Nintendo have said that most Wii games will be playable on the WiiU. My guess is the only games that wont be playable on the Wii U are the ones that use the GC ports on the Wii.
Will the WiiU be region free? Nintendo haven't said anything about that, but knowing Nintendo the WiiU will be region locked.

That and any app that will have a better verson on the Wii U, such as the web browser and Netflix and Hulu Plus.
