The newer Greens aren't too bad. You'd be much better off getting a small SSD for OS and programs.

There IS a difference on paper but not noticable. I have 2TB WD Green, quiet and fast! :)

Edit: Forgot to mention i use an ssd for boot drive.

I'm wondering if I'll notice any increase in performance from upgrading my green drive to a black? The greens are nice and quiet but really slowa, and I'm starting to regret using one in my build instead of a black. I'd rather not bother upgrading unless the difference will be noticeable.

Not quite.MonsieurX

Didn't think it'd be, just thought I should check before taking the plunge. Thanks for the input.

It'd be a worthy upgrade instead to get a SSD and get the green as storage

You will find me handy because I'm a Black WD owner. :)

I ran a speed test on my 4TB WD Black, and here's the results...

Run yours and see how that compares.

I had a 500gb WD Green in a build I did a couple of years ago.  It was a hell of a lot slower than the WD Black 1TB that I have now.  My WD Black is about 2 years old.  I don't know if the newer Greens are a lot faster or not.  I tend to agree with the other posters who recommend getting an SSD for your OS and frequently used apps.  Keep the Green for your storage drive.

Here are numbers from some Greens. They've both got a bit of data on them, so the numbers don't look quite as impressive as they once did.

Why would you 'upgrade' with hard drives?

Just add MOAR

You might notice some games that suffer from microstuttering like Fallout that you will limit that effect by getting a 7200rpm disk instead of that 5400rpm one. Just add a good 500-750Gb 7200rpm disk ( which should be dirt cheap ) and leave the green for storage . Heck i would even say go with SSD but then again you need at least a 240gb or more if you are a gamer and those thinks cost still alot

green isn't so much slower, its just designed to fall asleep when inactive, then wake up when needed. Its that wake up time that causes the slowness (kinda like if u had to to turn ur car engine baack on after the lights changed green at the traffic lights).

i have one black 7200rpm for OS and appplications (1tb, partitioned into 70-30%, smaller partition for OS), then a random collection of drives for backup and Adobe scratch disks. Some of hte extra drives are green models and u DEFININTELY hear the spin up and feel the lag when opening.

Get a 128g SSD instead. Keep your media on the green drive, but programs, games and apps on the SSD. Don't ever buy a spinning drive for your OS again. :)

just buy an ssd and install your windows and any programs that you use heavily. (not games) That will give you a massive boost in performance in boot time and loading of the programs, while still keeping your green drive in good use. If you install your most used programs on your SSD, like Steam, Skype, Chrome, Itunes, etc, and any programs that you like to boot on startup, your PC will seem much faster and more responsive.

Especially with 240-256GB SSD's being so affordable these days.

Thirded! 240 is about the min i woudl recommend. look for promotions and sales and you should be able to get a good deal on a decent drive. the performance boost will be worth the wait and the additional cost.

They're about 90-100% the performance of a traditional SSD, I suppose if your motherboard has an MSata connection and you don't like a lot of wires then I suppose they're kinda neat, not really worth the price premium for desktops in my opinion though.

You will probably get faster booting, reduced load times and, better copy/paste performance. Depending on your habits, you might love it or barely notice a difference.

I recommend you to get a 120-240 GB SSD and use the Green for storage.

Edit:

And as far as SSDs go..... Stability >>>>>> Speed.

Check reviews for you SSD of choice. Any well known brand will serve you well but you should aim for models with good stability. Pretty much any SSD will be an absolute pleasure, but some die sooner than others.

I'd love to recommend a Corsair product but beware of the Sandforce3 Chipset
