I'm including Tim Burton's original Batman from 1989 in the list
My favorite is Batman Returns

not to be rude but why is this suppose to be the best batman cartoon of 90's? i might need to watch it again to understand it. and i kinda prefer sub zero over this(this is also my answer to thread)None of the above

I really like Batman & Robin. It was pretty funny and entertaining. TonyDanzaFanOne of the most fun you could have watching a film is with Batman and Robin

Compared to the other Batman live action films, it was very mature, didn't really try to take it seriously, and the entire story was actually pretty suspenseful or at least in my opinion.
I completely forgot about Subzero though. Another great film with the same attributes.

i feel the same way for all the batman films on this list.
Really glad to see so many mentions of Mask of the Phantasm.famicommanderI've seen it....it was okay and all...but the hype in this thread is a bit ridiculous. Wasn't that great of a movie....

Wasn't that great of a movie.... Far, far, far better than any of the Burton or Schumacher films. I'd even take it over the Nolan films (the two that are out, anyway). Being an extension of the Animated Series, it manages to capture the dark and dreary tone of the Golden Age comics while still being appropriate for younger audiences. And it actually respects the source material, too. TAS is more faithful to the comics than any other adaptation of Batman by far.

Some of the live action films have attempted to give personality to Batman and motive. So I cannot agree with your assessment.LJS9502_basic
So the differing reactions that Batman and the Phantasm have to similar origin stories (murdered parents), their failed romance, and the framing of Batman don't qualify as motives or personality?
Seriously, are you even listening to yourself? I wasn't talking about the retelling of the background story...so no. The background story integrates into the plot... the movie is told in the styIe of Citizen Kane, dealing with the passage of time and traumatic events. Each flashback in the film is progressively worse from the perspective of Bruce's love life. Both Batman and the Phantasm draw their motivations from their extremely similar origins, and the contrast in their actions directly reflects the way each of them handled their traumatic origin. It's about Bruce coming to the realization that a love life, and indeed a fulfilling personal life in general, is not a luxury Batman can afford. When he puts the mask on he is essentially shedding his former self, and when the Phantasm appears it shakes the foundation of the man that he has become in the time since.
Why isn't Mask of the Phantasm on there?Sajo7To be completely honest with you, I've never even heard of it before this thread. I just watched all the live action films in like two days and was curious about what other people thought was the best out of them. I'm gonna go watch it soon though because it sounds like it's awesome...

Only reason I've seen it is because it was a present when I was a kid.

There are some very powerful episodes of the Animated Series; in particular "Heart of Ice" (the plot for which was partially and poorly shoehorned into the film Batman and Robin) and "Robin's Reckoning".
