I've played a few hours online now and I've won almost every race, everyone sucks so badly, I'm winning by miles and I'm bored. Is there ranked matchmaking? I almost lapped someone at one point...

Keep playing. Matchmaking is based on your VR score, so the higher you get it, the harder the competition will be.
@gajbutler: Clearly your just one of the good players. Now if your taking shortcut's and drifting every corner and fire hopping then might I say STOP DOING THAT. Lower yourself down in skill. Heck use Motion Controls and see if you can still maintain 1st place. Don't hold an item behind you when your in first lol.
@JordanElek: False, you could come in 6th over and over and over again, eventually you would get up there lol. Even 1 VR point at a time.

That's what I said.... I meant the higher your VR score gets overall, the harder the competition will be.
Edit: lol, never mind, I see what you're saying. Somebody would have to be of middling skill for a LONG time to get a high VR score without actually being good.

No, you get less points as you get higher VR. It all depends on who you're playing with. For example, if you have 9000 VR and come second to people with 1000 VR, you will lose points (I just made up this example, I don't know the exact values).
So over time, the more you play, everyone will eventually fall into their "skill level" VR range.
@trugs26: Hmm...I disagree. A guy that was over 5,000 VR came in 9th and lost no VR...didnt gain any either but everyone but 1 guy who did better then his was in the 1,000 VR range. 1 other guy was at 4,000.
I don't get how people can be so bad, this is the first MK I've played since the N64 and I was instantly winning. I find it so odd that lots of people don't drift.. every person should know that, I don't understand how they don't? Surely people who bought this game have done because they've played MK before, who else would own a Wii U? Not like the Wii days of everyone buying it for Wii Fit or Wii Sports.
Maybe MK needs tool tips?

The only way that can happen is if the people behind him were fairly high VR too, or everyone else in the group (aside from that one guy with 1000) had high VR. Otherwise, that simply can't happen and I don't believe you. You're aware you can lose VR right?
Regardless, my point is getting sixth every time won't get you a VR point every time. I'll try to get a screen grab of an example tomorrow (I'll use my partner's account who has lower VR to match make with others with low VR, and I'll choose my Mii from the selection which has 2500 VR, and I'll deliberately get a low ranking and show the result).
@trugs26: No duh I know you can lose VR, but he did not. And no the people behind him meaning 10th - 12th were between 1,500 and 2,000. He didnt go down at all.

That's weird.
I am at about 2,200 and I lose VR whenever I place below 8th on a 12-player race.

Exactly what happens to me. I gain points if I'm racing people with 3K + though, and lose points if they're around or below me.
Please. This is MarioKart we're talking about here, there's no way you're coming in first every race unless you happen to land in a lobby with 11 3 year olds in it.
LOL this thread reminded about how theres going to be a Mario Kart Gaming Tournament at the local mall in August..........but its for 5-12 year olds. Uh them noobs probably dont even know there was any MKs before the Wii version! I know me, a few coworkers, and at least the Gamestop guys would throw down in some MK!
Ok, the VR you get/lose is definitely determined by the VR of those that play against you.
I just got first in a full room with a bunch of guys who had 3000+ VR and I got 24 points for that. Later, I got first in a room with less-experienced players and only received about 15 points.
