Saving NES games on VC?

Can you save in NES games from the VC? Like Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2, where you typically could not.

Just hit the HOME button and get out of the game. When you start it again it'll be where you stopped.

You can save, as in suspend your game, and come back to it a different time, for any game. But you can't actually create a save "file" for games that didn't offer it. Tell me if that didn't make sense.
