Well, like someone above saud, he thinks it should be a 3D platformer like Super Mario 64. That's kinda what I think they should do for a console game. I don't think it should have the same story though. Maybe a different one or a sequel.
Well ur idea is very good lets sumerize a few things. Well start with using enimies but ones with specific purposes. Use koopa to spin past fast things ( like spikes crunching against each other), maybe a hammer bro to throw a hammer and hit a switch. 2 examples but show different ideas, whatyour really creating is a SONIC HEROES CLONE. You leveling up idea would fit then. as you get more points or find certian items, the characters would level up gaining more power or speed ( my 2 examples again: koopa spins faster, hammer bro throws farther or big hammers) The main difference is you will be able to chosse ur teamates and still make it throw the level either way. More types will be available ( like flying and swimming like a cheep cheep and fly guy) but Now your idea has some ground base. Now its time to build off that.

That sounds pretty interesting of a game...and unlike maybe some people..i actually get it! And its okay,i go a bit too long when i have an idea in my head too:D
