I'm just curious as to, well, the topic is pretty self explanatory.

This topic however applies mainly to those who've had consoles die on them of natural causes ie those not 'tampered' with.

I'm mainly wondering how long the Wii lasts and what the failure rate among Gamespot members is.

If you've had a console fail on you, please leave a little comment on how long you had it for and what may have been the cause.

And if you're still on your first, let me know how long it's been!

Cheers in advance!

since the european launch (dec 06 i think). my first had a suspected faulty disc drive....but the replacement behaved in exactly the same manner and the first one never had a problem loading games or anything. i was just a bit worried as it seemed to make alot of unexpected noises....but ninty replaced the first under warranty anyway just in case. since then....its been very reliable for me.

I got mine at launch.

About a year ago it started not reading discs, and then did not start up at all... I sent it in for a $70 repair and Nintendo sent an entirely new Wii.

I've had mine since 2007. Only problems I've had were Freezing and Locking up.

Other than that it works perfectly fine.

Still on my first. I've had it since January '07. My genius cousin tripped over one of the cords to it a couple years back and it fell, and ever since then it hasn't been very good at reading discs, but it works fine enough.

I've been unfortunate to have two Wii's break down on me. One was that Super Smash Bros. problem in which they fixed for free and very quickly so that was fine, the second time the disc drive just stopped working for whatever reason. Unfortunately in that case it was no longer under warranty and my save files were not able to be retained.

I have had mine since May 2007 and it is as good as new. Nintendo platforms tend to have very low failure rates, I know most of my Nintendo legacy consoles are still working.

Had mine since launch day, nov 19, 2006.. I had to send it in after 2 years of no problems, the lens inside went bad and wouldn't read discs anymore (even after using the lens cleaning kit) ... this is the first time i've ever had to send a nintendo console in to get it repaired... my NES still works to this day! :D

The only problem I have had with mine (had since April 3rd, 2007) is it won't play my copy of Wind Waker. Speaking of, anyone have a solution to that problem?

I had a launch Wii, but I moved overseas, so I bought another one in 2007 and left the older one with my brother back home. I'm pleased to report that both Wii's are running perfectly, as is my Gamecube, 64, SNES and NES (not to mention the handheld range also works perfectly too!)

I can't remember exactly when it was, I think sometime in 07'. And I haven't had any problems at all, flawless, no freezing, no disc reading problems, nothing.

I've had my Wii about two years, and it has never failed me.

I've had to send both my PS3 and 360 in for repairs

Thanks for the response guys. The main reason I asked is because I purchased one not too long ago, a few weeks, and am really enjoying the titles on offer. It's be a long time since I've owned a Ninty console and forgot how fun the games were!

Anyway, I was planning on purchasing a Wii Remote/ Nunchuck combo so my sis could play too but a store near where I live had drastically marked down their inventory of white consoles. For an extra US$100 I can just buy another white console and keep it as a spare, while using the remote and nunchuck that come with it.

What do you guys think? (Take into consideration that where I live the Wii usually retails for US$250 while the remote/nunchuck go for US$50)

I've owned my console since launch. It broke down twice during the summer of 2007. Had it fixed for free both times.

No need for a spare, the console is very reliable. I've had mine since launch day and haven't had any problems. Just get the extra controller for your sister and use that hundred bucks to get some games for you two.

Only three-four weeks but no problems at all. Once the standby light was red instead of the usual orange; I have no idea what that means but it's running fine. This should be the only current gen console I own to have not broken down.

I have had my Wii since May of 2007. It occasionally shuts off after playing it for two-three hours straight (overheating I guess) and it has fell off of a 4 ft surface twice, but it still reads all of my games perfectly well.

I have had my Wii for getting close to two years now. I had one problem. . . . One day I was playing it and all of a sudden the screen froze and there was just a rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound that seemed like it would have gone on forever. This has happened two or three times. But no other problems.

It's a launch system, so I guess it must be... closing in on four years now. Wow... hard to believe it's been that long. Anyways, it's a lot louder than it used to be when it spins the disk, but I haven't had any problems with playing a game or anything of that sort. Hopefully, it's not indicating future disc-read problems...

I got mine two months after launch and I've only had one problem with it. About a year or so after I got it the Wii would suddenly freeze, make a loud clicking noise, and then smell like it was burning. Sent it into Nintendo and a week later they sent me a new one with all my data on it.

The graphics card in mine was overheating. Sent it to repair, and they gave me a new wii.
