All I see (in this thread are bands) that are multiplatunum artists, or very huge cult bands. How can a band be popular and not be recognized? Oxymoronic question.
Nobody gives a hoot about death metal unless it was a band that's famous for being offensive, a la Cannibal Corpse.
With that statement, Atheist. Possibly the most influential of technical/progressive death metal bands alongside Death. And no one outside the community knows about them.

What are you talking about ? Necrophagist, suffocation, and nile are the most popular death metal bands at my school.
The veer union, they have some absolutely amazing songs but aren't really known hollywood undead dosen't get enough credit due to their image, but they have a lot of great songs with meaning
