In the real world a clan was a group of people from the same bloodline or last name who were one big extended family with everyone within the clan being related to each other somehow through marriage etc. Usually they would own a portion of land under their clan name and defend it against rival clans who may want to invade.
In the gaming world a clan is the name given to a group of players who have joined together to form a group in a specific game. They usually come from all sorts of nationalities and ages and backgrounds and play online together wearing a clan tag in their game name. Eg -=(E.D)=- ShinRa was my old gamertag in Neverwinter Nights. Usually gaming clans will organise weekly or monthly matches against other clans for fun. However this is usually in FPS games like CSS, and usually these matches are mean't for fun and nothing else. Although sometimes clan matches are organised to settle a dispute between different groups because one clans member called the other clans member a "n00b" and said some stuff about their mum....
