With all the recent hate towards anita sarkeesian and video game sexism in general lately I have to ask, don’t they kinda have a point? When we have games like Dead or Alive where most of the screen is T and A, isn’t that just using sex to sell games? If that is all you are doing with your characters, then isn’t that just a type of sexism?

DOA is old. There isn't a whole lot of new blatant sexism in recent games. The majority of it looks pretty tame and gender neutral these days. So... if we reasonably assume game creators will continue the most current trends rather than 5 - 20 years ago, and we should, then i don't see how its even a valid concern to people who don't like T and A. So no, she doesn't have a very good point just on those grounds.

Plus she pisses gamers off because she started her video series by very strongly implying herself as a fellow gamer from its infancy back in the 90s. That tactic was used by her to obtain credibility and sympathy for her angle... turned out to be a complete lie.

Also, a lot of men don't particularly like being shamed for enjoying sexually attractive women. There is nothing wrong with it. All people including women objectify the opposite sex, its a part of life. Video games have just been traditionally a male dominated section so that is why its like that. Women are entitled to their opinion if they don't like but it still matters how that opinion is conveyed. Shaming men is not appropriate. At least not when i can wake up in the morning to a radio commercial that advertized Canning Tatum as a special guest on a daytime talk show to participate in a "strip quiz"... que the rabbid screams of horny women in the audience...

How is that sexism?

You're parroting feminist "logic".

Video games don't cause sexism in real life so they cannot be sexist.

Also, people don't disagree with Sarkeesian because she's a woman, they disagree with her because she's biased and OBJECTIVELY wrong in 99% of whatever comes out of mouth.

I find most sexism complaints in gaming to be like:

Someone throwing dirt into a pile to make a mole hill and then yelling as if that mole hill is a mountain.

In Dead or Alive's case... Yes.

And I hope that never changes... And if you saw a small bead of sweat roll down Tina's neck and over her ample bossom then you wouldn't want that to change either :)

I love sexism in my games, if you want to put a sexy girl on the screen shaking her ass while I play, I say bring it on.

I love that too, but that's not sexism.

That's ass shaking.

I am so getting tired of this topic that I'm starting to not care anymore. People just need to ignore sex in media (not just games, MEDIA) if they're so bothered by it.

There are books for women with naked men on the cover. Does it mean that books in general are sexist towards men?

Sex sells.

Lets face it games are all about fantasy and having sexy female characters just adds to it.

I have no problem with it.

No, she is not and she hasn't offered a single piece of evidence to back any of her claims.

She claims the community is sexist because that's what feminism taught her, that women leave their lives forever oppressed by men.

So she's just finding patterns to confirm her world view. She's biased and as far as I'm concerned, ripped people off their money and didn't deliver at all on her promises.

What you and her don't realize is that hundreds of millions of people play video games.

If a handful people go crazy and get abusive it has absolutely nothing to do with the industry as a whole.

There is literally nobody dismissing the issue of people getting abused.

Police get notified, people go in prison if they committed a crime.

When you say people are "dismissing the issue" i assume you mean gamers complaining about how its always in the news or just complaining about her in general. The message i'm getting from her supporters is that everyone should always verbally express sympathy to whatever she is dealing with weather they like her or not. This is absurd. It should be common sense that when a person doesnt like another, they wont feel particularly inclined to condemn any misfortune that befalls that individual. In addition to that, knee jerk reactions and comments on the internet dont necessarily reflect an individuals true feelings on the matter either.

I have someone at work that clearly despises me and i wouldnt expect to be able to approach her, discuss my personal life, then think she would express genuine concern or give a shit. That is a reality of adult life. Hell even as a young kid i learned real quick as a general rule of thumb that people dont care about your personal life. About a couple of months or so ago, when Anita was getting a new article every other day, there was a young man who was shot and killed by a sixteen year-old girl to steal his PS4. Of course there wasnt a peep about this on any game sites because he wasnt a feminist with a vagina so no one gives a shit.

So every person who plays video games is toxic because some people did things you didn't like but weren't illegal or harming anyone.

Perhaps you are toxic and the community is just fine.

Games are meant to be an exercise in fantasy. I have yet to feel guilty about the sexual content in them. Anita gets hate because she's misinformed and she has a political agenda most gamers disagree with. No reasonable person hates her because she's a woman criticizing games.

It's that some people think the video game community is supposed to be a safe space for their feelings and desires.

Nutshell: I agree with most things she says in her videos about sexism in video games, and I'd love it if developers generally avoided the worst tropes if they are looking for inclusiveness (games like DoA, for example, are games for men and that's fine IMHO). I dislike Sarkeesian as a person. I think gaming is trending toward inclusiveness with or without the help of social activists. Sexism is as much a part of gaming as it is a part of any other mass media.

If The Last of Us is an exemplar of properly avoiding sexist tropes in video games, I say bring on the feminism.

I think the problem is that people generally don't like getting painted with the same brush as a few nutjobs when they didn't do anything wrong. The majority of gamers are not sexist as far as I know, and I'm sure no one wants to be called a sexist asshole when they aren't one.

The "toxicity" of the gaming community is such a small portion of the actual gaming community. But because of people like Anita, and the news stories that media focus on, it's gotten to the point where gamers becoming embarrassed to call themselves gamers. I have a couple of friends who are now labeling all gamers as truly terrible people, and want me to stop calling myself a gamer as well. I'm a gamer, not a GamerGater.

Fair enough.... But what do you call the many people who refuse to acknowledge the few assholes that make up this industry is a huge problem... ?
