Kid Icarus deserved a much higher score than 5.1.

Yeah ign is better but I like the design and level stuff in gamespot, it's great!

i have fun playing it. it deserves much higher than 5.1. The cons for the review were that it was hard, the sound was basic, there weren't any cheats, and that there were some slowdown problems. The last one i listed is the only actual con.

this site should only be used for the forums not the reviews. chances are you will never be satisfied. but it is their opinion.

But that's just it, it shouldn't be reviewed by today's standards. If reviewed with the criteria of the past, it would have gotten a lot more.

It makes me wonder why do they even review VC games. I mean of course 15-20 years old games cannot rival with present games, both graphic-wise and gameplay-wise. It seems really unfair to me.

I think it comes down to opinion personally. I think games of past are considerably more enjoyable than today's games. They were more a challenge than an experience, and although considerably shorter, they some how lasted longer. Probably the difficulty actually... lol Not that I don't enjoy playing games today mind.

Well a game is meant to be fun, it's supposed to make the user glad he's playing, not hate video games.
The sound is VERY basic even compared to back then, considering how many times the sounds are tied to actions it's annoying after you play for a while. The cheats I can give or take, they're nice but not bad.
Slowdown is bad because most cases it kills you, games where you need to jump from platform to platform and can't fall (even though you have WINGS) makes slowdown awful.

The review is meant to show people how it compares to games these days

This is just like EGM's video of review of Sonic. They knocked it down because some of the stages were too hard for them :?. Games have just gotten way easier than back in the day. Easy + long is the way to go ever since the N64 + PS1 + Saturn era. Because of the CD being introduced, developers were given way more space than they were used to working with. So they shifted focus from the core game elements to adding as much content as possible, including graphics. They wanted gamers to be able to see all this content without working too hard for it, so they lowered the difficulty level. Because of this, new game elements are rarely introduced, unlike the 16 bit era where that was what sold a game. This is why we see Halo and GTA clones all the tiem... publishers wont produce a game that isn't a copy of a recently successful game. Basically, a gamer's challenge motivation standard is way lower than it use to be.

Today's standards don't apply at all on these games. I prefer a "worth or worth not" review with no numbers and I prefer to be us who played these games before who should say which games are worth.  

Reviewers are noobs if they are talking about today's standards. If the standards were applied the game should be more than that because of the level of difficulty.

thats a good point. 20 years later, not a whole lot lives up to the present standards. A worth it/not worth it system would be good.

Yup, what I've resorted to as well. Now that Kasavin left, I have absolutely no reason to read any GS reviews anymore.

which metroid? if its the original then it could but if its super metroid then it should get a very good score.

I don't pay attention to the VC reviews because most of the games I buy or will buy are either games I have played in the past or games I remember wanting to play growing up. However I think the reason they even review these games is because people are buying them now, so they have to make there review based on the current state of videogames. They should take into account the relativly low price and the expectations we have for 10-20 year old games. I bought Kid Icarus because I remembered playing it at my friends house when I was a kid and it was a lot tougher than I remember but to me that is the case with a lot of the VC games. Even Super Mario Brothers was kinda hard even though I used to be able to blast right through that game when I was like 11 years old or something. Anyway GS's VC reviews could probably use some work but we all pretty much know what we are buying anyway.

It shouldn't be reviewed by today's standards? Yeah it should be reviewed by today's standards. If I'm going to buy it, it is going to happen today not years ago.

reviewers are smart to review VC/XBLA/etc games by today's standards... as they know who is actually going to read their reviews. if you never played the classic game, you are going to play the game for the first time with your current standards of games in the back of your mind... like you would with any game. for gamers who have played the classics... reading a review would be a complete waste in the first place, since you already know what the game is about.
