It's like someone dropped the script and then couldn't retrieve all the pages. Also, there was plenty of awkward and meaningless scenes. I didn't like the plot. And the worst thing.......... there wasn't enough Faora-Ul !!!

You know, if you're going to make a thread about a giant plot hole in a movie, you should probably say what said plot hole was.

To the best of my knowledge there really isn't one. There are a lot of negative things you can say about Man of Steel, but an inconsistent plot isn't really one of them.

The sequel should be cancelled and Snyder should retire because MoS can't be topped. It's the most spectacular movie ever made - and it has a good story and good characters too.

I think what you are referring to as plotholes would probably best be suited as goofs or changes to personal expectations from a Superman movie, which is understandable coming from Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan. It's called the Nolan-verse for obvious reasons with his Dark Night trilogy; we can only expect the same from Man of Steel.

then what was the plot hole you were referring to? Bland, awkward, and meaningless scenes do not a plot hole make.

Those were just extra issues. Plot holes are like How did Jor-el become an AI with conscious and feelings ? And How did the AI reach that ship in North Pole, Since Krypton was destroyed along with its colonies ? Where did that Superman costume come from ? What is it doing in a ship that was stuck in the ice long before Kal-el was born ? Why is the size so perfect for him? And How did Kal know about the ship in the first place ? When he snatched Zod away from his mother, did he not think what the others might do to her that they now know she is his mother ? They told him he needs the Earth's atmosphere to use his power yet he can fight and fly in space, how so ? Why do Kryptonians speak English ?

I had a few gripes with the movie.
Who the hell stays in the city with that terraforming machine. I don't understand why people were even in that musuem after that much destruction in the city.Everyone should do like Forest and run

Why didnt Zod just go to mars to re-populate Krypton, or even the other planets, why was he adamant on Earth? All Zod had to do was capture Kal El, go off to some planet, extract the codex from his body. I mean this is the 5-Star General of the Krpyton army, he would know how to subdue Kal El

Why didnt the people about to be lasered by Zod just go underneath the laser, and then Ka-El could have held Zod's head in position

Doesnt that police officer that escorted Lois Lane now  know that Clarke Kent is Superman

Why didnt Pa Kent just stay in the car for a better chance at survival, and the gusts from the tornado would have picked him up meters before the tornado actually got to them

If all of those Krpytonian colonies were dependant on Krpyton, how come Zod forces and Kal-El are not

If the Krpytonian knew that they had the power/tech to repopulate Krpyton, why didnt they attempt a last minute effort before the destruction
I don't think any of those qualify as plot holes. Simply being unexplained does not a plothole make.

Indeed. Again, I agree that the script is fairly weak, but plotholes aren't really the problem.

Jor-El was an AI because Krypton is more than 100 thousand years more advanced than us. And it didn't have feelings, but Zod sure hoped it did.

The AI was stored in Superman's USB.

The costume has the logo of the House of El, who are the scientists of Krypton.

The size might be perfect because alien materials adjust to the wearer, as seen in the helmets and the general trend of having perfect fitting clothes.

Just because they don't show exactly how Kal went Jason Bourne on the military doesn't mean it's a plot hole. It's an omission and you're free to make up your own reasons. In other words, think a bit instead of waiting to be spoonfed and then bitching when it doesn't happen. I'll just assume he used his super vision and hearing to spy on the military, hoping to hear about UFOs. Or he had a map in his own ship!

Zod's team knew she was his mother because they read his and Lois' minds on the ship.

He needs the Sun to use his powers. Krypton's gravity and atmosphere were affecting him in the ship just like Earth's gravity and atmosphere affected him as baby, as explained by Ma Kent. They can chill in the void because of the Sun's unfiltered influence - you see Zod and the rest using space suits in the flashbacks.

The Kryptonians speak English and every other language because, again, they're 100k years ahead of us. The message is initially non-sensical but it only takes a couple of second to fix it.

I had a few gripes with the movie.
Who the hell stays in the city with that terraforming machine. I don't understand why people were even in that musuem after that much destruction in the city.Everyone should do like Forest and run
Since this is a plot thread, I'm not going to spoil the answers.

Metropolis wa sunder attack for only a couple of hours at most. Was NY evacuated on 9/11? It's impossible.

Kal-El was an abomination who loved the impure and lesser humanity. The humans are ants and Zod is going to step on their anthill just to spite Kal-El.

The people about to be lasered are scared shitless and while Zod's eyes can't go further to the right because of the headlock, he can damn well keep moving them left, up and down.

Yup, the police officer might know. The Smallville priest knows for sure.

He tries to go away. When he can't, he signals Kal to do nothing and is swiped by the wind 10 seconds later. Not that being in a car helps much.

The colonies need the Codex to create new members and Krypton's unique minerals. They are also brainwashed. They all have one role only and when Krypton died the colonists were hopeless. Zod has scientists in the crew, salvages a World Engine and hopes to rebuild Krypton's civlization. Technically, he's the good guy lol.

The whole point of Krypton's fall is that their genetic selectivity doomed them. The workers kept mining. The politicians kept debating, blinded by hubris. Zod, driven by his DNA, had the right idea when he wanted to destroy the ruling class and GTFO with the Codex. Jor-El, being a scientist, also had the right idea: keep the advantages of the Codex while allowing free births. Zod, caring only about protection, wanted to erase the lesser traits from the Codex and that's why they couldn't agree and eventually nobody won.

Metropolis wa sunder attack for only a couple of hours at most. Was NY evacuated on 9/11? It's impossible.

Pretty sure there was a lot more destruction than 9/11, Where was the army in evacuating these citizens. And Metropolis was attacked twice.

Superman could have barked orders at them to go underneath, or even used his freeze breath on his head

Yup, the police officer might know. The Smallville priest knows for sure.

He tries to go away. When he can't, he signals Kal to do nothing and is swiped by the wind 10 seconds later. Not that being in a car helps much.

The car provides a protective shell, it gives a chance at survival compared to just standing outside.

I dunno if they qualify as plot holes, but there was a lot of stupid nonsense in this movie.  To name a few:

Kryptonians are a stupidly advanced civilization that somehow can't figure out their planet is about to implode.

As their planet was about to blow up, they decided a great punishment for Zod would be to send him off planet instead of just leaving him there to die.

Superman's DNA somehow contains billions of other people's DNA.  Kryptonians must be really good at file compression. >_>

Black holes don't disappear once all of the bad guys are gone.

The f**king terraforming system had a defense mechanism.

There's a severe shortage of officers in the military because they kept using the same officer for every mission.

Kevin Kostner literally just died for the f**k of it.  Someone has to go get the dog?  Well, my superhuman son couldn't possibly jog over there at human speed and jog back with the dog in time.  I'll just risk my life instead.

Superman's powers are simultaneously caused by earth's sun and earth's atmosphere.  I'm not asking for a good explanation for his powers, just a consistent one.

Lois Lane is taken up to Zod's ship for the sole purpose of freeing superman.  Seriously, Zod needs her for absolutely nothing.

The humans in Metropolis are completely unaffected by the increased gravity and toxic atmosphere the terraforming machine makes.  Cars are being crushed 10 feet away and Morpheus is fine because....? (because he's Morpheus would be an acceptable explanation actually).

It should be really obvious who Superman is.

The scout ship is thousands of years old, but Superman's thumb drive is somehow compatible with it.  Imagine what it'd be like to use Vista for 2000 years with no updates.

Hundreds of millions of people died and no one seemed to notice.  For real, every person on the east coast of India probably died in a Tsunami and it's never mentioned.

Zod is invincible, but Superman breaks his neck.  I know this one can be explained, but they really could have come up with a more creative way of getting rid of Zod.  It's really disappointing to have someone who is supposedly invincible killed because that guy over there is really strong.

"They say it's all downhill from the first kiss."  "That's only for humans" might be the dumbest onscreen exchange of the year.  It's not a plothole, but it is really stupid.

Zod is invinsible, but Superman breaks his neck.

HomicidalCherry

I love this game.

The science caste knew the planet was doomed. But the entire civlization is made of drones. They don't understand and don't even try to understand. Zod's instinct to protect the planet makes him pay attention to Jor-El's warning.

Since the rulers are completely oblivious, yes, they put Zod in jail.

Micro black holes are real and evaporate after a very short existence. We have models of various black hole sizes, from some that can safely pass through materials to some strong enough to affect a city, a continent, the planet and so on. Man of Steel is stretching known science but there is a kernel of plausiblity in there. It's strange to complain about that and not the terraformer which increases the planet's mass...

And yeah, it had a defense mechanism. Why not? The Kryptonians and the humans are not alone.

The officer and his team were kinda familiar with the aliens, so why not send him?

Costner's death is logical. Kal-El had to be sheltered until he understood his destiny. If he had been discovered before meeting Jor-El, he would have been captured, tested, interrogated and tormented. He would live in constant fear of them discovering some way to control or harm him. His personality would have been altered. Who knows what monster would eventually escape into the world? He needed answers before going out of hiding. Pa Kent knew that and he made the ultimate sacrifice to keep Kal-El safe.

Superman's powers are caused only by the Sun. Ma Kent explains how he had difficulty adjusting to our atmosphere and gravity as a baby. On Zod's ship he experiences the same difficulties when the environment is altered. This is as straightforward as it gets. Don't forget that he's not an all-powerful being - the oil rig actually crushes him at the beginning and towards the end both he and Zod are scared by a building coming down after the supports are lasered. They're not sure how strong they are and there are certainly limits to their resistances.

Lois is taken to the ship because the dude with the glasses said she knows who Superman is on TV. On the ship they invade her mind just like they did with Superman, as she tells him later.

Morpheus is fine because the gravity and atmosphere expand little by little with every pulse of the terraformer. Imagine a HL2 thumper whose influence would expand with every new beat.

Jor-El explains the Krypton civilization was on its deathbed. Even on Earth we have plenty of stagnant civilizations. I mean some dudes are still in the early stone age out there... Why wouldn't the effect be similar on a larger scale in a drone-based society?

I think I missed the tsunami. There is a large bodycount - so what? Should every movie set in WW2 remind you of all the victims or would you rather see the adventure and move on without a lecture on the problems of the world?

As for the kiss thing, this Superman is sort of cocky as a grown-up. He is definitely a bit smug when interacting with the military. When he breaks Zod's helmet he takes pleasure in Zod's confusion and taunts him.

Yeah, Kryptonians are unreasonably stupid for any kind of society, nevermind an advanced one.

Yeah, Kryptonians are unreasonably stupid for any kind of society, nevermind an advanced one.

All black holes, micro or maxi, theoretically evaporate through Hawking Radiation and this doesn't take 35 seconds.  They're not stretching science, it's just nonsense.  I can accept the terraformer because it's possible to add mass to something.  That they didn't explain how they're adding mass didn't really bother me because it's at least physically reasonable.  30 second insta black holes are not reasonable, they're a lazy plot crutch.

It's a terraformer.  There is no good reason for it to have a defense mechanism to fight off a combatant like Superman.  Imagine if we started mounting howitzers on our oil platforms or machine guns on the Mars rover.  This is a society that cleanly divides functions.  The terraformer changes the planet, the military protects the terraformer.

Costner's death had nothing to do with protecting Superman's identity.  Like I said, have Superman jog up to the car, grab the dog and jog back.  If he gets stuck or something happens, he runs away before anyone can see and people can assume he was lost in the tornado.  There was no risk.  It was just a contrived scene that killed Pa Kent off for no good reason.

Superman's powers are caused by the sun, sure.  So how come Zod and the other Kryptonians get half of their powers (strength, speed, etc) from the sun and only get the other half (laser vision, x-ray vision, super hearing, etc) when they're exposed to earth's atmosphere.  It's not an adjustment issue, their senses get stronger and their eyes get heat vision directly from the atmosphere so we're left wondering what causes the powers atmosphere or sun.

Yeah, see why did they need to invade her mind?  It didn't really provide much useful information.  If they can invade Superman's mind they know who he is and more.  She's just there to help the plot along.

I get the thumper and it's not the worst of the plot problems.  It's there to create suspense even if it doesn't work in the most logical way.  I can accept alien technology, blah blah, on this one.

I find it very hard to imagine a computer system not being updated at all in thousands of years, stagnant or not.

There was a massive alien device that crashed into the Indian ocean like an asteroid, then started creating waves with its giant gravity gun.  There were multiple Tsunamis, everyone just ignored them because destruction not in Metropolis doesn't matter.

Superman being cocky doesn't explain that painfully awkward exchange.  That's definitely up there for one of the worst one-liners I've heard.

Yeah, etc.

HomicidalCherry

You are trying to outsmart the movie.

You are not eager to hear a story, just to prove your superiority.

You do this by rejecting perfectly valid storytelling devices used since the dawn of civilization.

You bend your myopic view to fit your purpose, in one sentence dismissing Krypton's organisation and in another using it as a crutch to support your fallacy.

You are also twisting the facts established by the movie.

Also, I'm not sure what's worse - this or debating alien logic.

I noticed a lot of people whining about MoS seem to have either gone into the film expecting something totally different or don't actually know much about Superman in the first place. I mean, for instance, that "black hole" is actually a portal into the phantom zone. It's not necessarily meant to work in the line of a normal black hole. Also, there was a prequel comic that does help explain a few things.

It's like someone dropped the script and then couldn't retrieve all the pages. Also, there was plenty of awkward and meaningless scenes. I didn't like the plot. And the worst thing.......... there wasn't enough Faora-Ul !!!

I think I do.

SultaN-s

then what was the plot hole you were referring to?

Why do Kryptonians speak English ?
there are more weaknesses to find in the story if you read the more professional reviews.

Dude you do realize that nearly every single one of those things is explained in the movie right?

Jor-El's AI was in the command key thing that was in the ship with the baby Clark, which was then downloaded into the ship in the ice when he put the command key into the console when he first entered the ship.

Since the Jor-El AI could do things like open and close doors in the ship and bring the ships systems online and all that good stuff, you don't think it'd be possible for it to make Kryptonian clothing with the symbol of the house of El on it?

Clark heard an army guy in the bar saying that they found something buried very deep in the ice, which is why he went and got a job working in the area.

Why would they give a crap about Martha when they had established the codex wasn't there and Clark shows up and starts attacking their leader?

He gets his power from the sun. He needs Earth's atmosphere to breathe since that's the only atmosphere he has adapted to.

Kryptonians know English, as well as all the other languages of Earth, which they showed when Zod first came to Earth. Now why were they speaking English on Krypton?  I guess for convienience to the audience because they speak English in all the other movies, TV shows, and in the comics.

Instead of looking for "plot holes" you should probably watch a movie and understand what is going on first.

The plot in general was dumb. It may as well been a Michael Bay movie. Chris Nolan has his first official FLOP, critically speaking.

I agree with the Michael Bay part of it, especially toward the end. I thought the beginning was a part live-action Superman movies needed. But to be fair for Nolan, he just wrote the story with the guy who wrote the screenplay. Zack Snyder directed. He's the guy that did 300, Dawn of the Dead, and Watchmen. I think if Nolan had directed it would have gone differently, maybe for the better, but it was good for a Zack Snyder film. I'd say a decent 8/10

I can definitely say there was no shortage of action in the movie. The plot actually seemed pretty straightforward, maybe that was why it wasn't that interesting. Still a entertaining movie.

No, I just thought the movie was filled with lazy storytelling.  To be fair, I'm nitpicking with some of plot holes, but other ones are legitimate problems with the movie.  Kevin Kostner's death lacked emotional impact for me for two reasons.  The first was that some of the scenes that fleshed him out more happened later in the movie.  But the main one was that I was literally face palming about how ridiculous and unbelievable the scene was while it was happening.  It's not hard to come up with a similar situation that actually makes sense and forces Clark to make the same choice so it's just laziness and bad storytelling that they didn't come up with something different.

The temporary blackhole nonsense was the same thing.  They could have come up with a less clumsy plot device.  Instead they chose something ridiculous that took me out of the movie.  If they were bending science to do something really clever or interesting with the plot, I'd be ok with it.  But it was just a completely standard figure out the villain's weakness and exploit it so there's just no excuse for it being so stupid.  You're right, Man of Steel uses many plot devices that have been around for centuries, but it doesn't use them well.  That's the problem.

Kryptonians speak Kryptonese. But why the hell would they put that in the movie when they could just speak english because the audience doesn't care because it isn't important what freaking language they speak!

This is not a normal black hole. It's a portal to the phantom zone. Someone else already said this. It's been a part of Superman lore forever... They did sort of throw around the term "black hole" which I found weird. They used the word on Krypton too when they were first sent to the Phantom Zone. Apparently they use a black hole to send them there or something. If you have an issue with the use of the term then I understand. But they never used a literal black hole.

I have to disagree with your assessment of the film. I'm not the biggest Superman fan but I absolutely loved this movie and I thought that the story and world were nicely fleshed out. I do agree with your last statement though.

Yeah, honestly, I don't know why they added black holes to it. I've never heard the term black hole used to describe anything in relation to the phantom zone in any of the stories I've read. They may have in the older stories (as in pre-crisis) which I've never touched. It didn't really bother me much though. I'm not going to claim to be an expert on black holes so I don't know if it's plausable or what. My background's in psychology so I don't know anything about this stuff.

I just saw MoS for a second time last night. And it's unbelievable to me that people had such a huge problem with the movie. Literally everything is explained or atleast mentioned and talked about. Everything made sense in the movie. If people honestly can't see how things made sense, and how the large scale battle was in few mile radius of vacancy with no one living (other than Perry, that other guy, and Jenny just because they're characters in the movie), then fine lol. I saw it, understood it, and loved it more the second time around.
