A lot of tourny players will say Melee solely because it has more technical depth.
However, Brawl is better than its successor in almost every other way, with a larger, more balance character roster, a bevy of new and interesting stages, an improved Single Player (admit is, SSE is still better than any SP a fighter game has ever had) and the many little tweaks made to the old formula. Sure online is a joke and the Stage Builder could be better, but even these additions add to Brawl's superiority.
Melee gave me seven golden years of entertainment; it was my first Gamecube game and it held up through it all. Brawl hasn't been with me long enough and I haven't enjoyed nearly as much as I did Melee. So I guess I like Melee better than Brawl: it had more depth, combos were better (existent I should say), and it was less simplistic. Everything Brawl added to the game was fine, but what they took out from Melee to make it more of a party game made it less stellar. While I still play Brawl a lot more nowadays and enjoy it, I'd probably like it better if it more of a Melee 2.0. :P Maybe that'll change in seven years :D

Considering there has only been 2, that's not saying a whole lot. Although I think SSE was an interesting idea, I think it was a total waste of development time.
In terms of actual fight mechanics, I'd go with Melee. In Brawl it's a lot more floaty. Fox used to drop like a rock, but now it's more like a rock with a parachute. However, in every other aspect, Melee pails in comparison.

It's still better. Pretty much every fighting game's SP is you VS computer AI in a series of rounds. SSE wasn't all that great, but it beat pretty much every other fighting SP by a mile.
Honestly I like Melee better. I think it's because it made a stronger impression on me when it was first released. I was expecting a game similar in size to the original and Melee was just so much deeper that it just blew me away. Brawl did expand on Melee, but not in as a big a way as Melee did with the original, so I got bored with it much quicker.

On the contrary, I remember a weekend where me and my cousin went with out sleep for 2 straight days playing nonstop to unlock all the charecters and trophies. Melee had staying power for the entire Gamecubes lifecycle.
Gameplay wise i would say Brawl is better. but it just didnt last as long as Melee did. It offered years of entertainment. While Brawl hasnt lasted tht long for me. It might just be me. But i dont even play Brawl anymore.
I like brawl better. A lot of characters that should have been there in the first place are there. I think Melee plays faster though, so at first it was hard to get used to brawl.
Brawl because it had the big hype of Snake and Sonic added to the roster with no disappointment, and of course the amazing SSE. Online is a joke that makes me think they just added on at the end, but SSE makes up for it.
SSBB. Characters are balanced, legendary soundtrack, improved single player. Even though Melee was my first GC title. I have to go with Brawl. Simply amazing. And the inclusion of Snake and Sonic.
Brawl is far better than Melee. I don't know, but to me Melee seemed to have lost a lot of appeal that the original one had. Brawl on the otherhand picked up on that feeling again. It is hard to explain. Anyone else feel this way? Nevertheless, the original is the best.

It's not just the glitches, Brawl is somewhat simpler compared to melee.
