Is it just me or do you also think that this is weird?

I don't know why but I haven't seen a single review for a 3DS game get rated any higher than an 8.5/10. Why is this? They did this with the Wii a LOT too although games like Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel got 10s. What gives really? Are none of the games good enough to deserve a 9 or higher? I don't understand why so many games for the PS3 can have scores like that but this system doesn't have any games with a 9 or higher--at least here.

The PS3 has been out almost half a decade longer. GameSpot will eventually give a 9 to a 3DS game once they stop having reviewers more intent on looking like harsh respectable critics review handheld games, and have people like Kevin review them who actually play the game through before they review it.

There are a few games which deserve a 9, but they always end up getting reviewed by the wrong people. In my frustration at the Project X Zone review I could write a whole article, but it would end up in a flamewar.

I find review scores meaningless anyway, but if you look at the Wii also, other then a select few games, it seems as if the highest score GameSpot could give Wii games was 8.5. Off the top of my head the only ones I can think that scored higher were Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and No More Heroes.

Because the majority of 3ds games that arent pure crap are nintendos franchises they jerkoff constantly. A 187th mario game isnt worth being higher than a 8.5. No matter how good a nintendo game is anymore its always going to be like the 100th version.

The only other really good games on the 3ds come from atlus, nis, xseed and those generally are still imperfect enough to not warrant insanely high scores.

The rest is shovelware.

Because the majority of 3ds games that arent pure crap are nintendos franchises they jerkoff constantly. A 187th mario game isnt worth being higher than a 8.5. No matter how good a nintendo game is anymore its always going to be like the 100th version.

People take their reviews seriously? Outside of 1 or 2 reviewers most of the 'reviews' done are rant fests or fanboy praise without an actual description of the good and the bad and a lot of stuff is glossed over. My benchmark for reviews is Gamebanshee, for the games they review its 5 PAGES of ripping the game apart to see how things work together in a good or bad way, with some opinion thrown in.

it has to be cutting edge tech or else they dont score it as high.

well gamespot may not have given any 3ds games any higher than an 8.5 but I know other gaming sites have, it's better to just look at the overall score. Maybe gamespot is being paid enough or something to make the scores higher lol :P. I mean... look at what they gave Skyward Sword :P.

That's the problem. You thinking it deserves a 9 doesn't mean GameSpot needs to give it a 9. I thought it got what it deserved.

Handhelds are second class citizens around here. The reviews tend to be fair but they approach them as "only" handhelds. 3DS is the top selling console week in week out these days and still major releases don't get video reviews or any reviews in a lot of cases. That says a lot about how they are approaching these games, if you ask me.

If the game is rated 6-10 I will give the review a look, and see if i will enjoy the game based on that and gameplay videos. I usually trust Gamespot if the score is lower than that, but don't pay much attention to the exact score if it is within the 6-10 range.

Out of the 3DS games I played, I feel that New Leaf and Luigi's Mansion certainly deserve scores that are above 8.5.

However, reviews are personal, so...
