Upgrading from a WD Caviar Green to Black...

The newer Greens aren't too bad. You'd be much better off getting a small SSD for OS and programs.

There IS a difference on paper but not noticable. I have 2TB WD Green, quiet and fast! :)

Edit: Forgot to mention i use an ssd for boot drive.

I'm wondering if I'll notice any increase in performance from upgrading my green drive to a black? The greens are nice and quiet but really slowa, and I'm starting to regret using one in my build instead of a black. I'd rather not bother upgrading unless the difference will be noticeable.

I had a 500gb WD Green in a build I did a couple of years ago.  It was a hell of a lot slower than the WD Black 1TB that I have now.  My WD Black is about 2 years old.  I don't know if the newer Greens are a lot faster or not.  I tend to agree with the other posters who recommend getting an SSD for your OS and frequently used apps.  Keep the Green for your storage drive.

green isn't so much slower, its just designed to fall asleep when inactive, then wake up when needed. Its that wake up time that causes the slowness (kinda like if u had to to turn ur car engine baack on after the lights changed green at the traffic lights).

i have one black 7200rpm for OS and appplications (1tb, partitioned into 70-30%, smaller partition for OS), then a random collection of drives for backup and Adobe scratch disks. Some of hte extra drives are green models and u DEFININTELY hear the spin up and feel the lag when opening.

Get a 128g SSD instead. Keep your media on the green drive, but programs, games and apps on the SSD. Don't ever buy a spinning drive for your OS again. :)lhughey

the fastest SSDs are around 250GB

You will probably get faster booting, reduced load times and, better copy/paste performance. Depending on your habits, you might love it or barely notice a difference.

I recommend you to get a 120-240 GB SSD and use the Green for storage.

And as far as SSDs go..... Stability >>>>>> Speed.

Check reviews for you SSD of choice. Any well known brand will serve you well but you should aim for models with good stability. Pretty much any SSD will be an absolute pleasure, but some die sooner than others.

I'd love to recommend a Corsair product but beware of the Sandforce3 Chipset
