I was debating on trying some at a japanese place I ate at the other day but really wasnt sure what to expect. Has any of you ever tried it and what's the best way you could describe the taste?

Of course I have!
Octopus is delicious. I cant describe the taste but imo it has a less "weird" taste than other sea food ("weird" for those who dont particularly like sea food), although personally I like all sea food so far.
Try it. I dont think you wont like it. The worst that might happen is to find it "boring" but not actually bad.
I think I had it in some mexican fish soup. It was amazing:D:P.-Big_Red-I was about to say, yeah I have because my mom uses it in her mexican seafood soup. It's delicious.
I've also had fried calamari at Thai restaurants and its delicious as well.

Octopus/squid is best eaten raw. They're not as rubbery like when they're cooked. But some people may have a problem with eating raw seafood. I like squid better especially when cooked and they stewed in their own ink. Then add seasoning, clear rice noodles, lotsa garlic and onions. MMMMM. Yum!
I have to brush my teeth and gargle with mouthwash afterwards though. Your breath would stink afterwards if you don't.
I have many times and I quite enjoyed it.
Since you're going to a Japanese restaurant there may be a chance they offer Takoyaki, I quite enjoyed it and there are many different... flavors or the more appropriate word would be dressings for the dish. That being said, this dish can be a shock for those who don't enjoy seafood or are picky eaters in general. I was with 5 friends when I had this dish on a recent trip to Japan and only me and one of my other friends enjoyed it. 3/5 of my friends absolutely hated it.
Overall if you've never tried something before you should always give it a try once or twice before u write it off. You'll never know if u like something or not just by looking at it.
I've eat Octopus Sushi, it is excellent. Be prepaired to do a lot of chewing, I cannot comment on cooked Octopus but raw Octopus was rather chewing but it was still delicious. I'd say try it. ;)
Yes, whole and live. It was really slimy and salty. To be completely honest, it was somewhat unpleasant. Oh and you're gonna have to chew really hard to kill it and chop it up in your mouth.goth_bacon
I heard horror stories of someone eating a live octopus and then have the octopus put up a fight while still in the throat because the guy didn't chew hard enough.

Yeah that seems plausible. Even if you chew it a lot, the tentacles still move. While it was in my mouth the tentacles were trying to escape. Pretty creepy. But it's a very interesting experience.I haven't had octopus but I did have squid before. I guess they are similar. The squid was kind of tough and a bit weird feeling.

They are actually very different imo.
Yes, I've eaten octopus, many times actually in different dishes. None of them japanese in the slightest.
It's actually common here. I'm more susprised that you haven't.
Though the octopus was dead all those times. They were also a little too big to put whole in yout mouth.
I've had that **** raw, son! Well, prepared at a Japanese restaurant, but RAW nonetheless. Octopus and squid have a very similar seafoody taste, and yeah it's mostly about the texture. It's like chewier squid. It's great coated with batter and fried, as well.
yah it's horrible. the taste is fine it's how long you have o chew it that sucks. It's incredibly rubbery. IT'll take you about 5 minutes to eat each mouthful.
I've never had squid or octopi (that I'm aware of). Perhaps I should try it sometime to see what it taste like...
