Being of the mind that you can learn more from a mistake then a success I have to ask what makes a game unplayable for you. Anything that makes a game so bad in your eyes you wont even touch it.

For me it's when they have mechanics that don't blend with the game or are clumsy. Like in the game of thrones video game(the 2012 one made by cyanide). In order to attack you had to "load" an attack and wait for you character to do it, instead of just having a attack button. It was something that I disliked enough to make me put the game down before I even got out of castle black(yes I didn't really give the game a shot but dammit this is GoT! I expect action mixed in with political intrigue and titties)

When a game is required to be connected to the internet to be played.....even for single player. If the internet goes down for even a second you're screwed. That's when I give up and move on to something else.

It can be anything if I find it bad enough or I'm just not interested in it enough. Gameplay, story, graphics, even audio.

For me, it's always unresponsive or janky controls, with the latter being the unintentional variety. If you can't make your game feel good to play, even just a little, it's not worth my time.

1)Bad Controls
2)Bad Level design
3)Bad physics(and not in the GTA San andreas style of "fun" bad physics i mean BIG rigs over the road racing type of bad physics).
4)Overall BAD gameplay

Unresponsive/ badly layed-out/ (and_or) lazy controls are just about the biggest turn-off for me, followed by still active enemies that get stuck in walls.

I don't have ridiculous standards in games, can even cope with poor level design but the above is essential. That's why I'm not a Witcher fan.

Unresponsive controls and low fps, sometimes the two are linked.

mine - mechanics.

no matter how good the premise if the mechanics suck then we can't be friends. alpha protocol springs to mind

unfortunately the repeating dungeon in phantom hourglass killed the game for me. outside of it there the game was great...but after 2 cracks at that dungeon i just couldnt bring myself to do it. i think it was the time limit more than anything (time limit are, in the vast majority of cases, just a lazy and cheap way to add challenge and they dont make the game more fun). i dont mind back tracking when the game is fun. but that killed it stone dead. it should be added to the zelda bible: no time limits on dungeons, ever.

and another one to add to the bible (for any game): dont let the player park themselves into a completely unwinnable situation. this is what killed spirit tracks. the game had one hit kill trains and if you made one mistake on selecting a track it was just a track to death. no chance to recover or anything. thats not even sloppy....that is shocking game design. from nintendo of all companies too.

the gun combat in uncharted games ruins it for me. they throw too many enemies at you, they soak up too much damage, the fights drag out and the combat is just not fun. its a very very sloppy gears of war. granted i have only played the first one, the demo of the second and uncharted on the vita (which is actually my fav as the combat ends faster at least). i would prefer the games if they focused more on exploration and less on combat because ND are just not very good at it. a but more POP and a bit less gears.

Wonky camera is huge, if I can't control the camera correctly I am done with it there. Controls as well. I need the controls to feel fluid as opposed to being like "wtf is this?" As much as I loved AC IV Black Flag, the free running controls were absolutely horrendous.

Terrible controls, story, balance and pacing issues keep me from playing a game from start to finish. Most of the time I'll go back to them and try to work it out sometime in the future, however.

I recommend Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne. The learning curve...nonexistent. A monkey could play those games.

Like others have said, shitty controls and camera movements can make a game really hard to enjoy...*cough*Killzone 2*cough*

Bugs and constant lag and freezing too...*cough*PS3 versions of Skyrim, New Vegas, and Fallout 3*cough*

Bugthesda better not **** up Fallout 4 on the PS4. Either finish the game and test it thoroughly or don't release it at all. You don't release a buggy game and take peoples' money. Dicks.

As for steep learning curve, I did manage to beat Dark Souls 2 a few times, so I guess that doesn't break it for me.

My list of what comes to mind as I type this:

  • Glitches
  • Stiff controls
  • Bad OST
  • Horrible voice acting without having an option to turn it off
  • Less gameplay, more walls of text or cut-scenes
  • Unnecessary grinding with poor rewards

  • Level design
  • poor atmosphere
  • patchy graphics where some parts look great and others look like crap
  • open areas or maps with nothing of depth or content to them
  • rinse and repeat missions or traversing the same area back n forth.

  • Unskippable cutscenes:- If there are too many cutscenes and its unskippable I will not be playing any further. Generally the moment I realise I can't skip a cutscene, I am immediately annoyed
  • Animation locking:- I hate games that lock you in animation. Its generally poor design. Games are typically responsive and animation locks destroys that repsonsiveness
  • Boring:- If the gameplay is not enjoyable or overly static, I am most likely going to jump ship. Thief comes to mind.
  • Borken Logic:- This applies mostly to adventure games. If the logic behind your puzzles is as meaningful as the toss of a die I am out.
  • Long loading times:- I don't have the patience for long loading times especially when the ratio is disturbingly close to gameplay time.
  • Story is too Animesque:- I generally stay away from RPGs with very strong anime roots in their storytelling.

Don't know what exactly. There are not many games that I felt as unplayable.

From the few that I had serious issues with, the one(s) that I can't really play are Assassins Creed games. Don't know why, and it's not because it is "cool to hate" but I've tried 1, 2 and Black Flag and I never got more than 2h of gameplay from them before giving up. Don't know why, but all feels forced in those games. Also, SSX, tried to play it and everything felt wrong on that game.

It pretty much has to be unplayable in the literal sense of the word for me to not at least finish the game. I pick and choose my games carefully, so it's not like I force myself to play through bad games. Though I occasionally do feel masochistic enough to play something I know won't be that good. But as far as things that irk me, I would go with clumsy controls and frustrating gameplay, which namely includes me dying a lot, whether or not I fault the game's mechanics.

Low frame rates, too much screen tearing or juttering. Also bad controls, bad writing(This one especially) and bad game mechanics. Also if I find the AI in game is literally there for me to play wack a mole with bullets on them then I usually stop playing. Call of duty is one of those wack a mole games I'm referring too.
