NYPost says Retailers  Abandon HD-DVD

Posted Mar 15th 2007 8:30PM by Ed Stasick
Filed under: Blu Ray

Has the curtain already fallen on the next-generation HD format war? After interviewing studio executives, polling industry analysts and reviewing the latest sales data, The NYPost has declared a victor: Blu-ray.

While we think it's a bit to early to call this one, Blu-ray is clearly gaining a bit of global momentum (thanks to the PS3). The full article is worth a read, but here's a hodge-podge of the story's best quotes, conveniently strung together and presented completely out-of-context:

"It's never been a question of if Blu-ray will pass HD DVD, but a matter of when. It's safe to buy Blu-ray players without fear they'll end up being sold as relics on eBay. Retailers will pull the plug on HD DVD sometime next year. "

Owning players for both formats, I don't really care who wins... though I do prefer Blu-ray's ability to play uncompressed PCM audio. That stuff sounds amazing!

As soon as the PS3 launched Blu-Ray has had the upperhand and it hasn't even been released in Europe yet.

Unless The guys behind HD-DVD have some miracles up their sleeves I cant see them making a come back.

Once the PS3 releases in Europe and Australia, the Blu-Ray sale will surpass even more.

Add in the fact that Star Wars will be an eventual Blu-Ray release (Lucas has endorsed Blu-Ray for years prior to its actual arrival) and Blu-Ray just has more heavy hitters.  In HD-DVD's defense it is still much to early to call this battle but Blu-Ray has the momentum now.

Im a strong believer in Blu-ray. Just its great library of movies is (I find) better than HD-DVD. Movies like 007: Casino Royale, Rocky Balboa (if you like the series), etc. It helps that Sony is in the movie industry themselves so great titles like Spider Man 3 will make their way to Blu-ray in the not so distant future. Not to say that HD-DVD is bad, its just that I think Blu-ray is the better format and it shows increasing potential as a top format.

I always thought blue - ray would win because of seasons and movie trilogies. Yet still can't find any so does anyone know if they're going to have season / movie trilogies in blue - ray? It would save a whole lot of space when you jam - pac it into the one disk, image that. Hopefully it can be done I hate switching and would love to have the whole thing on one disk. If not the episodes on one [disk] and the features on another [disk].

Its just that most BD studios use Uncompressed PCM tracks, while HD DVD uses Dolby TrueHD. Both formats can do both, but studios just choose differently.

Could this be the reason why the M$ fanboys hate us so much? The fact that their, "At least M$ is giving us a choice, Sony just needs to focus on games." Hello, they're a movie company too (Blu-Ray)! And a music company! (Singstar)
We don't complain that M$ is a software company and the fact that the excel in business software and internet (Live). It could just be that they're bitter. Had HD-DVD got the edge you could bet that they would be shoving that down our throat. Then too, the fact that Blu-Ray are used for games helps too, the format creators couldn't just count movies.

Bluray can be used for games, end of story bluray wins.

HD-DVD is pretty much only for movies, alot of big companies already love bluray because when they can back up pretty much an entire network of computers or presentations on one disc. the future is here and its playin b3yond :)

I don't really care who wins becuase I have both players (PS3 and 360 add-on). What doesn't make sense to me is why people think that a disc capable of holding 50gb on its dual layer format will be beaten by one that holds close to 30.

These discussions remind me about those mental basket cases who claimed Sony couldn't produce Blu-ray lasers.
Egads, I can't count the number of silly arguments where some moron grabbed upon a half baked article and proclaimed that Sony clearly couldn't makes lasers, or the Cell was horribly crippled...

Its not a sign of weakness to admit when something looks decent in a competitor you dislike.

I hate this crap period. Format wars are dumb. Hurry and get it finished so I can move up from DVD. Blu-Ray does have superior sound, but I kind of care more about picture quality where apparently HD-DVD has an advantage. Whoever wins though, it doesn't matter, I just want it done so I can buy a standardized format and not worry my friggin' eyes out.

I couldn't care, in like 6 years blue-ray will be replaced by halogram discs that hold over a terabyte. I'm still happy with DVDs and I'm scepticle of packing more information on a smaller space because of regular wear and tear by using discs. think about how easy it is to sratch and skip a dvd and then put 10 times the information in the same space.

You should really read up on bluray before commenting.  Bluray discs have a special tdk coating that almost makes them impossible to scratch through normal use.  Yes if you take a razor blade to one you can do some damage but they are extremely durable.

Dude , Blu-Ray is better than  HD-DVD , get over it , It offers alot more in the long run , The more you sit here and argue about it , it just sounds more and more like you actually bought the $199.99 HD-DVD player for your Xbox 360 and your trying to convince yourself that you didnt waste your money...DUDE , you wasted it!!! IT DOESNT EVEN PLAY HD-DVD GAMES!!!

blu-ray will most likely be the next standard. they are winning in sales and they have more support. it also costs roughly the same, if not cheaper to manufacture now. there are more drives/players/burners out there as well. and i don't see HD-DVD ever beating blu-ray in sales again, largely because of the PS3. ever since its launch, blu-ray sales have doubled that of HD-DVD. the only way i can see HD-DVD even competing, is if they lower their price of their players so they're considerably cheaper than blu-ray players.
