I'm including Tim Burton's original Batman from 1989 in the list

My favorite is Batman Returns

I need to see Batman 89 again but Batman Returns is my choice compared to the crappy Forever and Robin.

The original with Jack Nicholson is the only good one.

Mask of the Phantasm But out of the poll, I'm going with Batman Forever, if only for the song that was tied with the film.

this is the only correct answer... but from that poll, none come close to the original even if Christopher Walken was in Returns.

As you pointed out, it was 1989, but the original is the best.

Compared to the other Batman live action films, it was very mature, didn't really try to take it seriously, and the entire story was actually pretty suspenseful or at least in my opinion.

I completely forgot about Subzero though. Another great film with the same attributes.

The movies based on the Bruce Timm animated universe are way, way better than the live action films. The live films, in order: 1. Batman 2. Batman Returns 3. Batman Forever 4. Batman and Robin For me, Batman: The Animated Series is the best non-comic depiction of Batman in any media. No other movie, cartoon, TV series, video game, or anything else comes close.

Far, far, far better than any of the Burton or Schumacher films. I'd even take it over the Nolan films (the two that are out, anyway). Being an extension of the Animated Series, it manages to capture the dark and dreary tone of the Golden Age comics while still being appropriate for younger audiences. And it actually respects the source material, too. TAS is more faithful to the comics than any other adaptation of Batman by far.

Some of the live action films have attempted to give personality to Batman and motive. So I cannot agree with your assessment.

Although it's not a "great" movie, I have a soft spot for Batman Returns. I love the way The Penguin and Catwoman were portayed in that movie. Perfect casting choices.
So the differing reactions that Batman and the Phantasm have to similar origin stories (murdered parents), their failed romance, and the framing of Batman don't qualify as motives or personality?
Seriously, are you even listening to yourself?

The background story integrates into the plot... the movie is told in the styIe of Citizen Kane, dealing with the passage of time and traumatic events. Each flashback in the film is progressively worse from the perspective of Bruce's love life. Both Batman and the Phantasm draw their motivations from their extremely similar origins, and the contrast in their actions directly reflects the way each of them handled their traumatic origin. It's about Bruce coming to the realization that a love life, and indeed a fulfilling personal life in general, is not a luxury Batman can afford. When he puts the mask on he is essentially shedding his former self, and when the Phantasm appears it shakes the foundation of the man that he has become in the time since.

To be completely honest with you, I've never even heard of it before this thread. I just watched all the live action films in like two days and was curious about what other people thought was the best out of them. I'm gonna go watch it soon though because it sounds like it's awesome...

It was in theaters but it didn't do very well, so it is understandable if you have never heard of it. Only reason I've seen it is because it was a present when I was a kid.

I recommend watching Batman: The Animated Series. Mask of the Phantasm is a movie tie in set in that universe. There are some very powerful episodes of the Animated Series; in particular "Heart of Ice" (the plot for which was partially and poorly shoehorned into the film Batman and Robin) and "Robin's Reckoning".

So are you actually going to make an argument or are you just going to continue with vague denials until I get bored and leave? Are you going to elaborate on your criticisms or just trail off into ellipses?

You're the one that assumed because I said the live action movies showed the motivations of Batman I was referring to this background story. I've had to tell you twice now that isn't the case....boring in and of itself. Nonetheless, I was referring to how Batman develops with the other people in the movies. For instance....the Nolan movies....which you dismissed.....the end of TDK we see how Batman has taken on the role of villain because the people of Gotham needed that from him at that time. The entire two movies led up to the point and it shows growth on his part. But hey if you're happy with the Mask of the Phantasm then I can't see that you'd appreciate a movie that has a bit more depth to it.
