Can the 3Ds play games with a regular ds?

I want to know because I have pokemon SS which is great. And so do couple of my friend. So i was wonderin if I have 3ds and them just a normal ds can we still do things like battle each other and trade?

If you're playing SS, you can battle/trade with other players with HeartGold/SoulSilver/Platinum/Diamond/Pearl.

B/W can only battle/trade with other B/W games regardless if you're playing them on the regular DS or 3DS.

yes u can play normal games on the 3Ds but u have to turn off 3D or it ruins your gameblue_leopard

Having the 3d slider on doesn't do anything to the DS game. The system pretty much disables it since its not a 3DS game.
