Just wondering, seeing that console games are usually rendered at 720p; Do some PC gamers still play @720p? And does it still looks good? I have a monitor with 1080p resolution but I'm about to get a PC soon and I'm just curious what if there are games that I can't run at 1080p that I'm inclined to lower the res. at 720p. What do you think? Still a good resolution?

well 1024P for me (1280X1024). its my monitors native res. i do want to get a new bigger monitor though (this is only 19") with a 1680X1050 native or something. i wouldnt like to go higer than that as i hate playing games at non native resolutions (they get all blurry and messy) and 1080P monitors need more grunt to run. i like my hardware to last. if you have a 1080P monitor then try running a game at a lower res and see if its OK. the monitor and/or graphics card may upscale it. it could be fine or it could look worse than a 720P native monitor. personally though i always prefer to run native on LCD screens..even if that means cutting back a bit on the settings. with a CRT id drop the res and get on with it but not an LCD.

Well, the difference between 1920x1080 to 1280x720 is COMPLETELY HUGE. I already see a lot of difference between 1280x720 and my monitor's 1280x1024 max. No offense, but 1280x720 is pretty low... I still can't believe that consoles still only run in 720...

I play at 1680x1050 and it looks stunning, 1080p isn't that much better, imo.

Running lower than your monitor's native resolution will always make it look worse. I personally say try it and see what you think of it, not like it'll hurt any to try out lowering your resolution to play games.

I play at 720p. Between this and my friends 1080p monitor there isnt much of a difference. It does get a little blurry sometimes, but you never really notice it.

I play on a mere 19 inch monitor at 1440x900. It's a great monitor, but I want a 22-23 inch monitor that's at a higher res. 19 inches is getting too small.

Love my 19 inch and a 32 inch phillips. No need or a want for more. I feel 22 is to big for a desktop and my 32 inch is nice as is connected to my computer in my living room. They do the job nicely. 1440x900 and 1366x768 for me. Never been a big fan of 1080p and still not one now. 720p has done me fine for years and still does.

Uh that is unscaled. Console games are usually not even rendered in HD. They are just unscaled, as in stretched. So no, sorry.

I always play minimum 1680x1050 (one step below 1080) and usually 1920x1200 (1080 equivalent on a PC monitor). Anything less than that and I know its time to upgrade my hardware, because at that point it is console quality visuals. I play most of my stuff on the PC because it looks so much better than anything else available. Case in point I bought ME2 on the XBox so I could carry over my character, traded it in the same day for the PC version because it was upconverted 720p and the jaggies, resolution, textures, and lighting/shadows were horrendous compared to the PC version.

I feel the same way about FSAA, I'm almost to the point where if a game doesn't have the option, I'm not buying it. Jaggies are impossible for me to ignore and they drive me insane. IMO this day in age everything should come with FSAA compatibility through the game or driver... I'm looking at you Unreal 3 engine...

If that is PC elitism so be it. I expect good visuals when I'm playing a game and you simply don't get that below 1680x1050, with FSAA and Aniso.

EDIT: As to the above, it is correct that all console games run natively at 720p and are upconverted to 1080, the current hardware does not have the horsepower to render visuals at 1080p.

I haven't played at 720p since the late 90's. By the early 2000's I was gaming at 1680x1050, and finally recently went up to 1080p

It's a huge difference for me.

This is the difference and it is a lot more noticeable in motion.

It's worse when objects are further away.

Depends on the size of the monitor/tv and how far you sit from it. Personally I couldn't stand below 1600x1200 since the year 2000, especially when I got a 22" diamondtron crt in 2003. When I had to lower the res below that it was time for an upgrade.

CRT monitors don't experience the same ugly problems as LCD monitor due with non-native resolutions.

I play at 1680 X 1050.. On my tv I do play 720p.. I do not like 1080p.. I do not notice a differecne between teh 16x10 resolution.. And it only drags down performance more.. In fact 720p is perfeclty fine to me as well when there is AA and what not..

Got 2 monitors, one is 1680x1050 and the other is 1280x1024. I use both for different games. I try to respect the native resolution of the games, most old games doesn't looks good on my 16:10.

Resolution is not as big of a deal as settings. Playing at 1680x1050 on low is trash compared to max at 1280x720.

really? personally i play my games at 1440x900 and I had no problems

It's easier on my eyes when I'm 5 feet away from a 32" TV than the 1-1.5 ft when using a 19" monitor.

I'm fine with 768p with all details maxed out:

ah, I didn't understand that you mean connecting it to a TV, sorry about that, my bad.

I sometimes connect my PC to my 1080p TV, the problem is that I mostly play RPG's and strategy games on the PC meaning I rarely do it because I can't play with a mouse and keyboard outside of a desk.

And these types of games are usually not very compatible with a controller

I doubt most console games are usually rendered at 720p because most of them I've played don't seem like it.

That's why I have a wireless mouse and keyboard. They're on a cheap, old, and spare coffee table and me sitting on the carpet leaning on the couch. The joystick I use for flight sims is wired. But, the cord is long enough to reach the USB ports at the back of the PC.

I plan to buy a 360 controller for the PC so I can play Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. But, I want to finish Bioshock first. I bought it before Crysis Maximum Edition and I've already replayed Crysis and Warhead 4 times apiece while Bioshock had sat idle. He He.

[QUOTE="blangenakker"]i play game 1440X1900 but most of the time i have to put them down to 1024X768topsemag55

1920 x 1080 LCD monitor, but I game at lower resolutions, as the menus and text just look stretched to me...not appealing at all.

only reason why i lower it done is so certain games can run faster ot atleast most games

ah, I didn't understand that you mean connecting it to a TV, sorry about that, my bad.

I sometimes connect my PC to my 1080p TV, the problem is that I mostly play RPG's and strategy games on the PC meaning I rarely do it because I can't play with a mouse and keyboard outside of a desk.

And these types of games are usually not very compatible with a controller

That's why I have a wireless mouse and keyboard. They're on a cheap, old, and spare coffee table and me sitting on the carpet leaning on the couch. The joystick I use for flight sims is wired. But, the cord is long enough to reach the USB ports at the back of the PC.

I plan to buy a 360 controller for the PC so I can play Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. But, I want to finish Bioshock first. I bought it before Crysis Maximum Edition and I've already replayed Crysis and Warhead 4 times apiece while Bioshock had sat idle. He He.

In my case I have all my stuff in my room, so it doesn't feel right putting the keayboard and mouse on my bed, everything feels squishy
