I have played 3 in the series. The easiest of those to recommend is FF6. It is old but excellent.

@SilverBlade1805: Final Fantasy 4 is a great one to start with. Great story, great mechanics, and it's not too hard to figure out. Final Fantasy 6 is a bit more refined, however, so either of those two would work.

None of The Final Fantasy games are really complicated, not if you have played some RPG's before anyway.

I'd go with Final Fantasy IV, get the DS or PC version that have the updated visuals and voice acting,

Doesn't really matter as long as it's not X-2, XIII-2, or XIII: Lightning Returns. My personal recommendations are VI, VII, and X.

XIII does a really good job of introducing you to all the jargon that those games are saddled with. I rarely used magic in a Final Fantasy game until XIII because the older games make magic too costly to use, while XIII encourages experimentation and actually tells you what the spells and items do. The gameplay itself bares little resemblance to the rest of the series, but it's a ton of fun and might be a good introduction to fundamental aspects of the series.

After that, my favorite is VI. It holds up better than the rudimentary 3D visuals of VII-IX. X is great, too, and easily accessible in HD if you have a Vita or PS3.

I have no idea where my comment went!

Anyway, short version: get FF6.

Buy it on the Wii Virtual Console for the best version of the game (it was called FF III on the SNES). The recent Android port is ugly, and I've heard mixed things about the other ports.

FF4 is another great choice.
