil we reduced usage of to 3rd world countries where their emissions are going to go up by 100%. Those countries will be using that American madr oil and gasoline to sell us back cheap shit. Hurray for capitalism.

The only real thing this bill did was make it EASIER for oil and gas companies to get their permits to drill baby drill. No wonder oil and gas companies are happy with this bill.

The feds are just playing games, smoke and mirror bs. It's going to be up to individual states like Cali to step up. AS USUAL.

@sargentd Skimmed through that list and a good chunk of that happened in SPITE of Trump, not because of him.

Are we really gonna credit Trump for a Renewable Energy boom? seriously?

I really suggest you just pick your favorites in your copy paste, rather than the whole list, or put everything in bullet points so it doesnt clog up the thread.

Also, one of your xenophobic sources you copy paste seems to shirk the blame of COVID 19 away from Trump. But the fact of the matter is. Experts overwhelmingly agree that Trump's dismal handling of COVID 19 is one of the reasosn teh economy tanked so hard. The list also does not tell the complete picture on a lot of things and spins some of the bad stuff into positives by leaving out key information.

"Approved tariffs on $1.8 billion in imports of washing machines and $8.5 billion in imports of solar panels."

Are you SERIOUSLY trying to spin this into a positive?!?

Presidents have less power than you like to think they do. I would argue the legislative branch has more power as far as domestic affairs go. But one area where presidents have undeniable sway is in handling crises. And Trump's Crisis management was absolutely dismal.

Regarding some of his actual policies,

Trump Tax Cuts: Heavily increased economic stratification, and was poorly timed. Generally speaking, you want to spend while times are bad and save up when times are good, Trump literally did the opposite.

Trade War with China: This was arguably Trump's biggest failure, aside from COVID 19 handling. Presidents arguably have the most power in dictating trade policy. But Trump being the buffoon he is, squandered it terribly, went to a trade war with china. China found loopholes around it nearly instantly, and the american industry was left to suffer. And suffer they did, especially farming industries. The US lost the trade war, quite badly and the US absolute trade deficit is higher than it was prior to his entry into the white house. Arguably the highest in 30 years.

COVID Aid Hesistancy: This had a terrible effect. Trump was arguably the liability here.

Operation Warpspeed: This undeniably helped the US deal with the pandemic. And reduce economic damage and saved lives.

Operation Warpspeed: This undeniably helped the US deal with the pandemic. And reduce economic damage and saved lives.

So much wrong so sad, I find it funny you think the economy tanked cause of Trump, dude who was the idiot who locked down the ports in California, who was the guy who wanted to put strict movement throughout the country and have covid pass ports to go between states, who wanted....ooops who made it harder for oil companies to get permits which increased the price of gas here, who gave billions of dollars of our military equipment and weapons to the middle east OOPS can't wait for another needless war with them for the 3rd time in less than 40 years and don't get me started on basic rights Biden wants to remove from us "dur Trump man bad cause he tweets mean things". Meanwhile Biden can't even ride a god damn bicycle or have a day without looking like he belongs in a retirement home in Florida.

As for inflation and when times are "tough" NO YOU DON'T WANT TO SPEND SPEND. When you do that specially when there's I don't know a few extra thousands of dollars coming your way almost every month IT SKYROCKETS INFLATION AND INTERESTS specially when you have a system like in america where most stuff goes by your monthly income.

Oh and you also know what else contributes to inflation kid, when you have a 6 IQ Democratic party who closes one of the busiest ports, which no goods coming through = well I hope you realize that one on your own. When you make oil also harder to get which sky rockets gas, I'll tell you a secret when that happens....do you think those trucks who carry food and goods to stores run on Pelosi farts and Hunter Bidens drug addictions? yea if people think its costly to fill up that SUV with a "I cherish nature" on their plates just think how much it costs to fill one of those 18 wheelers. As someone who not only worked for the oil business and has worked with trade goods or farming stuff for most of my life, you literally got anything to do with the economy wrong alongside the oil issue.

If you think Biden did a better job than Trump during a crisis....lol god damn that is so damn wrong on sooooooo many issues kid. Remember when Korea was gonna start shit? yea it wasn't Biden who stopped that, if it was Killary she would've sent us to another needless war (again). Trump did a better job than Biden did with covid, hell if Biden had his way we would still be on lockdown and had Gestapo feds rounding up anyone who doesn't have the jab. Which is kinda funny cause he was against pushing the jab in that conference when he won. Oh and btw that BS talk about covid aid issue with Trump, that was actually from the fact all of those medical masks, medicine and sanitizer is made guess where (spoiler it's china), remember when he wanted to make more jobs here and not overseas? yea good times.

Lastly I love having a president who visits a town hit by a tornado, a moment when lives are lost and peoples hard work are ruined just to have that old fart go up to someone who's wearing a Packers jersey and gives that guy crap for Aaron Rodgers stand on not getting the jab. Meanwhile Biden not only did a horrible pullout job in the middle east giving them billions of our military weapons, you have the Ukraine/Russia issue, you have the Taiwan issue, you have China itching to start shit. Meanwhile under Trump they DIDN'T DO SQUAT cause they knew Trump was serious.

Another issue with Biden, oh lets have 87,000 more IRS agents cause like we need them all of a sudden? who the hell do you think is gonna pay for them? us in more ways than one. Our infrastructure is still dog shit cause we're spending money on stuff we don't need to (which to be honest this has been a issue for at least 20 years or more). The biggest fart in the room also comes into the fact Biden sent 40 billion dollars to Ukraine as well...It's like Demrats and people that think like them think you can just yolo print money without anything happening. Oh yea forgot they increase increased the tax rate as well...lovely

Basically TDLR for people who can't read, if Biden did a better job than Trump we wouldn't be in this dung hole that we're in atm.

Bro, Trump is still denying he lost. FROM HIS OWN MOUTH. The guy has convinced his base he won and actively tried to get new electoral votes cast for him.

What else do we expect from a conman that has declared bankruptcy multiple times, fined for racist business practices, defrauded people with his fake university, and had to shut down a charity due to fraud too!

@Ballroompirate: Where did I attribute the current economic situation to Trump? The inflation and current economy is an INTERNATIONAL issue and to blame it on any US president is incredibly foolish. And shows a strong lack of grasp for both political structures and economics.

As for the spending during inflation. If you look throughout history, you will see that spending to tackle the problem, has been an incredibly effective way of solving inflation issues. Which is why pretty much every expert say the exact same thing.

Trump got played by North Korea hard. And the credit for the peace did not come from Trump, but from peace activists in South Korea. Trump was the one who initiated the pulling out of Afghanistan in the first place. Now if you actually look at geopolitics, you will see that Authoritarian Regimes like China, expanded their empire massively during the trump administration. And Russia is currently banking on that Europe will elect trump-like candidates of their own.

Trump was seen as massively incompetent abroad (and in the US), and for a reason. And a fairly basic grasp of geopolitics would let you know why everyone is arming ukraine. While, I am too busy to provide you with a lesson, I suggest you play a grand strategy game like Stellaris or Hearts of Iron. And you can learn just how powerful soft power really is.

The delusion on the Trump cult is at stratospheric levels. N Korea was about to start shit and Trump saved the day? God damn, how clueless and drown in cult propaganda one must be.

Sending Iran right to Russian hands and freeing high level Taliban leadership was another genius move by Trump. He should get a Nobel peace prize.🤣

Shit like CRT get's proposed as an idea rarely at PTA meetings and it get's swatted down quickly by both sides. No one wants it.

As for the IRS, given how much uncollected tax revenue is out there, I think 87,000 employees is warranted. Would it be safe to assume you are libertarian? Genuinely curious what non-Trump loving libertarians think we should be doing. Sadly most libertarians have aligned with the far-right these days and the classic "socially liberal, fiscally conservative" libertarian is near extinct.

I think the knee-jerk reaction to fear is kind of silly. IRS don't raid you over $30 dollars. They send you a letter saying "Hey you owe us $30". Yeah it sucks giving up your money but then again we pay taxes in this country, so pay your taxes.

At least with this legislation we might see some good done with our taxes.

This is WHY we pay taxes. We can't continue to do nothing.

It exist in the classroom to as I've shown on thie board countless times. Labeling groups as oppressed and oppressors is what were talking about. Separating kids into said groups is what were talking about. No kid should be labeled as anything because of their skin color. Nobody is bitching about teaching about Civil rights and slavery. The reality is yes racism is real and it's wrong but it comes from all sides. A thing the left refuses to acknowledge .

Yet we're here because Democrats continued to push for more freedoms with abortion. I personally couldn't care less about this issue. The fact is if you want abortions most states will still allow it. So yes get a fucking grip. I'm sorry having to drive to another state is to much of an inconvenience.

Could have fooled me because powerful people in your party don't shut the **** up about it. You can tell me this is normal and ill never believe you. I don't need the VP's pronouns and what color suit she's wearing. It's a clown show.

I thought the same way you did. That it was just bullshit. Far left extremist that didn't hold any power. Until I saw powerful members of your party actually start parroting the same rhetoric that fat purple haired cat moms talked about at Antifa rallies. Then I started to worry. Then I noticed these same people started running companies and gaining power within corporate America despite running corporations into the ground. So no it's a little more then bullshit at this point.

Again you have to much faith in government. If they hire 87,000 people it us to screw us all. They didn't do it to just get the bad guys. How could they when most of those twats are donating to their campaigns.

This is the one thing you chose to provide any kind of evidence or citation for, so I decided to watch the linked horror for myself.

Spoiler for everyone else: The video is titled, "Kamala Harris lists pronouns and describes outfit before event, mocked on social media" and describes exactly that situation.

@mattbbpl: I honestly hadn't seen this thread until just now. And yes, I'm very happy to see this bill get passed. We have needed serious action be taken on climate change for decades now and this is by far the most we have ever spent on reducing our C02 emissions. It's a damn good day for the US and the world in general.

  • Few want to criminalize pronouns but, again, most don't really give a shit. It's just a hot topic and we all have to pick a side but I don't think you're really going to see Democrats caring that much for a small % of the vote. No one is going to fine you for saying he/him, you're just going to get yelled at by some purple-haired liberal and honestly someone is going to yell at you for something all the time.

I can.provide evidence for all if it but it won't matter.

The link shows her doing it which is cringe inducing. It would be funny if this wasn't becoming the normal way these social degenerates interact with each other.

Regardless this culture war bullshit is now a Law in Canada and California Democrats want something similar passed here.

It's funny to hear your party bitch about saving Democracy yet campaigning to put people in jail for shit your group made up 5 years ago.

As for CRT Eventhough you think it's a myth it It isn't.

Trump voters tune this stuff out, they think if liberals run things they'll make their kids gay.

This is true. It's shocking how little republican voters actually know about the on-goings in government because their selective "news" agencies like Fox pretty much never mention anything that isn't glowing for the party. I was just on another forum, and the various Trump supporters had no idea any of these numerous bills passed. When I explained it to them they simply rejected them all out of hand.

They build their own reality.

On the state-level Democrats are doing some cool things too. Hope it passes and doesnt die at the legislature.

Of course not. I'm wondering if this tax credit will encourage people to get cheap gas powered cars though.

Biden is signing the IRA today. Frankly I'm surprised he waited, but maybe there's some short term review process that I'm unaware of.

California has a lot of crazy stuff going on--not sure how well not owning a vehicle will go over, we don't have the infrastructure Europe has -- but at the same time a lot of good stuff, too.

Also, California is planning to manufacture insulin. Which is great, seeing as how the original patent for insulin was sold for one single dollar back in the day with the intent that manufacturers keep the price low (fun fact: they didn't).

Not sure how well this is known, but every single* pharmaceutical was paid for by the US government when it comes to R&D in the last 10 years.

*from what I've read. I'm sure there are exceptions.

Also in Kansas, they managed to preserve abortion rights. The Republicans just couldn't comprehend this so they did a recount, which is pointless since there was such a huge lead.

Democrats are even growing a spine, with comebacks to tactless hecklers. When addressing gun control and the Uvalde tragedy, Beto O'Rourke was laughed at and he quickly responded with "It might be funny to you mother f****** but it's not funny to me". Nice one, dude!

Things are also looking up culturally due to democrats and the democrat-aligned; Alex Jones and his company were recently fined 45+ million dollars. He is also facing trials in other states as well.

On top of that, as we all know, Trump's estate in Mar a Lago was also raided. While it's hard to think of the FBI as Democrat-aligned (they are one of the more conservative agencies in the US, historically and presently), it's nonetheless a good move and the right move to do. The FBI doesn't do things on a whim; they build and build and build a case against you, and if they made such an overt move, it's a sign of the end, not the beginning.

Nope, let's open it up to the state level.

This bill taxes the middles and lowers class, affects wages, lowers the US economy, costs jobs and enables Russia China and Iran. As I have posted before Progressive bills generate the opposite of their stated intent.

Sometimes just not doing anything is the right thing to do,

https://airwars.org/conflict-data/

Barely any airstrikes going on under Biden. Finally a president who values peace.

His links are Faux News, Newsmaga, Oan, etc. Wouldn't be surprised if he followed breitbart and jones either.

Nah, purely objective; they support what I support.

What about you? What do you like about the Republican party or whatever party you support? Objective answers only; don't want to hear about the non-existent culture war.

People over 400K income will be impacted, not under. IRS agents are not going to be kicking down your doors asking for that 50 dollars you forgot to pay.

Adds 15% corporate tax and 1% stock buyback tax.

That's not middle and lower.

@JimB said:

...affects wages...

In what respect?

Unrelated to the bill, we've had a huge migration of boomers out of the workforce, and power is finally in the hands of employees, not employers for the first time in a long time. Wages will go up. People have to keep on striking. Support your Starbucks, Amazon, etc. workers right to organize, strike, and lobby for better wages.

@JimB said:

...lowers the US economy...

There is concern that it will in the short term, but answer me this: isn't that going to happen anyway?

Gotta spend money to make money, dude. Democrats know this lesson, economy always does better under Democrats.

@JimB said:

...costs jobs ...

Literally creates jobs. Literally.

87,000 new IRS jobs.

Renewable energy is a gold rush just waiting to happen. Will create a lot of profit and a lot of jobs.

@JimB said:

...enables Russia China and Iran...

Bro, Trump (and the GOP) was doing that for years.

Iran is closer to having nuclear weapons now thanks to Trump than they have been for years.

In either case, I don't think any of them really needed any encouraging they've been rattling sabers for years.

@JimB said:

And that is great... for you. But, most of the country does not agree with the Biden agenda.

  1. I do not believe in higher taxes instead of lowering spending.
  2. I do not believe in income redistribution
  3. I do not believe that it is possible to create demand

So, let's address your talking points:

  • Reduce emissions by 40% by 2030.This is being achieved... how? By trying to force EVs on the market, when the market does not want them. And, there is a "horse with blinders" approach to the increase to the electric grid to fuel EVs, and the economic fall out from the shuttering of the fuel industry
  • Minimum corporate tax rate of 15% Again, try spending less first. Second, despite what people want to believe, we are in a truly global economy. Raising the corporate tax will entice companies to leave the US, or store money in foreign markets (like Apple).
  • 1% tax on stock buybacks. This is ludicrous. It's like an estate tax - taxing on things that have already been taxed.
  • Fund IRS to collect on all owed taxes, especially corporate taxes. Such a draconian idea - why does the IRS need more help? Because politicians are too cowardly to close the tax loopholes (they don't want to lose the votes). So, we the tax payers are going to have to front the bill to hire more agents?
  • Fund climate change proposals. What proposals?
  • Improve "energy security".The Biden administration is doing the opposite of this in order to appease a section of his base.

None of the points of this plan actually fix the current economic woes of the USA. In reality, it's a pork bill designed to raise taxes to fund pet projects.

First off - we'll see what happens in November to see which party the public supports.

Second, I didn't say anything about anyone supporting the GOP, I said "most of the country does not agree with the Biden agenda."

That's false. Most of the policies he proposed are popular with Americans, including Republicans.
