Geez you guys are clueless. "Socialism" is seen as a bad thing because of branding. The politicians against it did a good job branding socialism as a negative thing in the US. However, socialist policies are running rampant. We just don't call it by its true name.
Pretty much this. I also don't think many Americans are able to differentiate between socialism and communism, the latter being a totalitarian form of governing.
Seriously now...
If what you're saying is true, it'd in a sense mean that some people in the U.S would like to take the country further away from capitalism but they just can't which in turn would suggest that the American population is in a severe antagonism with socialism, something I can't get my head around, especially in the U.S where income inequality is astronomical.
