I'd say Melee is a better game, but I still play Brawl more often because of the newer content.

Melee was more tournament friendly, overall Brawl is much better even with some odd gameplay tweaks, the game fights better.

Melee,no doubt about it. Much more engaging and better designed than Brawl is.

Here we go again. My opinions on the matter:

Melee is by far the superior game for more serious play, but also allows you to have quite a bit of fun in multiplayer with a few friends. Single player is short, simple and arcade-y. Adventure mode doesn't pretend to be the main attraction when its clearly just there as a bonus. Stages were some of the best in the series. So many characters compared to the original, though some were close to strait clones.

Brawl is by far the superior game for friendly play. New items really add to the craziness. Serious play is possible, but the lack of any built in advanced moves, almost non-existent hit stun, and tripping make it much less enjoyable. Single player is awful. Adventure mode is the main draw, but it is slow (partially as an effect from the rather toned down, floaty fighting style), tedious, and far too long -- You just can't make a good action platformer out of a fighter. Tons of extra content. Great music and look. New stages were Ok, a mixed bag. Lots of characters with pretty good balance.

It really just comes down to what you like. I prefer more serious play, thus,I find melee to be the superior game. I played that game till the day Brawl came out (and sometimes I still do). I've stopped playing Brawl already.

Brawl. There's more to unlock, more characters and there's also more that you can do with just one player. Plus it has wifi, even if it is laggy at times :P

I found my melee 1v1 games against friends much more epic then brawls. For singleplayer or just messing around brawl is more fun but for serious duels melee is much more fun.

Brawl is more fun.

Melee people get way into the match and really annoy me and we end up getting really mad pretty soon, which is the opposite of the intended purpose.

Both are fun games, though.

I like brawl better. To me, it fixed most of melee flaws. Going back to play melee, it seemed extremely fast pace and could be exploited in so many areas. I can't believe I once was a Link master in that game. I mean, before brawl came out, I was able to keep up with melee pace. I used to be able to "see" (I think predict could be a better term though) when a computer or someones attack and could easily dodge and counter without fail. After playing brawl for so long then playing Melee, I can't see how I did it. Captain falcon can practically sail across an entire stage with two good jumps making kneeing a person very difficult, my fighting style with Link in brawl is nearly suicidal to Link in melee since it seems gravity in melee was 5 times heavier. And the CPU wtfpwns me every time I fight it, especially fox. I can't believe I thought melee CPU was a peasant and used to actually fight 3 on 1 battles against them because of how weak they are.....

And why is that the real answer? Anyway, I like Brawl better, because of the bigger roster and the better adventure mode.

This. Melee was such a huge step above the clunky N64 SSB. Brawl is better but not as significant of a step up as Melee was compared to it's predecessor.

Melee by far.

-Melee has a more interesting Adventure Mode (even if it has less effort put into it)

-Melee has a more balanced character roster (which is pretty sad)

-Melee has better graphics (I'll take anti-aliasing over pixelated high-res textures any day)

-Melee has faster-paced, skill-focused gameplay (Instead of slow motion, Meta-Knight, and tripping)

-Melee has Mewtwo (Brawl has nothing)

-Melee has better online

The only thing I was joking about is the online. Melee and Brawl are equal in that regard.

Melee is the better game by far.

BlazBlue. Definitely BlazBlue. Have you played BlazBlue? No, you haven't. Definitely BlazBlue.

Mandatory Neon Love for BlazBlue aside, I prefer Brawl to Melee. Though when Melee came out I preferred it to the original. One of the cool things about SSB is that each entry has been better than the previous one. I wish they brought over everyone from Melee, but I'll have to live with little things like that. It's more fun to play with four people in Brawl than it is in Melee, and it's more fun to play with four people in Melee than it is in the original. But I really do like Brawl a lot. It's good fun, and until I get my hands on Tatsunoko VS Capcom to see if that game is better than Brawl or not, at the moment SSB: Brawl is the best fighter the Wii has.

I enjoy Super Smash Bros. Brawl a lot more for being more polished than Super Smash Bros. Melee. That is my main reason.

Even the people who like Melee would be forced to play Brawl anyway - the online matches are the real test of any Smash Bros. player.

hard choice really. i still play both of them a lot. melee has fast paced and competitve fighting, it requires a lot more skill to survive. and brawl has a lot of options characters, items (although i alsways turn off items), etc. i cant decide

My ratings: Melee- 9.0 Brawl-9.0 Brawl is a bit better because of 1: Sonic the HedgeHog 2: Solid Snake 3:Better Graphics However if I stilll had melee(which I want to buy back) I would say the adventure mode on melee is better but brawl is overall just a bit better.

I bought Brawl day 1, 50 euro, and thought it was crap :| I had never played a Smash Bros game before, so I assumed the series just wasn't for me. But I played Melee recently and it seems a lot more fun. Faster, more precise, or something. Brawl felt very floaty and not like I was in control for some reason. I do love the music, items, levels, and characters from Brawl though.
