I never got it. "Bidoof's special defence was sharply raised" etc. I understand defense obviously, but what does the "special" added onto it mean?

What is special attack and special defense altogether? I'm lost, and wikipedia doesn't explain it well..

I've been wondering about this too! ^_^ So Non-physical attacks are "special"?

So normal attacks (without the Sp.) are like Normal, Dragon (maybe?), and Fighting attacks right? While the special ones are Fire, Water, Psychic, Ghost, Ice, and stuff like that?

Standard attack and defense stats affect the amount of damage PHYSICAL attacks deal, and prevent. These can be attacks such as punches, kicks, or basically, any attack that requires your Pokemon to come in direct contact with your foe. Special attack and defense however, affect the amount of damage NON-PHYSICAL attacks deal and prevent. Basically, any attack that doesn't require physical contact between two Pokemon is a special attack. Standard and special attacks add more depth to a battle. For example, lets say you have a Pokemon that has an incredibly high Attack stat, but a well below-average Special Attack stat. Even if that Pokemon uses "Hyper Beam" a very powerful Special Attack, it will hardly deal a decent amount of damage, due to its low Special Attack stat. Attack and Special Attack (along with Defense and Special Defense) are important to look for in Pokemon. It's unwise to load a Pokemon with powerful physical attacks if it's Special Attack stat is much higher. Alright, so basically, Attack/Defense is to physical moves, wihle Special Attack/Defense is to non-physical moves. Hope that clears things up. :)

Actually, the newer Pokemon games actually show if an attack is physical or special. For example, not all Fire type moves will be considered Special, since there are attacks such as Fire Punch (which requires physical contact). Normal and Fighting type moves are often stereotypically considered "physical" attacks. While this was relatively true to the older Pokemon games, this is not the case in the newer games, as Hyper Beam and Focus Blast are both Special Attacks and of the Normal and Fighting type. So in essence, any type of attack can be either considered Physical, or Special, depending on if your Pokemon comes in direct contact with your opponent or not. It's easiest to just check out the move type, since it is listed when you view your Pokemon's moves.

Not true. its not like that anymore with the release of Diamond and pearl.

There are Psyical and special move of every type.

For example fire. Flame Wheel and Fire Punch are Pysical while Flamethower and Fire Blast are Special.
