Geez you guys are clueless. "Socialism" is seen as a bad thing because of branding. The politicians against it did a good job branding socialism as a negative thing in the US. However, socialist policies are running rampant. We just don't call it by its true name.

Pretty much this. I also don't think many Americans are able to differentiate between socialism and communism, the latter being a totalitarian form of governing.

Seriously now...

If what you're saying is true, it'd in a sense mean that some people in the U.S would like to take the country further away from capitalism but they just can't which in turn would suggest that the American population is in a severe antagonism with socialism, something I can't get my head around, especially in the U.S where income inequality is astronomical.

lol free... you really think its free? kids do get "free"schooling here or parents can choose a private school.

either way this is why tax around eroupe can be up to 45%

45? no way!

15,600–23,200 euros 6.5%

23,200–37,800 euros 17.5%

37,800–68,200 euros 21.5%

68,200- euros 30.0%

30% is max.

For example, 5600 euros(7594 us dollars)(month) - 21.5% tax.

What tax is in usa?

The highest tax bracket in the U.S. is 39.6%. We also pay state income tax, with a few exceptions like Texas, Florida, Nevada (I believe), and many pay a county/city income tax. The State and Local income taxes are a much smaller percentage.

The tax law here is quite complicated. You can deduct your state and local taxes from your federal income tax burden, for example, and some types of income, capital gains (profit from the sale of stocks) and dividends, are taxed at a 15% - 20% rate, again depending on your total taxable income.

According to Wikipedia:

Marginal Tax Rate[8]SingleMarried Filing Jointly or Qualified Widow(er)Married Filing SeparatelyHead of Household[9]
10%up to $8,925up to $17,850up to $8,925up to $12,750
15%$8,925 to $36,250$17,850 to $72,500$8,925 to $36,250$12,750 to $48,600

39.6%$400,000+$450,000+$225,000+$425,000+

Yeah, most people in those high tax brackets don't actually end up paying that much

The United States doesn't know how to spend money.

How much money they put in something? In here more than 50% nation budget goes to social section.

The United State's occupies over 100 countries in a military capacity. Were the only country in the world that's EVERYWHERE. Then add in the money it takes to keep these bases running.

Do the math.

Crazy.

In short my country. Humane is most important thing. if poor people can´t get free univitry, health or money from goverment, then it´s just not human and curel. i cant undestand how it works in usa

What country do you live in?

I've been watching some lectures lately of a course offered by Yale called "Capitalism: success, failure and reform". One particular aspect that got my attention is just how dominated by capitalist ideas the professor comes off most of the time. Its like he takes pleasure and relish in talking about corporate America and the admittedly grotesque abominations it spawns into the world. It kind of makes me sick to my stomach actually, I find nothing fascinating about it. On the contrary, I find it to be worth of nothing but contempt. As a part of the syllabus, he was instructed to allocate a lecture to talk about Karl Marx. It was a complete joke. He was so hesitant and indecisive as if he was committing a crime. His "critique" was so shallow and trivial, unfitting for an economist teaching in one of the best universities in the world.

Much of the american public is still suffering from Red Scare, even those who werent around to see the cold war. Communism is hailed as the end of civilization (even though no country on the planet has ever achieved actual communism) and socialism is said to be scary and evil, even though socialist policies are often welcomed, they just arent labeled as such. People have knee jerk reactions to words they were told the wrong definitions of.

I think both America and Europe are mixed economics, but Europe just leans more to Socialism than the US does. Yes we do pay more taxes, but it's nice to be able receive medical treatment without the potential of a huge bill at the end. It's also nice to be able to get a college degree without having a mountain of debt on my shoulders afterwards.

Socialism stifles human awesomeness. What's the point in making new discoveries and bettering the world if everything is being handed to me?

Capitalism is the best form of governance ever seen in all of Earth's history.

It is kind of typical for Americans to equate incompetent bureaucracy with socialism, especially in the 21 century.

The truth is redistributing wealth has not always been controversial in America. It was incredibly popular during the 20's and 30's, which lead to the New Deal, and things were good for a few decades. When things started to get a little rocky again, around 1979, instead of New Deal 2.0, Americans got the idea in their heads that giving the most amount of benefits to the richest people will somehow help everyone below (lol), which brings us to the current economic state of America.

I doubt that. What percentage of those Europeans that are old enough to have earned a degree have a degree? I'd bet everything I have that it's not 100%, it's no guarantee.

Well people who may be old to get a degree may not want a degree so it's meaningless to answer that. As for the second part of your post. It's not 100%, but you're far more likely to have a clean slate out of college in most European countries than you are in the US.

I see the "nothing is free" shit argument is being reiterated and rehashed in this topic, can't say I'm surprised.

If you want to be pedantic and argue about semantics, fine I'll entertain your logic. If the free public services and higher standards of living people enjoy in socialist countries are essentially not free and are paid for by someone, and given the economic and taxation systems of socialist countries, it stands to reason to say that things you get in socialism are paid for by everyone who benefits of them in proportions to his/her ability. That means the rich contribute more to the general affluence of the people and to their well being which in turn means that socialist countries enjoy a more just system of distributive justice. Can't see how this is a bad thing.

I'm not saying socialism is perfect, I'm sure its riddled with pitfalls and in need of reform. But its foundation remains to be superiorly humane and moral compared to capitalism as practiced in today's world. I'd still pick a socialist country over a capitalist democracy like the U.S any day of the week. Its not even a topic of discussion for me.

The economies of western Europe are overwhelmingly based on capitalism. Redistributive policies related to spending the taxpayers' money differ in some areas which many confused people call socialism. The actual portion of the economy that can be described as socialist is very small. Even healthcare in many countries may appear to be socialist because of the one payer system, but much of the actual services are contracted to the private sector (varies a lot by country).

Socialism has become a watered down term meaning very little these days. There are basically no real socialist countries in the developed nations. For example, the economy of Sweden is 90% privately owned/run.

The point being that the taxes that are raised are entirely dependent upon the economy being capitalistic in the first place. Without that economy the gov't would not have the money to redistribute.

You wannabe socialists do not even know what socialism is and you will claim any social welfare policy as socialism without understanding the economics at all. The so called Welfare State exists only in capitalist countries.

Horrible countries? Worlds best health care and education system in the world.

Also worlds least corrupt nations in the world,Same thing with press free one of the best in the world. Also worlds happiest countries in the world. Yeah right. You can google those things and you find proof over there too.

Best health care, best education, least corrupt, press free and happiest countries. We care about people who live in our country but you don´t. Thats why we winning, not you. Socialism works very well(mixed). The richer you are, the more taxes you pay = everyone happy.

Socialism is evil because it goes against the teachings of Jesus.

How so? Didn't Jesus say, "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's"?

Sarcasm does not work well in writing, unfortunately.

I believe Americans and non-Americans have a vastly different view of what socialism is.

Americans fear socialism. They think Socialism is bad thing. They think if people take care of other people then it´s wrong thing to do.

Non-americans think that Socialism is not communism but mixed socialism with capitalism. We have capitalism economic but with socialism, big taxes. Who earns more, pays more. Results? = More happy people, very good health care, education, no poor people.

In USA people think that big taxes are bad thing. Americans think that everyone should take care only of themselves and not care about others.

When Americans sees other people as competition, then i and we think other people are just like us, colleague.

Socialism is not bad and Socialism is not communism.

Rofl, in reality European countries have more regressive tax systems than the U.S.

My bad, sarcasm is especially difficult to convey in text because it's so tonal in nature in speech.

And? How thats a bad thing?

A)Big taxes but more happy people, worlds best and free health care, free and best education, least corruption, biggest PRESS freedom.

B)Lower taxes but unhappy people, not good and paid health care, bad eduction, big corruption and no press freedom.

Again, how big taxes are bad thing??? Clearly, americans fear socialism and big taxes. This is why Europe is winning and USA is losing.

Come to Noway, Sweden or Finland and then you have it. I was suprised when i heard what is in USA. How this ever happened in USA

Neither Norway, Sweden or Finland is Socialist. And they are horrible countries.

Health

Education

Happiest countries? Happiness is something very subjective. In Scandinavia you are thought not to complain and hide your emotions.

And

Do you even know where I am from moron?

Fennoscandinavia is not Socialist. If Socialism works well don't use it as proof cause it is capitalist. And in the US you also pay more taxes the richer you are.
