It seems like I have been seeing her name more often lately. I can't really fathom why she and her objectivist ideology are this popular. Any Randians willing to explain?

I thought her name looked familiar. I only know her as the author of Atlas Shrugged, which I have yet to read.

Probably because of Bioshock, as several people have said. Regardless, I think Ayn Rand is an idiot.

I don't get why people would buy into Ayn Rand due to Bioshock. Bioshock is the worst possible advert for her philosophy.

Nah, I think it predates Bioshock by quite a bit; many Libertarians have held her up as a bodhisattva for their philosophy for quite some time

Nah. Anti-government sentiment probably has more to do with it than Bioshock. I agree with Chessmaster and Francis on the matter. I swear, the more works I find that espouse Objectivism, the more I hate the philosophy.

Well, among gamers, Bioshock probably helped raise awareness of he objectivist philosophy, which she depicted in her novel Atlas Shrugged. However, the difference is that in Atlas Shrugged, the elite society flourished while the world around it crumpled without its greatest minds, whereas in Bioshock, it's just the opposite.

To those who said they "hate" her philosophy, why? What makes it worse then any other philosophy faulting out there? Which philosophical ideology do you feel trumps her's? Im not challenging you or anything, Im just curious of why you think its bad?

Because it has promoted the despicable lie that the poor deserve their lot because they're a bunch of lazy moochers, when the reality is that a lot of the homeless are mentally disabled, physically disabled, children, elderly, or are unemployable due to problems with criminal records, mental illness, or the fact that many employers require prospective employees to have an address with the homeless, ipso facto, do not have. Also, it turns out that the people who promote the ideology don't really give me a good impression - Terry Goodkind with his "evil pacifists" and morally questionable protagonist; Ditko's "Mr. A," whose main superpower seems to be lecturing people to death; "The Girl Who Owned a City," in which someone who scavenges goods lectures people on rightful ownership; and Jay Naylor's webcomics, which endear me more to his designated strawman than to his protagonists.

Immature high schoolers can't get enough of the idea that the world revolves around them, hence the popularity of Ayn Rand on the Internet.

Ayn Rand was an unhinged narcissist whose ideal society was a social-darwinistic dystopia in which no one helps anyone and the poor are left to rot. Her crappy books and incoherent philosophy have spread to many of the world's richest a kind of hideous corporate pseudo-Nietzscheanism in which the real heroes are greedy, selfish fatcats.

I'm not a fan.

In most literature courses, students are tasked with pointing out both the advantages and disadvantages to the objectivist society depicted in Atlas Shrugged.

I don't see the problem there. If you disagree with her philosophy, then that's what you touch on in your thesis.

I'd find it far more interesting to write a thesis on a philosophy that actually had some merit.

Take a look at this article about why she sucks. If you have time, read the comments as well. The writer was good enough to respond to the opposition.

I really don't like Ayn Rand. Her books are long and poorly written excuses for her to preach her philosophies. I have read Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, and Anthem, and I disliked all three. The stories are just dull. None of the characters are very interesting, and some of the monologues are painful to read. There are tons of better writers than her who don't cram their political, and philosophical views down your throat.

Doubtful. Ayn Ran herself was an atheist, and her philosophy is explicitly anti-Christian, but I find it highly unlikely that any of that draws in atheists on account of "reason." Almost everyone tries to put themselves on the pedestal of "reason." That Ayn Rand tried to do it is nothing special.

Probably teenagers finding out she exists, due in large to the internet. Personally, I am really not a fan. Her vehement hostility towards even voluntary charity and religion (not even the argued affects of religion so much as the mere belief is what she particularly didn't like) didn't help with that. As an above poster said, I found very interesting how she self declared her opinion as the epitome of reason. That libertarians often put her on the pedestal that they do disappoints me.
