This is certainly a strong contender. I love that bird.

The cassowary will always be up there. It makes sounds like this. It has a spike claw on each foot that it can rip shit up with. You stare at it and it stares right back. It's about as tall as an average man but can run much faster. They say it's able to slash through car doors. It mostly eats fruit.

Power, size and beauty will make most birds strong contenders. Now for me intelligence is crucial and crows are brilliant! Example

The crow or raven. Their intelligence is unmatched among avian creatures. Crows have shown tool use.

The Hummingbirds. I find Hummingbirds to be one of the most interesting birds out there. There wings flap at high frequencies audible to humans. They hover in mid-air at rapid wing flapping rates, typically around 50 times per second, but possibly as high as 200 times per second, allowing them also to fly at speeds exceeding 15 m/s (54 km/h; 34 mph), backwards or upside down. Hummingbirds have the highest Metabolism and they are the best birds. [For me]

Jim Halpert:Question. What kind of bear is best?
Dwight Schrute:That's a ridiculous question.
Jim Halpert:False. Black bear.
Dwight Schrute:That's debatable. There are basically two schools of thought--
Jim Halpert:Fact. Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
Dwight Schrute:Bears do not... What is going on?! What are you doing?!

Seriously underappreciated birds. Personally I find them elegant, mysterious and solemn. I guess they're too much for most people to appreciate.

Hawks....and yes, basically Eagles are large hawks (family Accipitridae).

Most all of the raptors (Birds of Prey) are interesting, hawks, falcons, eagles, ospreys, and owls, although not sure if I care much for vultures, who are also in this group. Some condors are damn big though!

I really love hawks and eagles, and I think the hummingbird are adorable, then you have all the birds who can imitate speech, but since I live in a place with so many ravens and crows I have to go with them.

It's quite a unique experience to walk in a field with thousands upon thousands of them. I still remember the first time I did that....At first they really didn't give a damn about me and they were just doing their own thing, then all of a sudden every single crow looked at me at the same time like a hive-mind; they turned their heads sideways, studying me, then instead of flying away they started walking toward me and before I knew it there was a cloud of black walking all around me. That's when the ravens decided "this might be worth our time, let's check it out "and just flew between me and the crows and then it got really loud, really fast...at this point I may or may not have started to have some Hitchcock-induced flashbacks and be close to shitting my pants but running probably wouldn't have been a good idea...anywhere I looked -ground, trees, anywhere- was full of crows and these huge-ass ravens standing at my feet (some of them literally ON my feet) just chattering away at each other so I slowly started walking through the crows and none of them acted hostile in any way but they wouldn't take their eyes off me either so after 2 or 3 minutes of "walking on eggshells" I finally got the hell out of there =P The ravens actually followed me for another couple of minutes before deciding I wasn't about to do anything interesting.

It was scary but now I actually do it for fun since they're quite friendly. Only incident I ever had with them was one time I was walking home while eating a sandwich and it broke off and half of it fell on the floor...when I saw a cloud of them furiously flying towards the food I got the hell out of there but they chased me so I had to throw the rest of the sandwich away because they were actually flying at me and pecking on it...none of them tried to hurt me but I wasn't going to risk it...that has happened once with a bunch of seagulls too but the seagulls don't give a crap if they're snapping at the bread or your fingers...crows are a bit more precise =P

@korvus: My word, that was really interesting Korvus. Crows/Ravens are said to be the most intelligent birds around so u would assume they are studying Human behavior is my best guess. I do get a few Crws from where I live but they do take an interest in Human activities.

By the way, the way you describe your encounter with the Crows almost reminds me of an old movie about Birds attacking Humans lol.

Sparrow

I once saw a hawk in its natural inhabitant. That must have been the largest most beautiful bird I've ever seen (aside from Peacock) but as for the overall best bird I have to say sparrow. No other bird inspires you as much as sparrow does as it starts it's search for life first thing in the morning and stays energetic all day long. Every time I hear a sparrow's chirp I'm reassured that life in it's truest meaning still exists.
