Nintendo 64 had very poor texturing capabilities while it had for the time excellent texture filthering. The DS can produce a lot more textures with a lot more detail, but it's filthering is poor (PlayStation 1 level). It can also show a few hundred more polygons, so overall it's a bit better than both N64 and PS1.

I would not say its bit better than Nintendo 64 or PlayStation, overall, because, in general, seem as if developers are having more difficulty trying to produce 3D graphics on the system....

So...if anything...I would say that from what I can tell, Nintendo DS system capabilities, in general, are bit below Nintendo 64 or Play Station level, instead case of it being higher.... at least in regard to producing 3D graphics....

Maybe or maybe game develpors are too slack to make the effort of the powerful 3D hardware. Too busy eating twinkies. Also some games are above PS1 N N64 standard like MK DS it features GC tracks ( almost as good as the original ones ) and ff3 including more.

I'd put the poly pushing power about on par with the N64, but with the textures of the PS1.  Don't get me wrong, I love the thing, but don't ever expect DC or PS2 graphics out of it.

I say the best DS GAMES are N64 and a half graphics ( almost a gamecube ) the middle PS1/ N64 ( lanich games ) while the worst are SNES and a half  ( games that don't implement 3D ) this is in terms of graphics

They're slightly less powerful than the PS3's.:o

Nah,in all seriousness, they're better than the Nintendo 64's.

EDIT:Super Mario 64 DS has terrific graphics. You might want to check that.

The mhz in the N64 CPU is much stronger than the DS's both CPUs put together.

DS is much weaker than N64 BUT it's more efficient at running code which makes up for the lost mhz.

The funny thing is...if it's soo hard to put more graphics into DS games then they should do what they did for SNES Star Fox. (put a coprocessor in the cartridge). That would give the DS a third CPU to run the game faster/ better graphics.

OR, what I would like Nintendo to do is make that expansion card (graphics expansion) that N64 had. Make a DS expansion card (would come in a gba cartridge so that you can still put DS cards in).

That would solve all the problems of DS not being so strong....and with an expansion card instead of more graphics, they could have like 8players on wifi and stuff...limitless ideas :)

correct me if am wrong , I remember a while back there was a site discussing about putting GTA on DS. One guy said the top screen mhz was between 70-80 (its hard to remember ) while he siad the bottom screen was about 35mhz ( about that ). He thought it was possible to add the bottom mhz power to the top that way games would have stronger graphics and a higher frame rate. But then the touchscreen would be useless. ( since no power left in it )Maybe something similar could be done or a mod shop could install some king of graphic card or expansion pack to a game that way it'd look better.DS already has great graphics execpt the develepers are lazy to use them.

Judging by the actual specs, the console is somewhere between a Playstation and a N64 in graphics.

It is something like this

PSX--------------DS----N64

Which means that graphically it is much more powerful than a PSX, but still short of Nintendo 64 quality.

Well, texture filtering smooths the textures. Makes them look prettier. N64 can produce only very few of very low resolution textures, so they look kinda smudged. Luckily, with smart programing games can end up looking pretty good on the N64.

DS doesn't have the texture filthering capabilities of the N64, but can it can produce many more of much larger textures, giving a better look overall.

Hope that was explained successfully. :)

Well, texture filtering works great when you have powerful hardware (read: The Dreamcast and beyond)

The Nintendo 64's lack of polygons and the lack of texture RAM with texture filtering made the console a blurry mess. Texture filtering is THE reason why the N64 is a graphical mess and it made me very happy that the DS never used it.

That is why the DS has lots of super jaggies like the PSX, but also like the PSX with capable developers the graphical problems can be overcome (just look a DQ9 as a great example, or Vagrant Story for the PSX).

Yes, but the PS1 arguably aged much better because the N64's foggy and muddled graphics are impossible to look at

i keep hearing the ds is better than the n64, but i rarely see it in the games. the texture filtering is pretty shocking. but then games like metroid prime hunters come along and make me totally rethink its capabilities.

i...really dont care. i have awesome games for my DS. some look like SNES games (megaman zx and such) some look like its ps1or N64 quality (castlevania PoR and final fantasy III) and some look like it couldnt be done for other systems but the truth is we will probably nvr know wut the systems capable of until we see it done right in the games.
